there's plenty of 'right way' tutorials out there, however, since I use very little angualr variety...

try using the construction techniques that you normally would for a regular figure.  construction ovals and pose skeletons have added a bit of improvement to my own techs, and I've applied this to getting muzzle shapes right.  give me some time, and I'll put up a mini sketch for it.

I've made some quick sketches of the method I use (and everyone else, with some variation). I don't actually sketch like this, but I have made it more elaborate so you have an idea of what's going on in my head.

Start with a sphere. The two circles that I've drawn across the sphere are the lines you use to place eyes, ears, and other features at the same height and at the same distance from the middle of the face. At this point you determine in what direction your character will be facing (the arrows), and at what angle the head will be drawn.

For muzzles, I use something between a box and a pyramid. (A frustum, for all you math geeks). Here you decide how long and how broad it will be. Look at your drawing in a mirror, you'll notice if you have misplaced the muzzle. You can now draw a face on top of this. Of course you must round off all the sharp angles to make it look more natural.

Getting a pick with a character looking up is pretty hard. I did it on accident once. Maybe I can get a pic to show you guys. May take a while.

You can use the same method for drawing a fur looking straight at the camera. I've drawn the same ball-and-box model on top of an existing pic of mine to illustrate this:

Drawing a character looking up is much harder, but the basics are still the same. Note that the line that is used for placing the eyes is much higher because of the tilt, so the eyes are also closer to the top of the head. The nose raises even more:
