My Dad traded up to this. A slight improvement, but not a model for the beginner.

Control line--the model is tethered with two thick 20' threads to a handle. "The pilot" stands in the center of a circle and holds out the handle with a helper holding the model with the engine running. The model is released and the threads turn a bell crank which operates the elevator. the model dives or climbs as the handle is lowered or raised. The pilot turns with the model and continues until the model exhausts it's fuel. Then the model is landed for refueling  and another mission.
