Folded wings on six-limbed anthros
« on: July 02, 2008, 01:19:25 am »
Hellos. I am pondering the design of a fursona based on a tree swallow (Photo Link). And I was thinking of a conventional anthro, with wings on its back, which would be great for if I wanted to fly. However, there are some technical difficulties. Having wings on your back would be inconvenient, if you wanted to sit down in a chair or wear a backpack. But besides that, every time somebody draws your portrait you have to unfurl your wings, and hold that pose for six hours. How does anyone do it without their muscles cramping up? The mind boggles. o.O

Admittedly, unfurled wings look nice and dramatic. But I can't imagine wanting to walk around like that all the time. Besides it being hard on the wings and the upper chest, you'd have trouble fitting through doors and such. And you'd keep bumping into other people every time you turned around to see what someone was saying.

I'd really like to see what a winged char looks like under "normal" conditions, at rest or just hanging out, especially sitting down. But all the pics I can find have the chars standing upright with wings unfurled, like they're posing for the artist. Are there any (family-friendly!) reference pics that don't depict winged furs that way? Or are there simply logistical reasons why this wouldn't work, the same kind of reasons that would make it impractical in real life? If anyone has a winged fursuit, that might be interesting to see too, since they'd have to have worked it out already.

Anyone?

when In Gryphon form, I keep them "heart folded".  unfortunatly, the best refrence site available quickly, sans adult material without a subscription, is down because of a physically bad server (furaffinity).

I would suggest looking for any artist that draws some sort of gryphon/griffin.  there is a certian unicorn furson on here that has great wing refrence material.

it's very hard to find a "static" pose artist, now, tho.

I commonly keep them folded this way.

Avian, checking in.
Now, I may not be the best birdie to ask because I have drawn myself with "hybrid" wing-arms. Arms that kind of resemble wings more than your average non-avian furry's arms.
One (2005) Image of mine that actually involves a tree swallow:

Note: Some of the characters seen in my drawings belong to other people and the pics were done as trades.

Some avians I have drawn with wing-arms:

Arms with the wing feathers growing out of them. Some images I have seen have avians whose arms are full wings with archaeopterix-like claws for a hand coming out at the wrist joint.
Or like seen in this (stylized) pic of mine:

Some avian and non-avian winged creatures I have drawn with back-wings and arms:

In this pic, the wings are half-furled. When completely folded, they would bend at the "elbow" joint in the middle and lay flat on the back as seen in Sniffs's pic.

This one's from early 2005, so it's not my best ever, but it does show folded wings. Albeit on a quadrupedal character.

More folded wings, this time on a taur character.

Folded wings on a bipedal character.

I hope this helps!
Fruitcake is a legitimate gender in my book.

Wow, lots of references! HockeyRaven, I think I've seen that tree swallow pic of yours; it's one of only two anthro tree swallows on the entire 'net as far as I am aware. ^.^;

Many thanks to everyone who's responded!
