Pets you want but can't have
« on: May 03, 2014, 01:48:00 pm »
So, I just found out that, sadly, it's not legal to own an owl in the US, unless you have a certificate, or work at a preservation center, or something like that. Yeah...

Also, apparently you blow dry owls.  :D

So, just wondering if anyone else has a similar situation of pets you'd love to own but cannot...

Owls really aren't the type of birds that it is kind to keep as pets if i'm honest. When the Harry Potter movies started being released, the amounts of owls that were bought as pets, (Often illegally) soared, along with the numbers of owls being abandoned at owl, and bird sanctuaries and such places. They aren't an animal that can be kept cooped up, nor are they anything short of high maintenance.

Anyway! I've always wanted a corvid of some kind, which is a magpie, a crow, a raven, a jay, etc. They are very intelligent, but a bit messy. I work with birds a lot, and I've seen many that can speak! Alas, it's illegal to own a native bird as a pet, but maybe one day I could get a Blue Jay! ^-^

Raccoon, maybe?  The problem is, what are you supposed to do with it?  Go on hikes together; you can't exactly take a raccoon for a walk in the park...

Or perhaps a badger, like Theodor Roosevelt had.  Maybe even a wolverine?  I hear they make great pets when they aren't mauling your friends and relatives...

If they were legal in California, i would probably have a pet ferret by now, but they aren't, so that's that.

Here's what i say: If you want to get a pet, instead of going to all the work to get something exotic, get one of the cliched ones; they're cliched for a reason: THEY MAKE GOOD PETS.
(Except for tarantulas; they are very boring unless you have the guts to try and "play" with them.)

In high school, I put some serious thought into getting a pet octopus.

Now, though, I'd love an otter.  Except, probably not really.  And a tiger.  Again... probably not really.

Actually, what I'd really like is a dog that's cuddly and loves me best.  I have a dog that's cuddly... but she dislikes me -- she sees me as a competitor for my husband's attention.  And I love my big orange Sheltie.  He's wonderful.  But he's standoffish, and sometimes I'd like a dog to come sit with me.

Or... maybe even better... I want my cat from high school...  That was a great cat.  Hmm.  This seems to have taken a left turn, reinterpreting the phrase "but can't have."

We've always wanted to own an iguana, even though we don't even know where we'd get one without importing it.  :P  We'd love to have a cuttlefish too, since we think they're just the cutest little things to ever swim around in the oceans.  :D  We doubt it's legal to own one though, since most species of cuttlefish secrete poison. Oh well...

A fennec fox!

When I lived in Seattle and cruised the want ads for Bengal cats, I saw a lot of ads for fennec foxes for sale.

Honestly I'd have to say a wolf and a snow leopard. The snow leopard i couldn't have i know that. But the wolf is a slight possibility seeing that her in Pennsylvania you just need a permet (or however you spell that lol). So if i want it bad enough, i could possible get a wolf pup.

A moose. They're very smart, trainable, and I could ride it to school.

Lots of exotic pets would be interesting to have. But we should remember that
most wild animals don't do well in captivity. Even if they are socialized
from birth.

They may tolerate the person they are used to, but usually not others. One
has to know and respect their natural instincts and habits to manage them
well.

Some smaller birds however make interesting pets. Due to the urge hits they
go toliet habits, some people keep a poo catcher on them when they are out
of their cage or environment.

Unfortuantly there are some dangerous snakes and animals released by people
who bought a interesting wild animal. Only to find it grows into a not so cute
or safe animal to keep.

I would really love to have a squirrel. There are a ton of the cute little critters that live in my town, and you can't walk down the street without seeing at least one scampering around. However, I don't think that it's legal to own them as pets in North Carolina. Plus, I don't know how good they make as pets. If anyone knows how well squirrels make as pets, let me know please!

I think it depends on where you live. There are domesticated Russian foxes that are bred to be pets

My husband would probably like one of those.  He unicycles to work -- but, I bet he'd consider a moose an upgrade.  They're his favorite animals.
