SEGA AND NINTENDO JOIN FORCES FOR MARIO & SONIC AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES

Legendary Icons Appear Together for the First Time in Video Game History

TOKYO (March 28, 2007) – SEGA® Corporation and Nintendo Co. Ltd. today made a historical announcement that two of the biggest icons in the entertainment industry, Mario™ and Sonic™, are joining forces to star in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Developed for the Wii™ video game system and the Nintendo DS™ system, this momentous agreement marks the first time these two renowned stars have appeared together in a game.

Published by SEGA across Europe and North America, and published by Nintendo in the Japanese market, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games will be available for Holiday 2007 and is licensed through a worldwide partnership with International Sports Multimedia (ISM), the exclusive interactive entertainment software licensee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, players will compete in events that take place in environments based on the official venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.  Using a supporting cast of characters from the amazing worlds of both Mario and Sonic, gamers will be able to compete as or against a range of lovable personalities including Mario, Sonic, Luigi™, Knuckles™, Yoshi®, Tails™ and more.  Innovative usage of the Wii and DS control systems to maneuver a favorite character will allow players to race the likes of Mario and Sonic down the 100m track, engage in exhilarating rallies in table tennis and churn water in a swimming heat, all while competing for the much sought after gold medal.

“We are thrilled to partner with Nintendo and ISM on this groundbreaking title,” said Hisao Oguchi, President and Chief Operating Officer, SEGA Corporation.  “For the first time, two of the world’s greatest games’ characters come together to compete in the world’s greatest sporting event and we couldn’t be more excited.”

“Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games,” says Shigeru Miyamoto, Senior Managing Director and General Manager, Entertainment Analysis and Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd.. “In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other.  Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?”

“The Olympic Games represent the true spirit of competition and passion,” said Raymond Goldsmith, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ISM.  “Bringing together intensely competitive and fun characters like Mario and Sonic in an Olympic setting helps showcase the sports of the Olympic Games in a new and compelling way for all generations.”

For further information on this title please visit www.sega-press.com for Europe and the SEGA FTP for America at: http://segapr.segaamerica.com.

Amusement Vision is developing it, Not sonicteam, so there will be no glitches like in Sonic 06 and Secret Rings

Shigeru Miyamoto is the Supervisor

Discuss! Do you think something is wrong here?! XD

Hahah I know... except swimming, Sonic can't swim  ':p'

Edit: Late breaking details

Quote
   * Sega and Nintendo had discussions of bringing the two mascots together in a game while Sega was still in the hardware business.
    * An undisclosed Sega sports team will be the primary developer, not Sonic Team or AM2, while Nintendo and Miyamoto will also be closely involved.
    * Sega wants to reinvent Sonic, so chances are, we won’t be seeing another Sonic on another platform for awhile, Jeffrey said.
    * In why Mario gets his name ahead of Sonic in the title, Jeffrey said, “Sega’s being respectful. Mario is older than Sonic, and we’d like to give the old man some respect by letting him go first.”
    * Kaplan: I’ve been quoted saying that there’s a thin line between love and hate. Now we’re in love. And so I think when you are in love, you are very forgiving. We worked as competitors, and we always had the attitude of kicking Sonic’s behind. Now we’re willing to be together.

Thats awesome! I think its cool how these companies can work together sometime to get things done!

Note: We must make eating pizza an olympic event so that mario can win one.

I like sonic, he's blue and fast. I also like mario, his character is really not that cool, but i like the mario bros movie.

Perhaps this will be like when mario and DK stopped killing each other, and starred in games together?

Quite possibly DDD, after all Mario and DK mainly just shifted their, shall we say riverly, from the more violent aspects to more peaceful competitions.

Donkey Kong pited mario and DK up agaist one another, as did mario and DK, in a way that seemed like they were life long enemies. Mario Kart, Mario Party(the first few), Super Smash Bros. also put those two(and others) against one another, but in more of a "who is the best" kind of way. I can easily see Mario and Sonic going the same way.

NiGHTS 2 LOGO/TITLE REVEALED

Quote
According to Famitsu, Sonic Team USA will have its sequel to legendary Saturn title NiGHTS ready for a Wii release this winter. NiGHTS 2 will now be known as NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams (although that name isn't confirmed for the Japanese market). Famitsu explains that the main attraction of Journey of Dreams is how it provides gameplay with the Wii Remote, where you can glide, drift, ascend, and loop-the-loop without even thinking about the controls. Takashi Izuka of Sonic Team USA is Producer of NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. He leaves Famitsu, and the rest of the weeping-with-tears-of-joy world, with this comment:

"In 1996, we created the NiGHTS character to achieve a concept of 'being refreshed from being able to fly in the sky'. 11 years later, at last, we have broken our silence. NiGHTS will now fly in a new dream world: new stages, new story, and on the new Wii platform. Please look forward to NiGHTS and friends exploring this brand new adventure."

Also, if a mod could change the name of this thread to Sega game news that would be cool!

This would be more interesting if it happened before 1995.

I just hope Sonic Team isint developing this one, they've butchered the Sonic/Shining Force/Phantasy Star franchises bad enough.

I've seen this on a few different forums. I'm confused, are they going to make it possible for Mario to beat Sonic at events? I'm sure it'll make a great game but I'm still baffled.

SonicTeam dosen't do shining force... the developer that did the latest shining force game is.... *looks on segas site*

... CRAP!!! it is developed by sega...
Yes, it would be cool if they released a ACTUAL RPG for Phantasy Star... all they are doing is milking it in online games now... latest one being Phantasy Star Universe

Sonic and Mario is being developed by AM3 of Japan, the ones who did Virtua Tennis 3 i think, thats what it sounded like anyways, one of segas sports divisions in Japan is gonna develop it under the supervision of miyamoto

the olympics people approached sega and asked them to make a olympics game that would attract a wide audience so sega was probably like SONIC!!! and then they were probably like MARIO!!!! and they went and asked Nintendo and nintendo agreed because it will be a huge money maker....

NOW! The title you should be worried about is NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, its being developed by Sonic Team USA, whos latest game was Shadow the Hedgehog.... Scaaaareee

But I got hopes... hoping they do it right.... heres the latest features of NiGHTS from SEGA Europes game page
