"Oh... Is that gem your food? Let me take it from you and throw it in a mailbox!"
Given that there was an entire episode about what happens when Spike gets greedy, this made sense to me. I mean, sure, the gems are his food, but he mostly didn't seem to desire them out of hunger (except at the end).
I really liked this episode. I enjoyed all the pets' antics, and I really liked that Angel was given some complexity. Mostly we've seen Angel be petulant and difficult, so it was nice to see him show a little devotion to Fluttershy and kindness toward Spike. If Angel has a good side, then it makes more sense that Fluttershy is so deeply attached to him, and I really don't think we've seen that good side before.
As for Spike, I get the sense that he really needs the structure that Twilight provides for him. That's why he's goofy and naive in the episodes that focus on him and not so much in the episodes where he's mostly following Twilight around. He and Twilight are well-suited to each other.
