What Do You Like in a Background
« on: September 28, 2010, 01:12:40 am »
I'm usually terrible with backgrounds and it's really only been recently that I've started digitally adding something, even if it's a solid color as a bit of a space-filler in the background. With a the last 2 finished digital pieces I've completed, I used some of my sister's photography.

Traditionally, I suck at them so I don't bother, and I usually end up with bit of scrapbooking paper for conbadge backgrounds.

What I'm looking for though is what people prefer in a background in either their own art or things they have commissioned. :/
Signature on hiatus until it gets its act together.

I usually don't do backgrounds...my badges are slightly larger than most, and I just cut around the character to form a uniquely shaped badge.  For most of my other art, I just add a few quick scribble marks with my beige markers, since it's the character/costume I want my viewers to focus on, not the background.

But sometimes, I do splurge and do a full background, but it's usually monochromatic or part of the foreground anyway (:

Cheers,

I commissioned a friend of mine to do a Fursona picture of one of my alternate fursonas who is a bartender, in the back ground it shows a very fuzzy image of what you'd expect the back of a bar to look like. She didn't go in depth of what the bottles were, only enough detail to show you that there were bottles. If anyone want I can post the image as my friend would love the attention so she can get more commissions. So my advice to you RaggedyHatter is this, if you suck at backgrounds only hint at what is there. Just rough it out and let the viewer add in any detail that comes into their own mind.

I like natural backgrounds like forests and mountains, but if the background is to be simple I like gradient backgrounds rather than just one solid flat colour (to me it looks a bit odd)

I usually do natural environments as backgrounds (I'm normally drawing pokémon). I like forest, ocean/beach, mountains, fields, etc. I also love using lighting: sun rays, lens flares, etc. and weather effects like fog and rain.

Personally, I go with something that matches the action/setting. Like mountains if the character is hiking, or a library if the character is studying. Now, if it is just a simple character drawing, then I'll just put down a plain color barkground.
I am a Canis Lupus Vulpes Americanus Califius, Cali Folf for short..

I usually add a background of some kind, even if it's just a gradient. But that's because I generally don't draw "characters", I draw "scenes. And the characters are part of the scene. The character is usually the focus, but still the work is a whole. It's not just about the character.

In pictures that are just the character, I generally prefer if there is some kind of background even if it's just a gradient. But really, the most important thing is that it looks good. It also depends on what it's for. For example, if this is an avatar pic, then it IS about the character, and it's also generally going to be fairly small. In those kind of cases, a background can make things seem cluttered. But it all depends on the image.

Sometimes no background makes a cool background. There's also some who take a real life photo and modify it a bit to use as background, which looks well too.
But my favorite background will always be a rave party <3

My ideal background has lots and lots of pretty rainbow colors, as can be seen from a perusal of my FA submissions and favorites.

Backgrounds are good practice if your learning to draw.. Composition and perspectives
for example..

It depends on the drawing or the person wanting me to draw a picture....  If I have the
time and feel its needed, then I will do one..   Otherwise it's a solid color or white with a
shadow to give the character something to stand on. :orbunny:
