Best colored pencils to buy?
« on: May 06, 2004, 11:53:16 am »
On Weds. I went to a local costume manufacturer to talk about making a fursuit. Unfortuneately since I am not an artist I did not have any sketches to take with me to show what I wanted. I pretty much had to show pics of what other furs had done on the Internet. All in all, the conversation went fairly well but I'm still going to have to do my own sketches of what I want. What is a good brand of colored pencils to use on the market? I'm not looking for a big set but I do need a variety of different shades of blue. Thanks.

A very popular brand seems to be Prismacolor/Karismacolour (depending on where you live). Most specialised shops sell them as open stock, so you can buy a few shades of blue just to experiment with them. I have a few as well, they are a pleasure to work with.

prismas in open stock would be your best bet if you just need a few shades of blue.. however they smudge really easily because the are made to blend easy.. if you dont like that theres a brand with harder leds that they usually sell along side the prismas

How expensive are Prismacolors? Do the leads break easily?

If you find the Prismas too soft or smudge too easily, you can also try Pablo pencils by Caran d'Ache -- another brand I have seen recommended a lot. Harder lead, different binding medium (oil I think?). They are sold in open stock as well, probably for around the same price.

If you can't find any of these brands in a nearby store, you can't really go wrong as long as you get some "artist grade" pencils.

Thanks for your help Unicorn and Calico. I'll check out the nearest art supply store next week after payday. *hugs*
