digigrade that uses the muscles of the leg (edit on first post)
« on: November 11, 2008, 09:39:09 pm »
I've been working on some digigrade shoes that use my own calf muscles to work that way they feel more like real legs. When ever I see the digigrade leg add on's they look weird to me they look to big and I think they would feel weird with the spring on them.

I was wondering if any of you have any opinions on this or maybe you tried it and found a good way for it to work?

Here are the videos so far

first prototype

How there put together

I'm not sure I understand what you mean? Can you provide a better description of what you are asking or maybe provide pics to what you need, etc.?
Also, one thread that might help you is here:

I see what you're meaning. By making shoes that are twice as long you can stand on the tip of those shoes, but your knees are your own and you won't have an extra ankle in appearance.

Interesting idea, that's a more natural approach since real animals are basically walking on their tip toes, if you study an animal leg you see they have the same ammoung of joints we do, but their feet are really long so they walk on tip toe. Making long shoes and walking on their tips is essentialy allowing you to do the same.

Clever 8) ;)

I can fix that with the suit.

My main problem is keeping me feet from falling out. I'm a bit of an inventor so my minds always thinking of ways to fix this. Right no I'm going to move the wood additions to my boots That way they grab my ankle better.

Indeed! Very cool stuff! I'm curious as to how the balance will be while in those! To me, and from what I could see in the video, it looks like the feet are slanted back (as they should be since that's how normal animal feet flow) and it makes sense in my head that it will throw off your balance.

At any rate, very cool stuff! And you would be doing everyone in the fursuiting community a huge favor (a generous one at that) if you were to post how it's all assembled and whatnot once you get it working properly! :)

Well then, that second video clearly shows that it actually will support your weight, and I could definitely see you being able to balance in them if you had another to wear!

I'll be anticipating more updates! :)

One thing I've seen people do is add a bungee cord to connect the back of the heel to the back of your knee (attached to the back of a kneepad, or to a strap going around leg like this). It acts like an artificial tendon and should help keep your heel planted in the shoe.
During World War I and World War II, German U-boats hunted Allied shipping in groups known as "Wolfpacks". This is in reference to the common wolf behavior of hunting in packs, using U-boats.

that's the one part of the usually set up that bugs me. That's why I'm working on one with out the budgie cord.

That is so cool, but it looks like it would start to hurt after awhile. I agree with the earlier comment about using a bungee to act as an artifical tendon, something like that might also help you to keep your balance as well.

Great work! :D

I was wearing these for a while with no problems the only thing I can think of is a sore calf but that would go away after training in them for a bit.

thanks for the compliment I so rarely get them from the people I usually hang out with.

Well...
Hmm...
I actuallt have a similar project going, and I'm kind of surprised that you pulled it off with. well. less sophisticated techniques. It's a good thing, trust me. XD
I didn't think it'd be that easy to walk in them, but they look pretty sturdy! I might suggest making the base a little bit longer though, or adding traction just to make sure your weight is distributed on more surface area. But otherwise, a good idea! I'd also think of making a leg brace of some sort, if I were you, to keep your foot from falling out while moving.

I'm going to change the wood that touches the floor to something a little longer, and cover it in old sandle rubber to help with traction.

Currently I have the duck tape add on wrapped around my foot so my ankle wont fall out no mater how hard I try.

Another thing I'm noticing when I where it is that I don't bend my knees enough to account for the maximum my ankles will move. If I bend my knees move my ankle can be more vertical Thus adding to the stability.

Either way, that's a very exciting and well done idea for digigrade legs! If I had better hand-mensch skills I'd give it a try. Bah, I'll give it a try eventually! Gotta remember to take things slow and to not go for the hardest things first.

I can already imagine how amazing those will look in suit! They'll be very thin looking and not so puffed out with foam! :)

thanks

When I Finnish the bottom of the foot and turn in into something more stable they will definitely be easier to use.

P.S. I don't know if you guys noticed but I'm really anal about responding to ever ones comment.

I'm weird like that.
