I had a stupid accident!
« on: July 14, 2004, 09:46:38 pm »
Ok well the other day i was board and wanted something to do, so i decided to make some fireworks. I had about 50 grams of this stuff called AP and its pretty damn unstable and i wanted to get it into a film canister. This stuff was pretty old , couple of days so it was extra unstable.
I built this silly contraption out of lego and some pnumatic pistons so i could press the AP into the film canister and i could be far away if somthing went wrong.
Heres where things start to go wrong i set it up IN MY ROOM ON MY DESK! I put 30 grams into the film canister and turned on the pump and left the room. As i got out the door way i heard this almight BOOOOOOM! and a burning sensation in my arm! Took me about 5 seconds to realise what happend and i looked down at my arm and there was a fair amount of blood!
"ohh crap im in alot of trouble now" I thouhgt. I went back inside my room to inspect the damage and oh my there was a fair amount!
My desk will never be the same , there was about 30 little holes in the wall behind my desk from lego shrapnel. The shock wave of the AP going off cracked my two BIIG mirrors on the one side of my room.
So i had a better look at my wound. It wasnt that bad , about 3 cm long by 2 wide and 10 cms from my wrist.
Well i did a first aid course at school so i was quilified to treat it so i did. I pulled out the fragment , sterlised it and did a crap job on the stiches (which i re-did yesterday) and wrapped it up with bandage. Its been 3 days since the accident and theres no sign of infection. woo hoo '<img'>
Luckly my arm was the only part of my body in the room when it went off or i fear my injuries could be a hell of alot worse!

Well thats my story! and i wanted to share my stupidity with the world!

Well, you did only one thing wrong from EVERY point of view. You did it alone! GEEZ!!!!!!! When you do something dangerously fun and stupid you have to do it with your friends so theres witnesses to laugh at the story later!

You gotta have your true friends around when you do something stupid! You know how to tell your true friends from your friends? A friend will come down to the police station to bail you out, a true friend is sitting beside you in the cell going " Damn, That was fun!"

What I am about to tell is very secret and goes no further then these boards as I'm sure several laws were broken in the process of this prank.
One boring nite my friends and I were watching TV when the movie "Cobra" came on. In the begining there were a bunch of guys clacking axes together for a gang ceremony. Now you have 8 guys in high school sitting in a living room with a little bit of cash in thier pockets next to thier car keys, knowledge of some of the back roads to the near by lake, nothing to do, and way too much time on thier hands. Not a good combanation.
I forget who it was but some one got the bright idea to do what those guys were doing on the movie because they looked awsome. Now you've just added an image of "cool" to that mix and things were starting to go together in a bad way.
We all jumped up and ran out the door and raced each other to the hardware store to purchase our axes for our trip to the lake. It was summer and the camp grounds were almost always full, and the moon was certainly full. Using a little traveled side road we managed to come about 1/8 mile from the camp grounds before we ran into a point where the road turned around on it's self. We still had enough sense to turn our vehicles around incase we needed to escape quickly. We hiked cross country to a spot over looking the camp grounds and got in a line and held our axes hig above our heads. We all let out a screech of insanity and began to clack the axes together, only to be hit bye a spot light on an SUV  that we hadn't noticed 2 clacks into our stunt. Then the lights started flashing on the roof, it was a ranger and we were busted. We did what any teenage males who had lost all sense would do: we ran like the wind into the dark desert only lit by the moon light.
I've always been the "lucky one" and ended up getting the attention of the renager who was attempting to drive through bushes and washes. I've always been a tricky critter to catch in the desert terain, for some reason I'm dam fast on it and I can use it well, at least back in my school days. I ran like hell, using deep washes and ducking bushes to slow my pursures down. I used the vehicles speed against the rangers, hiding and letting them get out and start a foot chase to take off and distance myself. I play this game for some time and I was tiring fast, when the worst part of it happened. I came to a point where I had to make a blind jump over bushes, and when I did there was no ground on the other side. I fell and as I fell I got a view of where I was, a place where people had a tendancy to drown in the dat time and not be found. I hit the cold black water, though not before I took in a deep breath, and sank in as deep as my fall would plunge me into an inky tomb of water. Now most people would strugle and fight for the surface, wich would be all and good bt for one thing, wich way was indeed up? Something inside me told me to stay still, and let the air in my lungs save me. I floated to the surface, though I let out my breath as I could hold it no longer only 2 seconds before my out stretched finger broke surface. The current had carried me out of the cove a bit and I was closer to the other side so I had little choice but to go to the side I did not enter on. Never had i had such a hard swim and never had I been so fearful of the dark as I was surrounded in it in coutless depths on all sides. I collapsed when I reached the shore and weazed for a few minutes, btu something told me I needed to get up right then. I had no worries on being found, having so dramaticly covered my tracks while the ranger was in a wash. I had a new problem, there was a lot of dee black water between me and the truck that was my last step to safety and escape, I had no idea where I was really as far as finding a route. I did the only thing I could, I pulled the sharoening stone from my fishing knife (never visit the lake with out it) and used the tiny compass in the back to point myself in the direction of the road. I set out and had no further mishaps, though I was exhausted and by the time I reached the road I stumbled out onto the assphault. I was nearly struck by a small truck, I stared dumbly at the license plate for a few seconds before I realized it was MY truck.
One of the carless friends had gotten the spare key and was making his run to the city in my truck. He dragged me into the truck and buckled me in before he set out again and made the final escape from the botched prank. After that we decided "cool" wasn't all it was cracked up to be.
The final casualty count of our prank? Countless cuts and bruises, one badly scrapped knee with loss of pants life, and one spraned ankle. All of the others managed to make thier escape while I had my romp with the ranger. That pretty much was my right of passage to "manhood", quite frankly I think I could have done with out it *v*

Great story! Later on i might share my story of a fake kidnapping prank gone wrong! tis rather amusing!

Ok about AP.... Acetone Peroxide
You probably havnt heard of AP because it is an unstable HE (High Explosive) so no one really has any use for it execpt pyros...like myself! Its cheap and easy to make with the right equipmernt. You cant just mix it up you need to synthesize it which takes around 24 hours and like many organic peroxides its very very very unstalbe and has a shelf life of around...3 days. It can keep for much much longer but it tends to decompose and reform in large nasty crystals that can detonate from moving them!

Well if that hasnt scared you enough PM me if you want some more info on this truly wonderful explosive  '<img'>

Varg, just remember that here in the states possesion of or manufacture of an explosive or explosive device with out a permit is a FELONY. It bring mandatory jail time and can cause forfiture of your home. So never do any of this in your own home- talk a friend into letting you do it at his house!
BTW, smokeless powder makes a great explosive, just make sure you can get real blasting fuse, don't try to make your own.

 True story-
Years ago my brother, a friend and myself were camping out. We had been drinking pretty good and setting off lots of illegal firework out in the woods. It was about 2am, and we were riding around in the woods and fields in an old Jeep CJ5. Now this old beater had no brakes, bad steering, no exhaust and only one light on it-a single headlight. Let me state now that we did not take this thing out on the road, at least not when we were drinking!
We were going thru a field that was grass about 3 feet high, I was driving, my brother riding shotgun, our friend standing in the back leaning against the rollbar. With the grass so tall we couldn't see very far (one light remember) and we couldn't hear a thing with the busted exhaust. We had a game of "army" going, with my brother lobbing M80s like hand grenades and our buddy holding the bumper jack across the rollbar like it was a machine gun.
All of a sudden it got bright as day-light out, everything was lit up! We froze, having no idea whats going on. Now we're a 1/4 mile from the road or houses, in the middle of a field at 2 am on private property. When we finally look up, there is a military helicopter hovering about 25 feet above us, we had been startled so bad we didn't notice the roter wash blowing on us.
I live on the flight path for Petersburg's army base, they do low level flights over us all the time. These guys were out on night manuvers, saw us out riding around, and decided to scare the sh*t out of us. They lit up the inside of the 'copter so we could see them, and laughing at us they waved, gave us a thumbs up and flew off.
I would have loved to hear what they told thier buddies when they got back to the base!

You can actualy set this stuff of with a simple electronic detonator made easily, thats if you cant get hold of any blasting fuse! (I will explain how to make an electronic detonator, PM me...)
Sporty fox, just to say , nice story lol!. What kind of helicopter was it? A common one like the old Bell UH-1 (AKA the Huey) or somthing more spectacular? like a Black Hawk?

lol this is turning into the silly stories thread! '<img'> GREAT!

I'm pretty sure it was a Huey, but I don't know my 'copters real well. I do remember they had the side door open and one of them was sitting in the opening.

Well i think i shall share my story of a wonderful prank gone horribly wrong.
It was my friends 16th birthday, and for privacy reasons he will be refered to as 'bob' in this story '<img'>

So me and 8 friends planned to kidnap bob at his party, and record the whole thing and give it to him as a DVD for his present.
andys* dad for some reason owned ALOT of replica guns, ranging from the M60 to MP5K so we gathered our loot of
1 M82A1 sniper rifle , 1 AR50 sniper rifle , 5 MP5ks , 2 MP5s.
We suited up in 6 uniforms that reseblaled SWAT uniforms and two of us got ghillie suits on. andy* and his dad where real war freaks  , they had everything! from BDU's to gas masks to night vision it was great!

I had a ghillie suit on and armed with the replica M82A1 and my best friend simon* also had a ghillie suit and the AR50
The other six got SWAT uniforms and mp5s and mp5ks
oh and we all had balaclavas on.

Now bobs house was near the bush so his backyard ended in bush thats where we went into. Now everyone else at the party knew of our amusing plan and kept bob in the dark about the whole thing.
We got my girl-friend beth* to act like she was interested in bob and she took him down to the edge of the bush were he thought he was going to get lucky  '<img'> .
His back was faceing the bush, me and simon* crept up slowly behind him, raised out rifles so they were at his head hight  and brought my barrel down so it tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around and went completly white, what he saw where to people dressed in ghillie suits and balacalvas aiming very large rifle at his face at point blank range. I moved my finger up to my mouth and gesutured "be quite" he just stayed there looking at mine and simons* rifles. This is when my other 6 friends came rushing out from behind us, guns up pointed at bob and grabbed him by the shoulders lifted him up and we all ran back into the bush, by now beth* did a convinsing scream and had run away....everything was going to plan.

We all ran about 100 meters with bob until we reached a clearing where we put him town and used zip ties to bind his feet and legs and then duct tape over his mouth and a cotton sack over his head. The whole time we were speaking in military formality like "roger that, extraction team we have subject and are proceding to meeting point bravo"
meeting point bravo was just the road outside his house and the extraction team was just alfred* sitting in his van.

we all got into the van and started to drive around the block a couple times , by now bob was really really scard.
This is were it goes horribly wrong.
We were on our 3rd loop around the block when we saw flashing lights behind us , blue and red.... it was a police cruiser alfred* the idoit run a red light!!!!!!
so we were all crapping ourselfs, the officar came up to alfreds window and asked for his lisence and such and bob the freaking IDOIT tried to speak! sounded like kenny talking and started banging the wall.
Officar "sir open the rear part of your vehicle NOW"
so alfred got out of the drivers seat and opened up the side door.
The officar instantly reached for his gun and held it up "DROP YOUR WEAPONS NOW!"
what he saw were 6 men in balacalvas each heavily armed and a bound man sitting in the middle struggleing.

Us acting smart instantly dropped out weapons and got out with our hands behind our head.
We got a ride down the local police station where we explained our stupid prank and got a caution.

but hell we had fun doing it anyway! though bob was pleased when he found out it was a joke!!!!

Here are some pics of the equipment we were using:

M81A1
AR-50
H&K MP5
H&K MP5K
Ghillie Suit

Well since we're telling "stupidity with homemade ordinance" stories
I have one and since the statue of limitations is up on this one I can tell it. Being both a fan of homemade pyrotechnics and model rocketry I combined my hobbies making "one way" rockets with very loud and colorful displays. Having heard about my rockets from mutual friends my dad asked to see one in action, so we decided to launch one from my backyard.  Now we had a large sliding glass door leading out to the backyard though a large covered awning, being smart enough to keep the glass door open, I set up the launch pad and put a small rocket on the pad and grabbing what I thought was a C-6-5 engine ( we figured it was actualy an A series)  and put in an ignitor and sent it skyward. Now this was done on a hot summer night around the 4th of july and the local police had been in the neighborhood looking for illegal fireworks  ':golddevil:'  We watched the rocket go skyward and climb to about 300 ft and go off setting off car alarms and rattling windows for blocks but the scary part was the black and white POLICE that we saw when the rocket exploded, and we all dove for the open sliding glass door under the awning. The rocket exploded directly UNDER a police helicopter that was flying low and quiet looking for illegal fireworks.   '<img'>   Bye the time the spotlight was shown in my yard only the dog was out looking back at the chopper, we were cowering in the den  hoping no one would knock at the front door. Needless to say all my further rockets were used out in the desert where secrets stay secrets. '<img'>
Down in a hole, feeling so small
Down in a hole, losing my soul
I'd like to fly,
But my wings have been so denied. ...Alice in Chains

*blinks*

I suppose you should just be glad that those 30 holes were in the wall instead of you body. From what I hear, lego particles take hours to remove from skin--and that's if it's done by a doctor.  ''
Yeah, as a matter of fact I DO own the road . . . .

Well luckaly AP has a quite unique property when it goes off its shockwave is realativly slow (for an HE that is).
So when it detonates it has a more pushing power than a cracking power so instead of breaking the lego into really small fragments it just blew them into big chunks so the holes in my wall are fairly big.

*hopes that makes sense*

Oh, i had similar accidents when i was littler (not that hasardous)... I remmember i grinded some of those sparkling candles into dust to use as firework-fuel, but i accidentaly dropped the match inside the little jar that was holding the grinded dust. It made a real cool jet of fire but i decided had to take it to the sink and water it before something happens... and right before i turned on the water, KABLAM! It exploded into my hand with thousands of glass bits everywhere. Its a good thing every one of those thousand pieces missed me '<img'>

Replica weapons, now there can be some fun! I have a replica 9MM pistol, I did a few stupid things with it when I was younger  '<img'>   Disclaimer- If you play with replicas DO make sure your victim DOES NOT have access to a real weapon. People have been killed that way. I always made double sure before scareing the sh*t out of someone.
Rushjunkie, ever fill the parchute chamber with smokeless powder in a baggy and foil? I used to spend all my money as a kit on rocketry, we blew up as many as possible! It's great to hear of someone else that was into the same thing.

Very interesting reading.  I have a tendency to try and forget the misadventures of my youth but shall try and add to this rather amusing topic soon.

Somefur mentioned SPECTACULAR helicopters so I figured I would toss in a small pic of a real helicopter that I worked on, in this pic we are lifting an F-15 for the Air Force in Florida.

I worked on the Avionics systems, Quality Assurance and Maintenance Control.  I did not fly regularly but was on "Test Skins" and I qualified as an aerial gunner in my younger days.  Shooting .50 cals out the side windows.  Really cool......

Unfortunately we are getting way off topic here so I will end my post.

PS. that F-15 weighed 28000 lbs for the lift and afterwards we realized (because it seemed toougher than expected) that the rotor wash from the helicopter was pushing down on the wings of the F-15 adding another 5000 lbs to the lift.
