CHAPTER IX

MALU’S CLASS

It was a beautiful morning as the sun began to break over the seam of the hillside where Malu’s class was gathered. It was a nicely shaded area with many short palms and bushes surrounding a small grassy opening a few hundred yards from the beach. Delanne had hoped for a seat near the front where Malu’s instruction could be better heard and seen. Alas, when she finally arrived shortly after her Uncle, the class was already seated on the grass. Surprisingly, Ce’Dra was near the center of the third row motioning to the saved seat next to her. Feeling hopeful at the site of her smiling friend she quietly made her way through the crowd and sat down beside the lioness.

“I’m sorry Delanne.” The lioness apologized softly as her head rested upon Delanne’s shoulder.

Consoling a one armed hug around her friend, Delanne kissed the top of Ce’Dra’s head. “No worries sweetie…I’m glad to see you’re smiling again.”

Ce’Dra looked up wearing a wide smiling grin. “Never stop calling me sweetie…no matter what I say.”

Delanne laughed and embraced the lioness with her other arm as Ce’Dra held on tightly. “My sweetie.” Delanne teased playfully.

Their embrace was short lived as Malu’s voice brought its attention to the mixed group of young adults. “Hello everyone.” He began with a cheerful smile. “It is an honor to have you all here and I am delighted to be given the opportunity to teach you all the mystery and splendor of our existence and its meaning.”

There was a tremendous aura of pride radiating from him as he paced back and forth addressing the class. At least it seemed that way to Delanne; as she quietly listened to him speak.

“I know most of you were probably expecting instruction from Luki, and I apologize for the inconvenience, if any… this may cause anyone.” Stopping near the center of the group, he turned and smiled across his audience. “I am Malu…and like you, this will be my first class as well.” He began pacing again. “Before you all decide to bombard me with questions of our curriculum, I am proud to announce, that despite what levels of law have been passed, it is my intention to fully instruct you in the traditional learning’s of our history, the blade and its purity within our lives…any questions?” He asked stopping again in mid center looking over the small sitting crowd.

In the second row near the end on Malu’s left a white eared female raccoon with long red braided hair was waving a white furred paw. Acknowledging her, Malu turned and motioned to her with a gentle wave of his left paw. “Ah…The raccoon on the second row.” Addressing her politely. “Please tell us your name and what is your question?”

A little nervous the raccoon stood revealing the rest of her unusual markings of her white tail with a grey tip. “My names Carrot.” She managed to stammer out as some of the other class members began to giggle and laugh silently. Delanne thought she was actually very pretty and wasn’t laughing with the rest of the class. She didn’t see what was so funny. Carrot looked like any other normal raccoon other than perhaps the white tail, paws and ears. The redness of her hair was contrasted well enough, that it blended in well with her grey and black striped fur. Delanne strained to listen to her question over the giggles. “I thought it was forbidden for us to learn the purity of the blade.”

Bashfully the white tailed raccoon sat back down, Delanne felt sorry for her, she understood perfectly well how Carrot must be feeling. Malu smiled at the raccoon with a gentle nod and looked the class over before he answered. “An interesting word, forbidden.” He exclaimed as his feet began pacing him back and forth again. “The word sounds as if it were a barrier of some kind…a line drawn or perhaps a structured wall of some sort, solely constructed to prevent the crossing of boundaries or perhaps the horizon itself.”

Slowly Malu came to a halt allowing his eye to pass over from one end of the class to the other. “Can anyone here give an example of something within the laws of nature that could perhaps be seen as forbidden or compared to as a barrier that the good mother may have produced?”

The whole class was silent, most of them held expressions of bemusement as Malu eyed them all waiting patiently for an answer. Delanne began looking around at the other members and realized they too were looking around seeing if anyone had a clue at what the one eyed fox was talking about. Biting her bottom lip, a habit from Ce’Dra that was now permanently engraved into Delanne’s soul, slowly raised her paw as all eyes fell upon her.

Delanne could have sworn she saw Malu’s shoulders drop in relief as a friendly smile of thank you swept across his face. Not wanting to mortify his poor niece in front of the class, he politely treated her as one of the students. “The wolf fox in the third row.” His paw waving in Delanne’s direction. “As with the lovely Carrot, please state your name and then answer please.”

Thank you Uncle Malu. The thought giving her a little more confidence to stand up before the class. “I’m Delanne.” Her eyes sliding sideways to look at the raccoon who shared the exact same spot only moments ago. The raccoon was looking at her. Curiously for some reason, Delanne turned her head locking eyes with the red headed raccoon and spoke as they both continued to look over each other. “Like a flower wanting to…uh…muh…ma-ate…wha.” The raccoon blushed with a giggle and turned away looking down into the grass which spawned Delanne to shake her head. What the? She looked around, realizing she hadn’t finished. “mate with a bush?” She half asked herself as the sentence finally escaped her.

The class began howling with laughter at the peculiar answer Delanne had given. Malu began quieting them down with his paws as Delanne stared blankly into nothingness while her body slowly found its way back to a sitting position upon the ground. Her mind lost in thought. Is that what’s bothering Ce’Dra? Looking over at the lioness sitting next to her, she studied her friend looking over her from head to toe and back up to the side of her face which was busy laughing at something apparently Delanne wasn’t intone with. I’m the one she fancies? The thought etching into her mind.

Malu was speaking but Delanne only heard him as a distant echo as her mind began to formulate yesterday’s events. Who is she? I’m not telling. You mean…You kissed her? I hope she liked it. She seemed too. Delanne stared at her friend, her eyes widened in complete shock. Her mind being so deep into thought, she didn’t even notice that the lioness was looking back at her.

“Delanne?” Ce’Dra asked waving a paw up and down in front of the wolf fox’s face. “You alright?”

“Huh?” Shaking her head. “What?”

Ce’Dra began giggling. “Thinking of Jahmus again.” Her giggles becoming more intense. “He is rather cute.”

“What!?” Delanne’s eyes blinked.

Ce’Dra smiled with a laugh. “Boy, you got it bad.”

Delanne tilted her head in complete confusion. “Got what?”

“Never mind silly, are you ready for the symbolization?” Ce’Dra asked.

Delanne was completely lost. “What!?”

“Geez Delanne, how much of the class did you miss?” The lioness asked.

Looking around, she noticed almost everyone was standing and moving about talking amongst themselves. “Oh.”

Ce’Dra was still giggling at her friend. “I’ll fill you in later, want to mingle?”

“Sure.” Delanne answered with partial confusion.

They began to make their way through the small crowd as a female voice caught them from behind. “Hi.”

Turning around, their eyes found the white tailed raccoon shyly smiling at them. Delanne noticed that her tail also had two small grey rings near the base of the tail and that her paws and feet were completely white as well.

“Hello.” Delanne answered politely.

“Are you really a mix of wolf and fox?” The girl asked. “You’re really pretty.”

Delanne blushed. “Yes, I’m mostly wolf, except for my ears and tail.”

Ce’Dra was staring at the raccoon’s tail and paws. “Are you a mix as well?”

“No.” The raccoon answered. “My father is an albino raccoon.”

Delanne began to get excited about the new encounter. “Look, our markings are almost identical.” She exclaimed showing the raccoon her darker shaded paws and spun around to show her tail. “I have two rings and a tip too.”

“I like your eyes.” The raccoon giggled. “The topaz really shines through the grey.”

“Actually their turquoise.” Ce’Dra corrected her while Delanne continued blushing.

“Oh…Sorry.” She giggled. “I love your hair by the way, it’s so wavy.”

Ce’Dra blushed as Delanne introduced them. “This is my best friend Ce’Dra, I’m Delanne.”

“Carrot.” The raccoon smiled introducing her own name, and then seemed to sadden a little. “You guys aren’t bothered by my appearance?”

Delanne moved in and embraced the now tearing raccoon. “I was going to ask you the same thing.” It wasn’t exactly what Delanne was going to ask, but she wanted to give their new friend the comfort of the situation, she knew all too well how the raccoon felt.

Carrot wrapped her arms around Delanne nestling into her, it kind of took Delanne by surprise but she accepted the warm embrace. “Seems like you and I share a lot in common.” Delanne giggled as she pulled out of the embrace. “It’s so hard being different from the others.”

“I’d say.” Ce’Dra began with a giggle of her own. “You two could pass as sisters if you were the same species.”

“So, what did you girls think?” An excited smiling Malu interrupted.

Delanne threw her arms around him. “I’m very proud of you Uncle Malu.”

“I am too.” Ce’Dra added as she joined them creating a group hug.

Carrots eyes widened a little. “Malu’s your Uncle?”

The lioness and wolf fox giggled together nodding their heads as Malu seemed to tease the raccoon. “Didn’t I tell you, you would make friends if you gave yourself the chance?”

Carrot hugged him tightly. “Thank you Uncle Malu.”

This time it was Delanne and Ce’Dra who had the wide eyes.

“You know Carrot Uncle Malu?” Delanne asked in pure amazement.

He smiled lovingly at his niece. “Red is a good friend of mine, he was a good friend of Martin’s as well…Carrot’s family lives on the north western coast of the island…Which is why you don’t know them, it’s a full days travel.”

“Carrot’s father knew Jahmus’s father?” Delanne asked.

“Yes, he’s all excited about meeting the young lad.” Malu answered cheerfully.

Carrot seemed to be frozen in place. “There…There are humans on the island?”

Malu began laughing. “Just one, Martin’s son Jahmus.”

Carrot seemed confused. “Father never said Martin had a son…did he bond with Aunt Lani before his passing?”

Ce’Dra spurted out in laughter. “There’s a mental picture I didn’t need.”

“Well, I had no problem picturing it.” A soft giggle admitted from behind the laughing lioness.

“Aunt Lani!” All three girls boasted out engaging themselves in another group hug.

Smiling Aunt Lani greeted them. “I see you girls have met Carrot.”

Delanne spoke first. “She’s really nice, is she family?”

“Not any less than Ce’Dra is.” Malu added.

“Hey, that means we’re all like sisters.” Ce’Dra offered excitedly.

The three of them were bouncing excitedly together giggling away as Malu interrupted them. “It’s time for the symbolization…you girls can do me a big favor and form a line over there.” Pointing to where he had been standing instructing the class.

The girls smiled excitedly and scurried off telling their class mates to form a line behind them.

Lani smiled as she watched them. “Promise me something Malu.” She began as she turned to face him, her smile diminishing slowly. “Promise me Delanne won’t suffer the way I did with Martin.”

It took Malu by surprise but he managed to smile it away. “Those were different times love.” He began to chuckle. “Besides, we turned out all right in the end.”

Lani stared into his eyes begging for him to listen. “I’m being serious Malu…I don’t think she could handle the things I went through.”

Malu held her close and began rubbing noses with her. “She’ll be fine…their only friends right now.”

“That’s what worries me.” Lani admitted.

“Lani.” He called out shaking his head. “I’ve already told you…I’m not telling her.”

“Then I’ll tell her.” Her voice becoming stern.

Malu petted the side of her face with his paw. “Not yet…but soon.”

Lani was becoming adamant about the subject. “She has the right to know, before she falls for him.”

“I know.” He answered, closing his eye with a gentle nod. “I will tell her.” Opening his eye he gazed lovingly into his mates turquoise eyes. “Soon, I promise.”

Giving Lani a soft kiss on the mouth, he gradually walked his way back to class.

The albino was a spur of the moment idea. I wanted to add a third character to further Delanne's exploration of becoming of age. I wanted a character that was somewhat in the same predicament as Delanne, but different. A little more open, a little less shy, and unique. I was going to have her as the albino, however studies show that the gene is primarily within males, so Red was created and Carrot was born. She's one of my favorite characters now!

As for the secret... *evil grin* It won't be revealed for several chapters yet, and there are more twists to come! Many actual, my intent is to keep the reader interested and involved, wondering what comes next. Hopefully I am keeping this true as the story continues.

Awesome. Pretty much the same thing with me cooling off the food with my wings in my current story. That was a spur of the moment idea as well. I really like Carrot also. Brings a whole new side to the story.

More twists eh? Well, that's cool. I like a story with twists. I know that you got this reader involved and wanting to read more. '<img'> You are definately keeping true to that idea.

You're quite welcome. I'm sure that others have read it. Sometimes we just don't know it. Besides posting my stories here, I also post them in my live journal so my friends there can read the stories I write. I've gotten some great responses from them. I agree that you want to have more read your stories so that you get more feedback. It does really help in honing in on your skills. I'm more than happy to be at least one fan. '<img'> But I see that you've had someone else to read your stories and that's great. Well, on to chapter 10.
