Well i usually do a very quick sketch, just quick lines with circles. Always start with the head ( huge ballon) and then reduce for the desired size, then i start drawing blocks or circles to build the body.
Cartoonist faces are more easily than realistic, because they lack of detail .
cartoonist can be simply or complex, like some very simply eyes nose and mouth with a classic oval shape head.

im afraid i cant draw myself comics because imused to draw a body in a entire page size ( not used to draw my chars in small spaces )
But i guess you can ask Jeff Kun ( closet con's creator ) or Seraph ( another comic creator )

Some times I just sketch out what is in my head but if I am having troubles with a particular character or stance, then I will do the stick figure thing to get the figure where I want it and then fill around it.

I have an erased piece I did a couple years ago with stick figures. It is a group of horses

running. I still have that hanging on our wall. Plus the other 5 pics I did like this for the first time.

I'm not a great drawer or anything but I normally start with the eyes cus if you mess them up the whole thing just doesn't look right, after that I sketch in the head and work my way down adding detail as I go.  Hope it helps '<img'>

If the pose and posture of the character in question is what truly matters about the work, then by all means, start with a stick figure, or what is called a "gesture sketch" by some. It'll help you lay out the proportions of the character so that you're not making huge mistakes down the road after having already invested time and work into the drawing that may end up needing to get entirely redone.

I do occasionally draw stick skeletons, but it doesn't work too well for me.  I'm better with construction ovals.

Nice pic, Beyond! Yes, the eyes are the best part as WS has told me "The eyes make the picture." So I have been working hard on creating nice eyes.

Benjamin can give you some suggestions on how to resize for here. I think he has some where the size to be used.

STick figures and shape additions are definitely the way to start.   ONce it clicks in your head how itworks, you won't ever give it up.  I was trained in school that way..  it was very difficult to switch from my old ways of drawing.
Practice drawing stick/shape drawings off of things that are true to life.  A live model...animal..human...plant..or purrhaps a photo.  It's even great to try reproducing cartoon drawings in the same manner.   Also, what i like to do is make big honkin' pages of nothing but...say..hooves. If I feel like my hoof-drawing skills are crappy, that's what I'll do.
That's how I learned to draw birds,actually..
I created a bird character for use in a character design class, justbecause I knew I sucked at birds, and I knew I'd haveto be drawing one for 50,000 times a day.  needless to say, my beek drawing improved greatly.

..but yeah..  anyway..I'm at work and I forgot what else I was gonna say.

hehe,type you later.
NYA!  =^_^=

Wonderful coloring job, Beyond! The shading looks great and as you progress with your work you will get better and better and oh did I say better?  '<img'>

Your sketch of your "self portrait" is great! Are you planning on coloring it?

Not really no, I feel that if I don't do it perfectly it'll mess it up, but what the Hell I'll give it go!

You could do like I do, I keep the original sketch and resketch it for coloring, but that is soooooo time consuming I beginning to rethink that idea. (giggles)

Make a light render of it in your photo program and print it out. Make it real light so that you can just barely see the lines and then color it. All the print will be hidden and that way you don't mess up your original piece which looks great the way it is!

As for the image sizes... If you're using Photoshop (or most any image editor out there) you can set the image size to whatever you need. I'd recommend maybe 500 or 600 pixels width for most stuff to be posted here, so it doesn't go off the right side of the screen for people that have lower (800x600) resolution monitors.

The drawings look good. I like the pencil sketch, self-portrait one. With a bit more work and attention to detail, you can probably work in some more of the range of shades in the composition. It takes a fair bit of work to perfect something like that, so your drawing there comes off more on the level of a "quick sketch" though it's still coming along good. I've done drawings (well-detailed) where I've spent 30 or so hours of working on it in order to get the effect I wanted. It paid off in the end, at least. '<img'>
Keep at it. '<img'>

Well here's the coloured version. Your advice was really good Kada! I would have spent longer on it this one as well but I don't have the time at the moment what with collage and all, but I've still got the original so when I get the time I'll go back and really finish it off (Oh by the way the sketch took about 40 minutes so it was a QUICK sketch!
