Does having a picture make your fursona feel more compleate
« on: December 14, 2015, 07:00:32 pm »
As the title say's, does having a picture make your fursona feel more complete. This is gonna take some explaining i expect so were to start, pritty much iv fleshed out my fursona backstory of witch i still make minor addition's or change's to as is the way of progression but iv never been able to draw a picture I'm happy with to go with it for various reason's, lack of skill and general dislike of how they end up to name a few, i have colour sorted and an idea of what id like it to be but it just never seams to happen, droning aside as a result i feel as though it's not complete and i wanted to know if others have this same problem (don't have to be a picture) and if not then your thought's on this will also be of intrest to me :)
Errrr were do I go now ..... oh right

No. My fursona was complete and I was happy with her before I got art. I still don't have art of one of my male 'sona, and he is still a complete character. Art is not necessary.

[AvanProto:] My current form is hard to describe because i cant just say 'im a [species]. with uh.. [color] and [color] fur'. Having art doesnt make me feel like im any more complete or something though, just makes describing a lot more convenient :P because then I can just linkdrop instead of bumble around awkwardly trying to describe.

what avan said. though my fursona is extremely basic so not much annoyance on describing it.
though it would likely be helpful for if i get a fursuit, getting correct muzzle length, type of legs, and color pattern (face is most likely the most difficult to get)

I didn't have a drawing for any of my fursona's till later. But I do feel it adds to
the fantasy.  At least for me. :orbunny:

Art isn't mandatory to make your fursona more complete. It does help to show others what your fursona looks like or is useful when getting/constructing a fursuit. But it is by no means mandatory.

I'd have to say no as well. I "know' what Cause looks like. When I'm imagining a story with him I see things happening threw his eyes. The only time i'd see fully see him is when i'm playing a different role in that story. Or another fursona.
It's been said that rats can gain access to your home by climbing up threw your toilet. I prefer to use the front door.

Whoa whoa whoa!  First i have to figure out who my fursona of the day IS!  Can't go commissioning art for characters that i won't be using as a front!

On second thought, who gives a damn.  Not having art makes sure that i work harder at describing my characters through my writing.  Or at least it SHOULD... not sure how much that actually happens in practice.

Personally, I need to have some sort of art to make me feel like mt sona's official.  I don't mind if other people don't have art of their sonas- they're still official to me. It's just that I like having a picture so I can show people what my sona looks like. Sometimes people don't get written descriptions quite right in their heads. I guess I jus want them to see what I see in my sona. ^_^'

As others have said before me, I don't think it's necessary but if you want to establish your fursona's appearance and show it to others, it's helpful. I'm trying to sketch out mine right now, using templates found online and shading them with colored art markers. I'm a poor artist so I'll likely take the sketches  to someone who can professionally design my fursona's image. And since I'm in the process of commissioning a fursuit I will need some kind of artwork to provide to the studio which will be creating the 'suit.

For me, yeah, it does. It helps me get more of a definitive idea of what my character looks like better than the hazy image I start with in my mind that needs refining. This might not be true for everyone, but it definitely helps me.

This afternoon I received the draft color image of the badge I commissioned a few days ago.

I need to revise what I posted back in December.

Yes, having a picture very much makes my fursona seem complete. Suddenly he's no longer just a vague image in my mind or a hasty sketch using a borrowed template. The moment I saw the draft image Varek took a big step toward being a real character.

I have to agree with Luchs and Lycan.

For me, complex ideas and things, like my fursona or my game, get lost and jumbled in my head. Submitting my ideas to paper, however limited the media is, helps me to organize things and more fully understand the concept in question.
I only just recently completed a picture of my fursona that I'm happy with.
Now that's it's done, I have a clearer concept of who he is, how he is/isn't like me, what he looks like, etc. I also now have a stronger connection to him.

So of course, artwork (or another visual) isn't necessary, but I'd say it's an important step.

I had more of a fursona when I was younger and had more of an imagination in that way.  It wasn't just one character it was about ten.  I can no longer image myself as those characters but when I draw them it brings them to life again but in a different way.

I'm not very attached to any characters I come up with. Pretty much just use them to interact online for whatever base I'm talking to; just something fun to participate with. I don't really have a backstory and such, nor is it really "me" or how I see myself so art is the main basis of it. I draw my own so it isn't much investment or loss if I toss the character for something else later. Seeing other peoples characters is a lot of fun and the artwork is the main thing I like about furry fandom.

It kinda does make you feel a bit more complete, well at least for me.
When I discovered the fandom, I used Artik as my avatar for many reasons. I felt very drawn to him. (As skuzzy as he is)
But other furs kept riding on me to create my own personal sona.
I worked very closely with an artist and my Helios was born.
It was a lot of fun and I would definitely recommend doing it. That being said, just make sure you are dealing with an artist that won't burn you and that they understand exactly what you want.

I like having at least references in case I catch an artist doing requests or the rare occasion I spend money on commissions. It just makes the process immensely easier for artists.

It's also really helps if you roleplay at all. People like being able to know what your character looks like so they can reply / react to your roleplay better.

If you can't afford or don't want to have art commissioned you can always use a character creator template and color it yourself.

This one http://www.furaffinity.net/view/16054657/ by Zhivagod is pretty much the best most customizable one I've found. I love it.

I used it to make a pretty spot on anthro version reference of my pup Samus. (Except now that she's older the pink spots on her nose are gone and her ears didn't turn out floppy like I thought they would.)
