PS is overated!
« on: May 26, 2004, 03:14:44 pm »
Is it just me, or is PS, PSP, and etc all getting way too much hype?

PS isn't a "magic tool". Some people I know seem to think that if only they could afford photoshop, they'd make some kickbutt stuff.

Wrong!!! I keep telling them that it takes a lot of skill, but nay.

I myself prefer simple programs. I used PS once and thought, "Ok, so I can blur. Whoop." That's the one main diffrence I saw between it and paint. I use MSPaint for nearly everything, and I get slammed for it a lot. Which I don't understand, really.

I know some people like useing online "simple" programs similar to paint, and it comes out quite nice.

Why's PS on a pedastal?

Who's with me!

PS as much more potential but you need to know how to use it, remember that you cant use layers in paint :P
paint as like 10 tools, compared to the nearly 60 of photoshop, plus filters and layering options.
the diference is GREAT but it wont work if you dont know how to use it :P

also I didnt buy photoshop '<img'>

why buy it if im not doing for ubber realistic comercial things?

Is a jigsaw a useless tool to have in your shed?
Sure as hell is. Maybe you decide to make jigsaw puzzles..but those get old fast.  Purrhaps after a long time of cutting those dang puzzles, you discover...'hey I can carve foam with this..' or discover how to make those nifty yard standees that are always found in the country.  But there's other things to do with it too.

Photoshop is like a jigsaw...expensive, but only useful for a few things.  Sure you can always find 50 other things to do with it, but those 50 other things don't matter unless you've got the fundamentals down first.

On the other paw, Photoshop is like candy sprinkles... it can make a nice topping on your dessert, but after a while, your teeth will go bad, and you'll need to switch to sugar-free.

. . . .

Actually, I forget the point I was gonna make.  I really like Illustrator these days.

I agree with Cesarin. PS has a lot of potential once you learn how to operate it. You can make some pretty kickass stuff with it. Just takes some time.

They're all simply different art tools. Think of PS as painting with a paintbrush on canvas, and MSPaint as dipping your thumb in a bucket of paint and drawing with that.

That's not to say you can't make nice pieces of artwork with your thumb, but it doesn't allow as many options, and it's *probably* not considered as professional.

Def-inately!  PS is all I use anymore, because digital media creates beautiful rich textures and smoothness that cannot be created with any other media.  I was first introduced to Digital Media being used in comic books by Ascension, my all time favorite grapic novel next to the crow.  It's my favorite not because of the story, but because of the absolutely stunning art and coloring.  David Finch, the creator is a friggin' artistic genius.

No, photoshop is not the only tool around, nor is it the best (in fact, no medium is the best), but it is the one that I prefer for my art.  I wouldn't be able to create the soft shading that I'm known for and that I love dearly.

I prefer PS over most other programs because it tends to be a bit more refined and easier to use then some of the other programs I've tried.

But yeah, back on the subjects.  It just takes the time and patience to learn how to use it.  Hell, I'm still learning.  Just started getting into using channels.  '<img'>

One thing about Photoshop that bothers me, though..
about 75% of the time, it's really obvious when someone uses it.  I have the same feelings about music programs, too.

I'm not saying there's anything WRONG with PS.

Just that it's overrated. As I said, people treat it like a magic wand, a fix for their art problems.

Raef, I totally ain't saying you're wrong.
To me, nothing beats drawing a line art on a large bristol board with ink, and finishing the job with some sort of paint or ink product.  When I wanna do something really fast, I'll go to Photoshop.  Or even faster, I'll draw the whole thing in Illustrator and call it a day.   But yeah..  a few thing kept me from swinging on Photoshop's nuts.  The magic wore off on me some time ago.

Another problem I have with PS is that EVERYBODY USES IT!

I mean, I see a photoshopped picture now and I'm like, "Oh, woo, that's pretty cool..." whereas I used to be, "OH MOTHER-SWEET!!! That is AWESOME!" etc. But it jsut doesn't surprise me or astound me anymore. It's all good art, I really like them, but it doesn't wow me like it used to. It's sort of like having a good song being overplayed. It gets drab-and sometimes annoying-after a while.

I'm not saying your wrong either.

Whether PS is overrated or not is all personal opinion.  I personally don't think it is... but yes, there are some people who believe it is a magick wand.  However, those could very well be people who want to take the easy way out without exploring all of the different possibilities.

I have done so, and have found that PS is the best for what I do.

':p' i have ps7, illuststrator8, and draw11. maybe something easle and a wacom tablet. had these for a while now...thought these would be easy to use. but they are complicated as hell, only thing i know to do in ps is resize my pic without losing quality. just learned that 2 maybe 2 weeks ago.   and i cant wait till i learn how to use these things to really juice up my work.
but still, i dont think anything can beat real paint, color pencils and what not. i think these are more interesting and original than any thing a computer could cook up.

I agree on the last line. The only reason I prefer computer meduims? Straight lines and permanant erasures. My lines are never straight or curved how I like and I end up erasing a BILLION times over, creating nice smudges all over said area.

Photoshop is overrated in some ways, as is comupter art in general. No computer program can replace the creativity and artistic skills needed. (I've seen a lot of badly drawn computer art.)

Although, in the right hands (or paws), photoshop is very powerful. I know I can do coloring a lot better in photoshop then with traditional media, but that's probably largely because I haven't used traditional media as much. For actual drawing though, I prefer the good ol' pencil and paper.

Photoshop isn't overrated. It's an enormously powerful and open-ended graphics program that kicks the holy living **** out of any other colored-pixel-manipulator out there and is worth every cent of its purchase price.

BUT!

If you don't know how to use it, it's going to do absolutely zero for you. It takes time, skill, and patience to achieve anything with it.

thats SO not true, some uses Paint shop pro, others use painters, the variety is huge, but like some pro artist said to me once.
there are parts that cannot be done by only PS itself, and needs others tool, wich painter has.

Some artists that does kickass stuff in digital media doesnt use only photoshop im afraid.

Disagree with it.
Paint shop pro is muuuch cheaper and as almost every tool you need , a bit less tools than photoshop, yet still powerful.

PS is like the "Intel" of the market ( Xeons  or itanium 2 )
vs
PSP ( shop pro ) wich is like
AMD's 64 cpus

but in this war there are more programs..
like painter... corel's products too...

Also, a Photoshop class wouldn't hurt either.  I learned a lot from those types of classes.  Such as why Illustrator doesn't suck as much as I thought it did, and why I hate Macs.... sure they're good for graphics goodness, but the machines themselves piss me off in so many ways...

:rolls eyes at everybody yapping about paintshop:

I'ts a little hard to use a graphics program like that without a tablet. there's too many complications when one only has a mouse.  however, i can't use M$ Paint very well either.  as I trained on a tablet FIRST instead of a mouse (and I have Photographic proof to back it up), and in HIGH SCHOOL no less, I have trouble maneuvering a mouse...as I never even SAW one till I got out of high school.  up untill that point, almost no program was associated with windows, yet, and I had to type in my directions for AutoCAD manually, instead of pulling down a menu.
so, technically, the first graphics program I started on was AutoCAD 10.0...and on monochrome green monitors, no less!  I didn't see a color monitor till COLLEGE...consider yourselves lucky you started with such advanced programs

Personally, i use idraw and psp beta 5, as all i do is the occasional chipset manip for my rpg, and i find these hard to use as i am not good at pixel art. WHat I will say, from having used PS for simple stuff (so my poinion isnt that important anyways) is that PS is the most versatile 2dimaging program ive ever used,it helped me turn a crappy presentation into a relativley professional peice of work, because i picked up a few of the basics and used the filters to make my grpahics seem a lot more complex, i do not have ps anymore as i dont really need it.
This is just my opinion on it which i am entitled to have, its a capable tool even if you just pick u[p the basics and can be turned to any number of taksks... anyway...Ive had my say... so im gonna go stand in a corner and babble about something else...

Classes are nice to take, but not a necessity.

When it comes to photoshop, I'm 100% self taught.  I like to learn how to do art on my own, so I never felt the need to take a class.
