Erasers?
« on: January 14, 2005, 01:13:50 pm »
I'm just curious, does anyone know what the difference is between all those erasers at the art stores? There's white ones, and clear ones, and black ones, and pink ones, and hard ones and soft ones. What's the difference? Are some erasers used for special things? Does it even matter?
I'm just curious.

I find some work better then others.  My favorite being the Sanford Magick Rubs.  Those will take anything off of anything, including one time I needed to take a thick layer of oil pastels off of one of my class projects.

The pink erasers are crap.  They leave pink marks on my paper.  I don't like the hard white ones either, it's like trying to erase with a brick.

The kneaded erasers are okay, they're not my favorite, but they can easily be cleaned.

My favorite is the soft white erase that comes in the eraser "stick" (click eraser?)
Although, if you don't let the ink dry thoroughly before erasing the pencil underneath it with one of those erasers, it tends to smear something bad.

The one I'm using currently is the Pentel Clic Eraser ZE22.

I like the soft white ones too. Magic Rubs are great. But the weird thing is this: I have two erasers by the same brand (Factis), and one type simply does not erase as well as the other type. I don't get it. Why would Factis make two similar products where one just isn't as good as the other? I figured maybe the crappy one was for erasing a different medium but I donno.

I use the vynil (white) erasers exclusively. The stick ones.

The clear (Staedtler calls them Purplast) are used for cleaning, as they are slightly less agressive than the white.

Blue and pink should be avoided at all cost ':dead:'

Other colors and consistencies are for specialized purposes - like those grey, plasticine-like things....great if the hardest pencil you use is 8B '<img'>

ditto here on white click erasers.  unfortunately, the log ate mine in a fit of PO because I didn't wake up in time.  completely destroyed my pencil case, too.

I've used every kind you can think of...though I've never heard of clear erasers till now.  as a Mechanical Draftsman, as originally trained, we used a mixture of eraser types, including an overall pounce powder to keep smudges down, Kneaded erasers, a kind of square block eraser...I think it was naturl rubber, vinyl erasers for the Velum when inking, a giant mechanical eraser you (get this) plugged in.  it was a drill that held eraser sticks...untill the white vinyls came cheap, we used the traditional pink.

Hokey's right....let your inking dry before you erase your pencil lines...no matter what your inking with.  I've even had it happen with Ball Point ink :P

I find white vynils the best, there fairly soft, yet the work like crazy. Best part it they're cheap, too.

Those pink one are CRAP, so are the white ones when they're on pencils. Usually the ones on pencils crumble.

it all depends on what kind of pencil you use
there are some greasy pecils that only can be erased correctly with the WHITE hard ones..
others uses the brown-cheesefeeling ones for dusty pencils..
and I definitively agree here.. the pink ones completely suck.. hard and leaves too much spots and stains..

The main ones I use are 'Mars Plastic' ones by Staedtler. Is that the same as the white vinyl ones you guys are talking about? It is fairly soft and white. Those seem to work best for most things for me.

Kneaded erasers are also not bad, but I find them better for just lightening up an area then actually erasing. Of course they are also fun to just play with. Squishy. '<img'>

If you want a really good eraser get a Staedtler Mars Plastic eraser.  They're the white eraser in the little blue box.  Best eraser I've used.   The same one Vararam mentioned.

For erasers the White plastic ones are the best for erasing (I cant for the life of me remember what they're called..*pulls one out of her pocket*...oh..heheh...Staedtler *sweatdrop*) They're inexpensive, erase cleanly and last for a while. plus you can get a three pack at walmart for two bucks. ~EoN

I'll have to go with Ulario here, the Magic Rubs are the best. Most basic pink erasers tend to smudge more than they clean up.

I love the Staedtler Mars Plastic eraser.  It's very clean.
Also, Staedtler makes a stick-type Mars Plastic eraser that you hold like a pencil.

Kneaded erasers, the kind you can shape, are mainly for lifting out pigments and graphite from the paper.  It's very useful, and easily cleaned.

The pink erasers are okay for school, but mess up paper pretty bad if you're drawing.

"Art Gum" erasers erase well, but leave TONS of debris.
