What is your favorite home cooked meal? I'm talking about the type of meal that you really loved time after time that your mother, grandmother, aunt, etc. would make occasionally during holidays, special gatherings, or just an occasional dinner every once in a while. It's kinda like when you hear someone say: "Mom, I've always loved your tuna casserole (Or other dish) that you used to make years ago. That sure brings back memories."

For me, I've always liked it when my mother or grandmother made homemade chili, meatloaf, scalloped potatos, beef stew, and also macaroni & cheese. YUM!  '<img'>

My mother used to make the worlds best Irish Boiled Dinner on my birthday (Boiled potatoes, Cabbage, Carrots, and Boiled Corned Beef) What can I say? It's an Irish/English family. (It didn't help that my birthday is on St. Patricks day)

She only made this once a year, and it was always a family gathering when she did. Best stuff in the world, I think. Really kind of sad, since this is going to be the first time I won't be able to join the family since I'm now a good 800 miles away from them. <sigh>

My favorite meal would have to be either the lasagna my dad makes on the rare occasions that he cooks, or when my mom makes meatloaf & fried potatoes.

I can't properly answer this question right now... because I'm so hungry that everything sounds really, really good.

But I would have to say turkey tetrazzini. We get it once a year, after thankgiving, made with the turkey leftovers. Mmm... so good..

Fried wild mushrooms and fried tomatoes with fried/crockpot cooked squirrel, fried wild turkey, with mashed potatoes mixed with creamed corn. With a few leaks of green onion on the side. MMMMM..

Also..  fried nearly whole bluegill or kentucky bass fish with fried wild mushrooms, and kentucky grown fresh garden green beans (not the canned stuff), and fried fish egg sacks (not caviar, but the egg sacks from bluegill or bass, pull them out, batter, and fry, very tasty).  '<img'>

Favorite home cooked meal? hard to say for me, but it is not just my mother that cooks in this family so I'd say anything that we can both make fills the bill for my favorite.

My father was the cook in the house. His cooking style was influence by his life in Rural Virginia. Our family has been on the land since my ancestors were slaves.
MY father can cook up a mean pot of greens or beans. The ham bone or turkey carcass always got turn into soup. When he would do one of his cooking project he would turn on some Motown and do his "cooking dance" while stirring the pot.

He passes away in 2002.

MMM My grannys tomatoes n rice and Potatoes in thickening.

I can still have the tomatoe dish a little alteration(she uses bacon, I sub extra salt).

Ive not tried to make the potatoe dish yet, veggie style. I dont know if she uses meat in it or not as its basicly new potatoes in a white creamy gravy.

New fav since becoming a vegitarian- Anything with mung beans(kichari and tomato chutney, mmmmm yummy).

Nothing quite like baked macaroni and cheese, Thomas Jefferson's other great legacy.  Forget that crap in a box though.

Traditional slow-smoked barbecue is also simply unparalleled.

Cool thread.

Beef stew, beanless red chili, and pork pie are some of my favorites. Also, a modified sort of shephards pie.

Then of course there's always baked chicken and mashed potatoes and gravy... mmmm....

My grandma still refuses to give my mom the recipe for pork pie, so she had to come up with her own  ':p'

My Pork Adobo, gotten from my mother, gotten from her mother, gotten from some guy in the Philippines. It's pork chunks cooked slowly in teriyaki/vinegar with garlic and ginger. Served over rice. It's one of those foods where the leftovers taste better the next day because it had time to sit in the sauce. By then you can pick off the 1/4" layer of fat that's hardened on top overnight.

I've made it for many people who now worship my culinary skills. I need to stop talking about this. It's making me want some.

Fact: Originated in the Philippines as a method of preserving meat until it could all be eaten. The stuff lasts in the fridge for 2 weeks.

Hah, well, there's not much nostalgia involved since I'm still living with my parents. But there are two things my mom cooks that I am going to miss hardcore:

-Baked ziti
-Indian food

She's actually a pretty adventurous cook.
