Paws
« on: July 07, 2008, 02:26:10 am »
I started drawing paws to attempt to get better at them.  to do this I just got a sheet of paper and kept drawing.  trying to fix mistakes i made the last time and get better each time I did a new paw.  this is what I came up with.

\

the one on the very bottom right was my favorite, and the second to the last one I did.  I would love Critique on this,  and any other comments...  thanks!

Very nice! Hands and feet (and therefore, paws), are probably the most difficult thing to draw. It just takes practice, so you are definitely on the right track with focusing on them. :) I had to do that back in high school, and I probably need to do it again, since it has been a while since I sat down and focused on that part of the anatomy.

Agreed! :)

One of my teachers in art school told me "If you can draw hands, you can practically draw anything 'cuz those suckers are complex!"

Hands are truly intricate with all of the joints and articulation and just plain weirdness of such extremities.  :D  One thing that I do for hand/paw practice is to look at pictures of both hands and paws.  With the hands, I try to see what makes them animal-like, and with the paws I try to see what makes them human-like.  From there I draw the comparisons from whatever source I'm studying (pictures, hands of family/friends, my own) and put them into different positions from different angles.

As you said, you kept drawing when you started.  That is a great step in itself, for many people just stop if a drawing isn't turning out the way they want it.  As for critiques, you're off to a good start.  You seem to know where you're going with the positions and structures of the hand.  My suggestion is to try and "build" a hand--that is, make it from shapes.  Everything around us is made up of shapes, and even the most complex of objects can be broken down into simple shapes.  The palm can be a basic square, circle, or rectangle, while the fingers can be tubes or cylinders (think of the sketch sections in cartoon "how to draw" books).

Breaking things down gives you a sense of weight and placement while helping to figure out how things work, so to say.  It's a technique that, once learned, becomes a part of your skills arsenal.  Give it a try, and good luck!
