I am not entirely sure I understand. Why?

Because the world you have been living in for the past of your life is a dream... An engineered dream...
And what you are seeing right now, what you are feeling right now, it's still part of the dream. And if you were to wake up, would you still beleive you're in a dream, or would you think you're in the real world?
Dream or not, wherever you go, here you are, in Furtopia.
Dream or not, I shall therefore welcome you.

Welcome to furtopia. ^^

Why to what? Perhaps why the large canned tuna slop is has been entered into a beuty contest? Or perhaps why the entire stock pile of saw dust was used to create top of the line high tech nose hair razors?

Your question is but broad, and open, it can answer many of questions for you, but more then you care to know. *twilight zone music starts to play*

Yes, anyways, Welcome To Futopia! I'm Jadnar Daj, your local Lupequine. Please enjoy your stay ^_^

No.

"I'm not entirely sure that i understand" translates into "I'm not entirely sure I understand the purpose of the fur community."

"why?" translates into "Why should I get involved in this community?"

You see, I am Kez Bentley of the gamers. I have been a gamer all my life. About 8 months ago, I became aware of a new online breed that were very into furs. (By the way, what DO you guys call yourselves?) Anyway, I started to research this new found group of the internet. I had to keep all of this quiet from the gaming community, for most gamers have an innate distrust of anything they deem "unnatural", which to them is anything that doesn't involve games. I, however, am not affected by these mistrusts. (although I am very suspicious of the Trekkie community.) So, after many months of researching the community, I finally had a loose grasp on your culture and beliefs (although there is quite a lot I am not sure of), and I decided to join the community and see what it was about.

I probably should have said all this in the first place, rather than give you all a cryptic sentence or two. Sorry.

So can anyone answer my question? What is your community collectively called?

You make it sound like we are the borg, Lol!

Anways, we are often refered to as Furries, or furs for short. Don't confuse this with the Were's/Therians. Common mistake that I hope to explain later in the future.

What you may want to know about our belifes and such is that it is VERY varied. There is no one way of doing things. Quite in fact everyone has their own ideas on how things work. I think that is what makes the Furry community more accepting, and friendly, as we've learned to understand to accept each other's diffrences, however strange and alien they may be.

To answer your question as to why, That is entierly up to you. No one shall force you to learn 'the way of the fur', as there is no one way. My common advise, listen to what other have to say and come up with your own ideas, thoughts, opinions. We are all individuals after all.

And yes, Trekkies are VERY weird. I was one. Still am... sorta. Cept I got my own little world I'm working on. But that is besides the point!

Yes, we may seem strange and unusual at first, but that is common ^_^

Welcome to Furtopia!

Well ... technically, everything is an electrical signal fed into your mind. Neurons fire chemical and electric signals to and fro, etc., to see what you are seeing now.

But anyway, welcome to the forums and furrydom as well! You'll get along with everyone fine, even the dragons.  '<img'>

S'ok, I'll give this fancy stuff too:

"Are our lives truly real? Do we actually have a conciousness? Maybe we are all the dream of some grander being. Perhaps we are the thoughts of some amorphous creature as a means of stimulation. Is it possible that our supposed "free will" is some greater pattern for  the entertainment of something greater then we? If any of these are true then what happens to us if there is change? What becomes of us if the dreamer awakes, the gamer ends the game, or the audience leaves? Do we simply cease to exist or do we sit in limbo for them to return for us?"

Ok, I'll stop.

Welcome to one farily new to the fandom Kez. All I can say to answer your question of why is my own reasons. I got into it for quite a few reasons. The main was to find others like myself, to no longer be alone, but to have companionship. Then, there is the creative outlet for artist of many forms. I for one write poetry and am a budding short story writer. The fandom gives us a chance to introduce our art, music, and writings to others that will not immediately frown down on us and give is constructive criticism. There are other things that drew me too the fandom to, but it would take days to effectively type them out to you.
Life? Ha, the greatest joke. Tis surely proof that God has a sense of humor, all be it a sadistic one.

Hello Ken,

Here's a link that my help answer some of your questions on furry: Furry semi faq

Furry is at least as diverse as gamers. In gaming youv'e got RP, wargamers, board gamers, card, etc.  And then under each of these you will have subsets like wargamers and RP'rs who collect and paint minature figurines to use when playing, or the live action players, etc.  And then people have different levels of involvement, from ones who just enjoy movies, books and art that have anthropomorphic characters (most Disney, Chronicles of Narnia, etc), to people who have developed a furry persona that they may roleplay and they identify with, to the total end of the exteme with people who believe they are a fur trapped in a human body.  I'm sure gamers have their extremes also.

If you are into roleplaying type games, then you may want to check out some furry roleplaying environments like Furcadia and Furrymuck.  These places will let you experience an intersection of the gaming and furry community.  There are a lot of furs that are also gamers.  I use to be one in my teenage and college years (I had time then  ':p' ).

As to trying to find all the different groups out there, I think you only have scratched the surface.  Where is the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), war reinactors, sport fantasy league players.  You could probably fill a book with just the names of all the differents groups out there.

Good luck,
Drake

Ive made my decision. I'll stick around. the community seems nice enough, and something just feels right when im around people like you. go figure.

Anyway, plan on seeing more of me.

--edit-- how could i have forgotten the SCA!?! oh btw im looking mainly at internet groups, not rl groups. Then again, i was planning on adding info on the LARPers so maybe they will have a place too. I dunno.

Heya, Kez.
Welcome to the furtopia.org forums.
Am glad you've decided to stick around then. '<img'>

Furry is seperated from other fandoms like the weres and therians for several reasons, but there is a fair bit of overlap. It depends on your personal take on furry, really. Everyone that's into furry is into it for different reasons, it seems. It's a very broad fandom, whereas the were and therian groups are a fair bit more homogenous.

Am I a butterfly dreaming that I am a man or a man dreaming that I am a butterfly. Not entirely sure is irrelevant  as you are here now you must be sure of your intrest as you would not have posted. And Why what sparks that voice inside the head to move us to do anything instinct, programming a response mixed from our life experiance to answer why you would be effectively answering what it is to be self aware.
