Drawing a deer character.
« on: April 20, 2005, 05:06:58 pm »
The other day I got a request to draw a deer. (toon style is ok)
I really don't have very much experience with the four legs on the ground type characters. So I would appriciate any tips that would help me with the project.

I have looked at some Bambi drawings. They are cute. But I don't want to just copy that style.

Thanks in advance.

As odd/horrible as it may sound some of the best referance can be found via taxidermy catalogs. If you are good at fur using pics in theii catalogs of the forms is good for getting anatomy and such.
There are online ones as well as book ones that can be ordered.

I'd also suggest making a few sketches from photos. I usually begin a sketch by drawing the skeleton, so it might be helpful to study that as well.

(I can probably give more specific advice if you post a drawing. '<img'> )

Thanks for the info. That gives me a good point of resource.
I don't  plan trying to a realistic work. Mainly just work up a cartoon style that is on the cute side, but generally acurate in shape.
I will post a sketch in a few days.
