Worried about furry cons
« on: October 06, 2011, 12:44:31 pm »
I have only been to 1 convention when I was 10, the canine convention and dog show "Crufts" (I was very lucky to get in, it is the worlds most popular dog convention!), but I am worried if the adult furries as well as teen furries will be as welcoming as they were to me at Crufts, even though I am 13. I have been frequently scared about the "Yiff at conventions" stories, and I am worried. Are they fiction or true? Plus, I don't know where my nearest con is.

If you look at the pinned topics at the top of the Convention forum, there's some good links and other resources that might help you out, including this one:

I've only been to two different furry conventions -- Further Confusion in Northern CA and Rainfurrest in Seattle -- but, I found them both friendly enough places that the second time I went to Rainfurrest I brought my 4-year-old daughter and my mother (to watch my daughter) with me.  And they both had a great time.  Also, I noticed on the schedule that there was actually a two-hour time slot set aside specifically for "Youth in Furry Fandom."  Here's its description:

"Youth in Furry Fandom. This panel is for the discussion of younger furs ages 13-19. What are the challenges? This is hosted by the youth for the youth and the topics will include: How did we get into the fandom? What are we here (at Rainfurrest) for? What do we contribute to the fandom? Furryness/school, y/n if they should cross and what are the effects/consequences of doing so? Parents, are they supportive, clueless, indifferent or worse?"  (https://www.rainfurrest.org/programming/matrix.php?mode=panel&ID=351)

I didn't go to that panel, so I don't know what it was like, but it's presence on the schedule suggests to me that there must have been a fair number of 13- to 19-year-olds at the con.

most of the yiff at cons happens behind closed doors from ym experiences. You're not going to get dragged into anything, and generally if you feel uncomfortable about someone there is always a friendly, helpful staff member somewhere in the vicinity that you can ask for help. If nothing else there is also con ops. That's in the unlikely even that something -does- happen. 13-con vet here :P

I've been to MFM for many years and it's quite safe, but then it's also a very small con so everyone knows everyone there pretty much. The most dangerous thing there, that I've experienced is getting dragged into a game of Werewolf till 2... 3... 5(!) in the morning. Some people enjoy that game way too much for their own health.  :D

With only one con to reference, (RMFC) I did not see anything I did not want to see. If anything, I was impressed by everyone behaving so well. 8)

I have been to countless business conventions/trade shows. I have seen all sorts of bad behavior, some of it out in the open, or actually encouraged by the staff, other vendors. :o
Like any thing else in life, if one looks for trouble, they will find it. :P
