Chapter one: Beginnings
It was a nice day, the sun was out and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky over the dewgaw park, Kale knew this because he had spent a good hour and a half making sure that this was the case, He walked out of the small house that was the home of him and his magic mentor, the grand vulpine wizard Menzak the wise. Otherwise known as Fastel. Kale knew that the names were just for show, but he didn’t see the point, he had been taught to add funny sparkles and make a big show of everything, kale, being of sound mind and judgment had seen that the display wasn’t needed, and simply lengthened the time it took to cast a spell. He was the first halfling, the first vulpine and skunk hybrid ever to be allowed to practice any kind of magic and he had proved to be the best at it. He smiled at this thought and stepped into the light.
Kale had retained the build and general body shape of a vulpine, tall and lithe, with digitgrade paws. He had black fur, but the markings were mostly synonymous with a fox, apart from the pair of white stripes running from his nose and down through to his skunk-like tail. He also knew that he could spray people if he felt threatened. He walked on out into the parklands to see what was going to happen today.

Kale wondered out across the parklands, he had got it perfect, he could feel the magic holding the clouds back and allowing the sun to stream down on the pristine parklands, what he didn’t realise was that the background magic of the storm was being fed by the magic he had channelled into the barrier keeping the storm at bay, making the whole storm more massive, eventually the storm broke it, and flooded through.
Meanwhile, Kale was enjoying his artificially created sunshine, just staring up at the clouds and thinking on how to get his paws on the next level of spell books, technically he was meant to be learning parlour tricks and other spells that most first level students spent their first three years studying. He had got them all in six months and had finished levels two and three in a year, and the weather spell was his level four test, by the end of his third year he would be at level five. Magic came disturbingly naturally to him.
He was so intent on his musings that he didn’t notice the storm clouds until they were right on top of him, their purples and browns making it look like the sky was covered in one long bruise. He could feel the magic
“Oh Bugger” he said, and ran for shelter just as he watched the first bolts of magic discharge and pound the ground near him. He began to run, he ran fast, using the cover of trees, anything organic that was taller than him and could attract the magical energy, but eventually he came to the edge of the gladed area and into the open parkland between him and the house. He decided to risk it and ran across the field , he managed to dodge the first bolt, but was hit by the second, he felt like he was being pulled back as he drifted into unconsciousness.

On another world…
The woman sat in the garden, it was a communal affair, but she was the only one who visited it, it was the only piece of nature she could get to, in the background, artificial bird song played, and in the grass, a pair of robotic racoons chattered and gambolled in the grass, humanity had even made nature artificial. She walked to the window and looked out over Karnak city, pride of the planet Gesh III, She could see an oncoming storm, the clouds had a purple haze of something odd, it made her feel odd all over, she had a feeling something was about to happen but she didn’t know what, her name was kitnoki, she was originally from earth, but had moved away to get away from the city. Unfortunately, she had run out of money and had had to settle with the cities of gesh III for the time being, which left her worse off than if she hadn’t left at all, but, she had felt that she would not be staying long, and she would be right. She watched as the first of the lightning bolts struck the ground and saw the huge green ball coming from one of the lower quarters of the city. Something had arrived and she knew it. She wondered off towards the lift.

High over the city, in the storm, a figure glided on wings, his figure hidden in shadows of cloud, surveyed the city and the green light. It had begun and he was too late to nip it in the bud, The figure smiled in his shadow, a chance had emerged. He disappeared, the star mark on his wing fading just after the figure.

Kale awoke, seeing nothing but grey blurs and vague shapes. He wondered what had happened. Some kind of huge magical discharge, he felt its aftermath, a searing pain through his body, keeping him from moving, but he could already feel it fading, his vision swam and came back into focus, he was surrounded by metal towers, hugely high, some even breaking the lead grey clouds with their height. He looked up at them, wondering just where he was when he saw something…or someone coming. He retreated back into the shadows. Watching and testing the air… the smell was female, but other than that, almost entirely foreign and yet… at the same time familiar. He cautiously peeked out, and quickly retreated, knocking something metal that rolled down the stone of the surface making a metallic clanging noise as it rolled. He started, getting up ready to run when the female voice called out “who’s there?”
Kale looked around for a place to hide, but there were none, the area was a courtyard almost, surrounded by buildings, the only exit was the way the human was approaching. No way could he dig through the strange articfical stone covering the ground here, and a flight spell would reveal his location to more of the humans, he looked around panicking, and decided to take the only option available to him. He concentrated, feeling the change, watching the world grow around him, trying to ignore the dull sullen pains thinking ‘I might hate this, but it does come in handy’ Kale smiled as he felt his forepaws touch the ground and ran, letting the panic in his body take over as he ran through the humans legs, a streak of black, moving quickly, he could see a small gap, just big enough to slip through in this form. The trap, a old rat trap from the time when the city still had a rat problem, snapped shut on his leg, there was another explosion of pain as he fainted for the second time.

In deep space a ship flipped gracefully through the stars, its sleek hull gleaming and reflecting incomprehensibly ancient starlight, the stars were the pilots only real companion, they ever went out, they never betrayed you, they never turned there back on you, they were dependable, he mused on all of this as his ship approached the planet where he had detected the huge magical discharge, what was it again… gesh III? The figure lowed the ship as he approached, looking through the strangly shaped helmet, which pushed out at the front in a muzzle. The figure took off the helmet as he entered the lift station, revealing an animalistic head, a ferret. His name was unimportant, as he called himself dark, and he was looking for a way home.
