My favorite meals are all recipes created by someone in my family or were recipes created by the proprietors of restaurants (mostly from the 1940s and 1950s) who were friends of the family--those recipes may only exist within the context of my family now. My great grandmother came up with some creative meals inspired by the Great Depression that are still favorites of mine. No one ever got her recipe for "mock meat loaf," a vegetarian dish, but one dish that my mother would make quite often is goulash. Not the traditional Hungarian variety, but rather a Depression era dish that stretches a small amount of ground beef. The dish consists of hamburger fried with onions, bean sprouts (we would usually sprout our own), and chili beans, mixed together and served over mashed potatoes. Yes, sounds strange, but tastes soooo good!

My other favorite meals were signature dishes of area restaurants that carried the same name as the recipes. I was not around when the restaurants were still in business, so I have only had these dishes as they were made by my mother or grandmother. Ham Squealers, a ham sandwich served with "squealer" sauce that is made from a concoction of tomato soup, dry mustard, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce, is the best way to use left-over ham. Jamaican Kitchens' maple mustard pork chops comes very close in flavor to the "Squealer." My other favorite comes close to jerk pork... Golden Eagle Barbecue. The meat used comes from slow-cooked rolled beef roast and pork roast (roasted with ample amounts of garlic). The sauce is a simple tomato-based sauce that gets most of its heat from pepper corns. No one else's pulled pork can quite compare. It is something about the mixture of beef and pork that makes this one special.

Not syaing this for pitty so please no 'I'm sorry for..' kinda replies kay? :)

My mother passed away in 2004 so since then I havn't had a homecooked meal, it's been a long time since I had one and really do miss it.

Mom fixed the best Chicken Fried steak I had ever had, nice and tender, jucey, the breading wasn't too flaky and didn't fall off. The gravy had a nice meaty taste to it and was just right, not runny not too thick. It also didn't go from creamy to runny as some gravies do.
Fried chicken and mash potatoes was an excelent meal, along with salisbury steak. But what I miss the most was her meatloaf.... Mmmmmm really fresh hamburger, actual tomato sauce, simmered and baked in its own juices, never drained the grease or fat off, just ladled it back over the meat.

Chicken & Dumplings was excelent as well, I've yet to meet a girl who can cook like she did.
