Graphics Tablet?
« on: November 18, 2007, 01:10:25 pm »
Well, with Christmas coming up, I've been looking to get a graphics tablet, as I'm thinking about starting a web comic. However, I've came to a rock in the road...I've heard that a few people have had problems with their tablets, or they haven't been good enough quality, etc. etc.

So, I was just wondering...what would be the best graphics table to get? And if there's no specific one, is there any few that're good, but not too expensive?

Thanks. :3

Unfortunately, decent Graphics tablets that aren't going to give you problems are difficult to get inexpensively. Wacom (The industry standard) is probably the best way to go.

When I got mine, I picked up the intuous3 4x5 for around $150. I decided I'd rather go for the quality of Wacom despite the cost; I didn't want to purchase an inexpensive one that didn't work and be stuck with it, or have to buy another...

Plus, as far as I know, the Wacom's all come with software bundles. Mine came with Adobe Photoshop Elements 4, Corel Painter Essentials 3, nik Color Effects Pro 2 IE, and the Wacom Brushes 2- all of which comes out to be over $200 on it's own I think.

I do know that they have less expensive models; I believe one for around $100. and you can buy them refurbished for less. If you really can't afford that, my advice is to go and search for 'graphics tablets' on amazon and read the buyer reviews. I did see several that I considered buying back when I was looking.

I've also been thinking about getting a new one, the one I've got isn't pressure sensitive and it's magnetic, so th moment you put the pen near it the curser jumps around. Is there any kind of labeling that would stop me getting another one like it?

It's a wacom, but I don't like it.

O.o I didn't know that Wacom made non-pressure sensitive Tablets.

All tablets (As far as I'm aware) will jump when you set your pen to them. On mine at least, any point on the tablet's drawing area corresponds to a point to the moniter- if you randomly set you pen down in the corner of the drawing space, your cursor will jump to the corner of the screen.

Anyhoo- it should say on the box whether it's pressure sensitive or not-Pressure sensitivity is a GOOD thing!

Well, I'm definitely getting a Wacom tablet, but I was wondering...which one of these two?

Smaller, yet considerably cheaper?: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wacom-B....&sr=8-7

Larger, but more expensive?: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wacom-B....&sr=8-6

Thanks to everyone who's already helped.

uninstall it and it will still work but won't have all the pressure sensitivity crap going on.
That's what I did with my Wacom.

As for the original poster.  I'd look for a Graphire but that's me being bias with my Graphire 3 I got refurbished shortly after they came out back on Christmas in like 2004 and havn't had issues with except when I broke the mouse(which I got a replacement for).
The ones your looking at I know nothing about. I'd read up on them and see if they're worth the money.
Also check local computer stores and see if you can buy a refurbished one. Those are sold pretty cheap.

I have a trust tablet, works well just by plugging it in as the driver made it do strange things. I uninstalled the driver it works fine.

It all depends on how serious an artist you are and how your bank backs that up. xP I plan on replacing my own with the Wacom DTZ-2100. Its hella expensive, around $2,800..but what do you expect, tis a 21" lcd pressure sensative touch screen. *sqee*:"3

I was working with Tablets in high school WAY back in 90.  we used both a pen tablet and a puck tablet on our rare color monitors (admin was still doing their work on green and amber 12 inchers!  ).  My ex gave me a tablet, but, since the company went out of business 3 years after we got our first computer [it was the same manufacturer as our early digital camera], there's no help, support, or anything else, and it promptly makes the comp soft reset the minute the pen is moved.

does anyone have a buying solution that does NOT involve having to purchase online?  my credit is bad enough without an Identity theif nailing me to the wall over a 200 dollar purchase '<img'>

Heya, Kig, I actually just got the smaller, cheaper Wacom you linked earlier and it works awesomely. If you draw more with your arm than your wrist, go bigger. But my screen is small and I like having all of the windows open around the canvas, so the size is pretty perfect.

I wish you luck on your selection!

Thanks for all the replies. everyone. '<img'>

And Kaid, thanks, too. I've decided I'll do for the smaller version, as that much extra cost wouldn't be worth what I'm wanting to do. If, later, I decide I need a bigger one, I'll invest in that.

Thanks again, everyone. '<img'>
