How do you get your inspiration?
« on: December 07, 2003, 06:29:37 am »
I was wondering: how do people get inspiration for their stories/poems/essays? Does it just come to you, or do you see something and you say "Hey, that'd go good in a story!"?
I like to think

Of a cybernetic ecology
where we are free of our labors
and returned to our mammal
brothers and sisters
and all watched over
by machines of loving grace.

When I write, either stories or poetry, the inspiration comes from many sources.  Sometimes, I will see something in a dream and want to capture it in words later.  Other times, I will see something in the world around me that either puts me in awe and wonder or ticks me off and I will write about it.  Often, I will want to make a statement which will make others think...like my poem called "The Tree".  (In those cases I think of the most visual images which would portray my idea and compose words to describe them.)  And other times, an idea will pop into my head from seemingly nowhere and won't quit bouncing around in there until I write about it.  (It is those times when I feel like the pen and paper have control over me rather then me over them.)

One thing I HAVE discovered about writing and inspiriation is... I cannot be told "sit and write about this" and come up with anything of any substance.  I don't like being confined and defined by another's ideas without being able to incorporate my own.  And if the required subject material is of absolutely no interest to me... oh just forget it.  Complete writer's block and daydreaming about anything except the topic.  As a matter of fact, as a teen and in college, I was famous for writing persuasive pieces to my instructors about how I DIDN"T want to write on the required topic....instead of the assingment they wanted.  I would rather take a failing grade and object to the subject matter, then try to force my creativity to revolve around mundane and boring topics.  Or I would write saterically on the topic.

"What did you do over summer vacation?" would yield a response of strikingly violent encounters which would have been impossible.  And after each description of an event, I would phrase the question to the reader "Is that what you want to know, what you want to hear?  Did this brighten your day, shock you, or sicken you?  I hope so, as it is more interesting then reading about camping and amusement parks or sitting at home for three months."  Other times I would phrase the entire essay as a question... turing the tables on the teacher and inquiring about what they did all summer, listing possibilities which I am surprised did not get me into more trouble then it did.  Yes--- I was a very stubborn and willful child and adolscent.

When i do write, i'll start out with an idea I like and just write it down, and see what happens.

I normally get my inspiration from vidoegames, TV, movies, etc. Anything really. Other times, I just let my imagination run free.

My ideas are inspired a lot by music. If I hear a song I like I might think of an awesome mood or situation I could picture as a kind of aide to the soundtrack. My favorites range from dark, brooding ambient music to some of the ethereal stuff by Enigma when I've focusing on a fantasy scene that relies heavily on a dreamy atmosphere. Psytrance for action scenes, ect. I also start out with a basic concept, and sort of "write by ear" as I put it, only writing when the ideas come or I feel they should come. Wrote and entire trilogy that way though it was definately nerve wracking. Then again, it's amazing to think about how different the story could have changed had I written it earlier or later. Makes it easier for the reader to be surprised at what will happen next if you are too!  '<img'>  '<img'>

I get my inspiration from mowing the lawn in August--wait, that's perspiration!  I find that real life provides a lot of inspiration, or that art can imitate life.  If you watch or read the news, it's easy to run across outrageous or funny situations which can then be translated to a furry context.  It also helps to clock lots of hours from early childhood on watching 'toons, and to never give up watching them when you reach adulthood.  Remember, you're only young once, but you can always be immature!    '<img'>

Sometimes you never know when the Muse will decide to visit you.One night my wife woke me up from what I thought was a sound sleep demanding "who was chira and why was I in love with her?" I was working on dialog from my story The Entertainer at the time!

Down in a hole, losing my soul
I'd like to fly,

I get a lot of my inspiration from the beauty of wild places and the simple fact that I don't care much for the insanity that makes up modern life these days.

No surprise really that most of my writing is survival/adventure/post-apocalyptic stuff
I let my mind wander once, but it never came back...

Inspiration?  Egads, I wish I had some!  '<img'>

Nah, I'm mostly kidding.  Most of what I've written has been fanfiction based in various computer game universes (Diablo, Thief, Quest for Glory).  When I'm playing the game, I'll see some little piece and think, "I wonder what would happen if ... " then I sit down and see if I can actually write it out.  Sometimes it works well, sometimes it doesn't.  My first really long story was my parody of Diablo2 - I was just half-daydreaming on my way to work, picturing all of the characters as a bunch of cliched wanna-be heroes, and sat down to start writing it.

Like most others here, I can't seem to sit myself down and force myself to write.  Some months, I can sit at the computer and drop two or three pages of writing every day, and it's good.  Other days, I'll sit there, write, and then delete everything, and fume at myself for being stupid and uncreative.

Inspiration... Mostly from day dreaming or from movies I have seen or stories I have read. Interestingly enough, most of my ideas just come to me. I do alot DMing and GMing rpgs here at home since none of my other friends know how. Sometimes I am blank, with no story, then wammo, it just flies into me and then I find a hard time trying to stop...*except for of course the occasional writers block*  ''

I really hate it when I get stuck on a single word, trying to find out which one better represents the notion at hand. Such as trying to use the word 'Saturated' instead of 'soaked' or 'drenched.' Those are the moments when inspiration comes to a hault.  '<img'>

mine just happen.. ill be sitting there and watching a bug walk across the patio or watching the string from the blinds sway in the wind and things will just pop into my head and start the wheels of creativity. and when i start i usually dont stop until i am done. which is anywhere from twenty minutes to nine hours later.. it just depends on how interested in the topic i am..

I get my inspiration from events that happen to me.  The first story that I'm working on has some truth to it as it's derived from past events in my life. I already have an idea for a second story and that idea came from a night of online roleplaying that I was involved in. Both stories have my fursona in them as the main character. I'm trying to get my first story done so I can begin on the second one. The second one is going to have more fantasy elements to it than my first one did, but then again, both are furry stories, so I suppose both are in the fantasay realm of writing.  '<img'>

I get mine from many sources, music, movies, books, nature, just talking, just stareing blankly at something, doing normal stuff, etc.
