For digital stuff I use Photoshop and Illustrator.

I hand draw then scan in in to my computer and use GIMP to color. I'm starting to use photoshop more and I really want to use that.

JASC Paint Shop Pro (since HS), then Photoshop, and sometimes Illustrator.

Photoshop.

I've tried Gimp and didn't care for it. But then, I'm used to Photoshop.  Incidentally, if you are interested in ever doing digital art professionally, it'd be a good idea to learn Photoshop and/or Illustrator because that's the standard used in most industries that use digital art.

Paint.net isn't bad if you can't get Photoshop, but it seems to lack a lot of the functionality. (for example, it's not nearly as easy to work with semi-transparency.

Paint.net has an epic amount of plugins. I mostly use it for sprites and website stuff.

Gimp is more for normal art.

Max I do for actually rendering the sprites in the first place (for transcendence's sprites at the very least) - also for making models for games that use models. G or 3DS; I'm familiar with both.
I've also had limited experience with other 3d modeling programs

Photoshop for "painterly" stuff and image editing; Illustrator for logos and graphics that require a perfectly clean look (I often find vector too clean); InDesign and Quark XPress for layout (which we used to do with paste-up) and typesetting; Flash for animation (of course) and sometimes for vector art when I want it to look hand-drawn (Flash simulates pen and brush work better than Illustrator).

I cannot recommend Paint Tool Sai enough. It's an amazing program.

Also, Photoshop. I use CS4.

I have pretty much stopped using JASC for drawing. Use Photoshop almost exclusively now. I can use Illustrator as well, but I like my scribbles in PS more. I use CS4 Photoshop and Illustrator.

On a side note: I gave (and am still trying) SAI a try as well. It's completely incompatible with my tablet. The tablet works great until SAI finishes loading then it completely stops working until SAI is closed. Heh.. oh well. Other than that its a nice lite drawing program. If it works with your hardware then I'm sure its a good cheap alternative to PS though I could not locate an actual price on the website or in the program.. I like it MUCH more than GIMP though.

Sadly I am stuck with JASC Paint Shop Pro 8 and it is hard to do realism in it so I only colour under my sketches or draw cartoons in there.
I have however found a free 3d program, it's limited but haven't tried it because of that reason but someone here might be interested. http://www.wings3d.com/

I typically use Photoshop CS2 for most of my drawings, tried the newer versions but couldn't get as comfortable as I am in CS2.

Been trying out Sai recently, so far liking what I see. I'll probably purchase it sometime in the future.

I mainly use Photoshop CS3 and Painter X.
Both are a bit outdated, but don't fix what isn't broken, eh?
They both have everything I need.
I usually use Photoshop for texturing, inking, adjusting and other things, and Painter for coloring and blending.
Photoshop isn't really good at blending, since all it has really is the smudge tool for that, but I hear that the new Photoshop CS5 has a blend tool that works like Painters blend tool. I might get the trial to see how that works, but I doubt it'll be up to par with all the blending options that Painter has.

Really? If it does have a blending tool then I'm definitely trying it out, I always did think the smudge tool in Photoshop was kinda subpar for blending.
Kinda makes sense though, Photoshop really was more designed for photos than drawing.

InColdBlood: "Photoshop isn't really good at blending, since all it has really is the smudge tool for that..."

You just have to get creative with it. I generally keep areas of color isolated on separate transparent layers so I can click "preserve transparency" and apply any tool or filter I want without affecting the edges. Likewise, you can create masks (similar to cutting frisket when airbrushing) and save them as alpha channels, then use them to select what you want to modify.

Photoshop is deep. There's no end to what you can do with it, even in Photoshop 5. The extra gadgets added since are mostly redundant. They're easier for novice users, but you've been able to do just about anything you can think of with it since Photoshop 3.

Well, I should rephrase that, Photoshop isn't really good at blending in a painterly way.
I know how to work masks and all that jazz, but it doesn't really have anything that can duplicate a painterly way of coloring like Painter does.
Sure, you could make a brush to imitate bristles like a paintbrush and set for the opacity to be determined by pen pressure, but it still won't pick up other colors when you paint over them like a real paintbrush would.
Though, it seems like the new Photoshop seems to be improving on that.

Not that there's any blending in it, InColdBlood, but if your avatar is your work, you obviously know what you're doing.

MS paint. It's hard to work with the more advanced features and a lot of things are missing entirely, but my firewall hates all the other programs I try to install.
