CHAPTER II

A NEW TRIBE

The council of elders consisted of one senior elder from each tribe forming a non partial genotocracy type senate for all species of the island. Among them, each elder had a second member of their tribe appointed to them to bare witness of all proceedings. They met only once per month on the following morning of the new moon. The gathering took place within a small clearing near the center of the island. Ancient small rocks were placed in a circular formation about four feet apart with twenty feet of space in the center reserved for speaking. On each rock sat the tribes elder and their witness. Each month the title of chairman was rotated to the next elder to prevent any one tribe from having a constant influence on the council. This month the title of chairman belonged to an impatient skunk that seemed to be carrying a heavy paw on the gavel.

*WHAM!*

The sound of the gavel seemed to echo through the forest as it impacted a small wooden bench. "Luki…you will not break sentence...Grodi has the floor!"

The chairman seemed tired and frustrated. Like all the islanders, age had no meaning for the body. He looked young despite the matted fur and untidy hair. At least the blue robe he wore covered much of the skunk's bad grooming habits.

Luki didn’t care, Grodi was barking speculation. Standing from his rock he motioned for the council's attention.

"I ask this council for an open duel debate on the grounds of speculation."

The circle of elders began to speak amongst them selves.

*WHAM*

*WHAM*

*WHAM*

"We will have silence amongst the elders please." The skunk continued on when it fell silent. "Malu...Luki's witness...Do you find evidence of speculation in your recording?"

Malu was a bald headed red fox with an eye patch over his left eye. Standing next to Luki he was over shadowed by the six foot tall wolf. Among the elders they were the only pair of species that didn't match. At the height of five foot ten with red fur next to the tall grey colored wolf made them stand out like a sore thumb.

"I do."

The chairman then turned to Grodi another tall wolf whose fur was a couple of shades darker than Luki. "Do you accept the duel?"

Grodi nodded half smirking to himself. "I accept the debate."

Nodding in compliance the gavel came down.

*WHAM*

"The floor now recognizes Grodi and Luki on debate of speculation."

Gathering his long black hair and securing it into a pony tail, Luki walked to center circle. Grodi only smiled and took a couple of steps forward from where he had been pacing. His hair matching the color of his dark fur lay flat and well groomed to his shoulders. He too wore a blue robe as the other council members did, it flowed in the breeze as his smile widened.

"Speculation...speculation." Waving a paw through the air. His voice was dark and subtle. "Is it not true that you are here only to have your impure daughter recognized?"

Luki's lips began to curl but he managed to keep his calm. "Do not blame my daughter for the actions my heart followed." Turning he looked at each council member. "I am here for all those who you..." Eyes locking onto Grodi's then swiftly passing on. "And the members of this council see as impure."

Slowly he paced the outer edge of the inner circle looking into the eyes of each member as he passed them. Then brought his attention back upon Grodi. "I fail to see the fairness in your heart Grodi...you accept my daughter Kekona yet you turn your back on her twin."

Grodi mocked at the accusation. "Maternal twins Luki...she is only one breed, therefore she is pure."

"Yet she carries the same blood as Delanne." Answered Luki.

Grodi glared. "A minor impurity that will vanquish when she bares children."

Patience was still with him but was riding a thin line. "I did not give my consent to your son Brektor to call upon Kekona."

Grodi's eyes darkened. "She is of age and is free to make her own decisions."

Briefly sighing Luki knew that truth. "Nevertheless, there are more Therians who are of age and who are being identified as impure because of their free will."

Snarling, Grodi fired back. "It is because of you who mated outside of your own species that forced the tribes to separate in order to preserve the purity of each breed."

Calmly Luki smiled. "I won't deny that I was the first to love a fox when I am a wolf." He began to pace the circle. "I won't deny that Kekona and Delanne were the first born of a mixed couple." Luki turned to face the chairman.  "Asyouknow...others have chosen to bond outside their species..." He began pacing the circle again. "Some baring children...of which some, are soon to become of age...while others are still within the care of their parents..." Stopping he looked around the circle of elders. "Are they all as well going to be denied their right of the dance because their hearts follow a lifestyle this council sees as impure?"

*WHAM*

The skunk's eyes were brightened with fire. "You will not address this council while in a duel debate!"

Bowing in respect Luki apologized. "My apologies, the question was intended for Grodi."

Grodi smirked. "I have better things to do than study the moral beliefs of each council member." Wickedly a smile grew upon his face. "In my own humble opinion, the others as you so eloquently labeled them...have created some tensions between certain families and threaten to disrupt the ancient lifestyles of each individual tribe." Folding his arms he stepped up in front of Luki. "If every tribe was allowed to cross breed and the centuries went by, would there be any distinction between wolf and fox, or skunk and squirrel, or lion and rabbit?" Not waiting for an answer he continued on. "Or would we be condemning ourselves to look upon our own children in confusion?"

Luki stared deep into the yellow eyes of the dark wolf. "How can the love of a child be confusing?"

Grodi smiled and turned his back on him. "Why don't you enlighten us...after all, you are the father of a mixed mutt." Chatter began to stir among the elders. "Tell me Luki..." Once again he turned to face the questioning wolf. "Have you ever wondered what offspring Delanne would produce?" Luki's eyes began to burn as Grodi continued. "Why the only thing left after a mutt...is a dog."

*SMACK*

Everyone was on their feet as Grodi's body hit the ground with a thud. Malu quickly ran over and held his friend at bay as Grodi's assistant who happened to be his son Brektor, helped him to his feet. Sounds of the gavel repeatedly striking the bench overpowered the cluster of chatter.

"This is a civilized court!"

*WHAM*

*WHAM*

*WHAM*

"We will have order!"

*WHAM*

*WHAM*

*WHAM*

"We will have SILENCE!"

*WHAM*

The untidy impatient skunk got his silence. "GRODI...this council will not tolerate the use of such obscene filthy language, do I make myself clear!"

Slowly he bowed to the chairman. "Yes, my apologies."

Shaking, he pointed the gavel in Luki's direction. "Don't apologize to me, your aggression lies with Luki."

Snarling under his breath he turned to face Luki. "Lu..."

*SMACK*

The council once again was on their feet as Grodi struck the ground a second time. Wiping blood from his nose, he looked up and saw Malu standing over him, offering him a paw. Taking it, he slowly rose as Malu spoke. "That...was for Delanne."

Touching his nose again he nodded in compliance. "Fair enough."

Placing a customary paw onto Grodi's shoulder, he offered friendship as a gavel banged away. Accepting it, Grodi placed a paw onto Malu who then offered the sign of trust with a second paw. Eyeing him suspiciously he accepted with the intent nod from Malu and copied the gesture, he knew Malu would not strike again.

The council began to quiet down as the chairman spoke out. "Luki...You will control your witness or he will be banned from further proceedings."

Nodding to the chairman he motioned for Malu to take his seat. Sourly he walked over to Grodi and they exchanged both customary paws.

"My apologies to you Luki...and to you Malu." Smiling openly as if he were in a different world. "Delanne happens to be a beautiful young mix of wolf and fox...a daughter any father would be proud of." Turning his attention to the council. "I wish to end this debate and to address the council."

Eager to carry on due to the rumbling of his empty belly, the impatient skunk was ready to end the meeting and go home for lunch. "Very well, you may address the council."

Gesturing his hands out to his sides Grodi began. "As you have all witnessed, there is even tension among the elders of this council when issues of the impure are brought to subject." His eyes traveled about, making sure he had everyone's attention. "After careful consideration, I support Luki's request for the forming of a new tribe." A slow ghastly smile filled his face. "A tribe where all the misguided misfits may live out their impure lifestyles without prejudice."

He began to pace in a small circle. "However, it is my belief and as Luki has boldly admitted...that since he was the first to become impure that led to this historic debate, that he be forbidden from further teaching the purity of the blade dance and that this council make law that it be illegal for all who are impure to learn the purity of the blade and the ceremonial dance of life."

The floor erupted with the thunderous sound of arguments and screaming voices demanding that they be allowed to address the council.

*WHAM*

*WHAM*

*WHAM*

The impatient skunk was now standing on his rock with the bench in one arm and the gavel in the other.

*WHAM*

*WHAM*

*WHA-THUNK*

The gavel broke and went flying into the clustered mob within the circle of rocks. Luckily everyone noticed and quieted down as they retook their seats.

"THAT IS ENOUGH!" Despite the skunks black fur his face was turning dark red as he remained standing on the rock.

"I AM OUT OF PATIENCE!" Breathing heavily he managed to calm down.

"I have reached a decision that will benefit both sides of the issue and one that is fair and just."

Quietly he sat back down and continued. "Since there is notable evidence and the confession from Luki that he was the first to engage in the acts of impurity that has sparked unethical lifestyles within the tribes, that he is now forbidden from teaching the blade dance." Taking a deep breath and making sure all eyes and ears were upon him, he continued. "Furthermore, I cannot deny anyone the ceremonial dance of life as it is the celebration of all life and it is legal for all to learn and celebrate. However, the blade portion of the class is the study and perfection of the art of the sword and it’s purity of our existence. The teaching of this art to the impure is now forbidden and it is also illegal for anyone who is impure to learn the art of the sword and both acts of violation are punishable by exile from the tribes." Standing back up he prepared himself to end the session. "With this said, the request by Luki to form a new tribe is hereby granted and all those who wish and those who are impure can and must approach Luki and join said tribe at the closure of this session. Also, since this new tribe will mostly contain the impure who cannot study the art of the blade; let it be known that any and all tattooing of said members is illegal due to the mixture and complexity of their origins from the neighboring tribes. This session is now closed, go in peace and live in peace." Motioning to his witness, they left the circle and traveled northwest towards home.

Malu couldn’t believe it. "It's over, just like that?" Outraged in frustration he turned his back on the circle and began to walk eastward when he noticed Luki wasn't with him. Turning around he noticed much of the council had already scampered off. There were a couple of stragglers who were exchanging customary paws with Luki. Leisurely he strolled over to his long time friend as the last one was paying respect.

"That went well." His voice full of sarcasm.

Luki only shrugged. "At least those who have no place among their tribes, now have a home where they will feel welcomed."

"At what cost?" His single eye showing desperation. "All we live for is now illegal and with you being... (made a gesture with two fingers from each paw) forbidden...who will teach the young ones the dance of life?"

Luki formed a large smile as his arm wrapped around his smaller friend. "I was going to ask you to teach the class...after all, you are the only one I trust to teach the class truthfully... and in its entirety."

Malu's single eye widened. "Who...me...teach a forbidden illegal class to a tribe of misguided misfits?" A broadened smile covered his face. "I'd be honored."

Laughing together they headed for home in the comfort of each others company.

Somewhere in a darkened room lit only by the low glowing bluish letters on a computer screen, a silhouetted pair of hands typed away on a black keyboard.

Blade-one: Third phase complete...Instructions?

HETT: Another package is being delivered...Do not waste...its contents are few and far between.

HETT: As for the latter...Let nature run its course...For now...No further instructions at this time.

*chuckles* Oh, I'm sure that there are others that will like the story. No need to sell yourself short. I just hope others will like the story that I'm currently revising. I need to get that finished.

Well think again, I'm reading and liking it as well.
And I see there's enough chapters to keep me busy until a certain member of the mustelidae family is posting his entire story. '<img'>

''  Thanks Unicorn! That means alot to me! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Ah, Mustelidae. I enjoy The fan fic as well. Is it Chris Foxx's story you are reading? I'm not sure if chapter 49 is finished yet or not. I hope he posts it soon. I love Sabrina! Chris' story is what inspired me to write mine!

'' Yeah, I know. I'm trying me best to get the revising done quickly. It just takes a bit of time to finish the story. Tis not an easy task. I won't disappoint, though. '<img'>

Mustelidae is also the name of a fan fic? *laughs* I didn't know. (I'm very new at furry fiction.)

Edit: oh, Otto was just a few seconds quicker. Take your time, my semi-aquatic friend, I'm just teasing ya.
