Actually, I got into it by sheer accident. I guess my eternally RPG-starved brain sought refuge in a prominent RPG arena... and from creating a lion character in an old anime forum, to some links from a friend, and then some links from there, and I found the fandom, heh heh.

I started becoming an active fur this year.  I was looking for avenues to help overcome my shyness and introverted tendencies, so moved from being a long-time lurker to starting to interact on boards, mucks and meeting some other furs in real life.

In hindsight, much of my becoming a fur took place before I new a fandom existed.  Growing up I was an avid reader, especially of books in the sci-fi and fantasy genres.  At an early age I found myself drawn to anthropomorphic characters in stories.  I've read the Chronicles of Narnia so many times I've lost count, Watership down was also a favorite.  I even read most of the books in Alan Dean Fosters Spellsinger series (I always thought the main character was insane for not hooking up with one of the willing furry females 0.o).  I also was and still am a big fan of animation.  The Secret of Nimh being one of my favorite movies as a child.

I started collecting comic books in high-school, mostly DC books targeted at the older audience, but also would pick up any funny animal comics I found.  A friend of mine that worked at the comic store I went to showed me a copy of Omaha the Cat Dancer, which hooked me on to the erotic side of furry art (even though I didn't know that such a thing existed yet.)

Move forward many years.  I became active on the Internet and started to search for work done by Reed Waller (Omaha).  This search led to the inevitable links to other furry artists.  I think I first found some of Doug Winger's older work from before he started doing herms.  From here I started scouring the net for all the furry art I could find.  '<img'>

That's about it.  I lurked around the edges of the fandom until about six months ago, when I closed my eyes and dived into the deep end.  My wife (non-furry) says she's suprised I didn't do it earlier.

I was first introduced to the fur community a few years ago through some rather suggestive art depicting furries in varied situations, all of them sexual.  I was a little confused because, in all of the drawings I originally saw, the furries had extremely disproportionate sex organs, which if they possessed in real life, would prevent them from moving, aside from rolling around over them in vain attempts to stand.

I quirked an eyebrow and backed off, thinking furries were people with serious trouble dealing with the anatomy given to them upon creation.  Sorta like when you see a guy driving an expensive flashy car and you think he is over compensating for something miniscule below the belt.

I then was introduced into Furcadia, a supposed role play place, and when trying to find good role play with a decent plot, was chastized out of character by another player because I was not the feline I was role playing (other then in the game).  Talk about confused.  When I was asked what I looked like in real life, I answered honestly -- giving my human characteristics--- and then was flown at with a litany of posts and ultimately ignored by the core of players I had been rping with because I 'wasn't really a panthress'.

Then I saw the forums here and watched a while.  After taking a month or so to observe, I decided that the version of furry I had been exposed to was not the norm and only was to be 'furry'.  So I gave the forums a chance and so far have found people to be extremely open and friendly.  They are accepting and kind here, which is all I want from the world anyhow.

I am glad I decided to re-evaluate things.  I would hate to have missed out on the chance to make some good friends.

It's great that you are able to give the fandom a second chance, its hard for most people to move past their first impressions.

I've read some of your posts and writing, and from what I see, it would have been a loss to the community if you had stayed away because of a few bad examples.

Lets see here... I guess I've always been a furry, I'm just now starting to understand what I am. I have always felt some connection with animals. When Inuyasha first started airing in the US, I had this inexplicable feeling that he and I shared more than I could explain at the time. It was shortly after this that I started hearing the term floating around the net. After some research on the topic I realized that what I felt matched up almost too perfectly with what furry was. A while later, after a bit of Googling, I found my way to these forums, and that where it stands.

[NOTE: I spent the better part of 1/2 an hour writing and rewriting this post. I hope your happy '<img'> ]

(giggles) Well, it may have taken you a spell to put it together but it was well worth the effort! Glad to see you posting.

Believe me, you are not alone at how you found out about being a furry. There are a lot that have come here soon after realizing that there was such a thing. We ALL started where you are at some point in our lives! '<img'>

Most of the furry boards out there aren't so bad. I've rarely run into problems. It's usually non-furs that cause the most serious issues on furry boards, like spamming and flaming people and whatnot. I've had the occasional troll attack on one of my other boards, and they get a bit ugly at times. The good thing is that users like that are disposed of easily enough. ':p'

I wasn't referring to furry boards, but forums in general. In fact, this is the only furry board I know of.

Ah, I figured as much.
There are actually quite a few furry boards around. Some are more lively than others, of course. There always seems to be a new board popping up somewhere or another, but only the ones that are attached to a useful site or having something unique to offer tend to do all that well, it seems.

Everybody has awesome stories about how they got into the fandom... some of ya revealed some pretty personal stuff, thanks for sharing.  It was fun to read!

I wasn't gonna post, cuz the thread is so old, but everybody's stories are so interesting and mine's very different from anything anybody's put up so far so here goes...

When I was a teenager, I had a hard time accepting that I am gay.  I didn't fully accept it until way later... I'm as stubborn as an ox.  Anyway, as a teenager, I felt 'attracted' to some of the characters in our anthro-cartoon shows. Seemed kinda crazy.  Later, I stumbled on the more mature themed artwork of Scott Fabianek (k-9) and got hooked.  Having come from a comic-book culture, and being very much into cartoons and animation, I found furry artwork quite appealing.  I started becoming a furry art consumer ;-)  I would prefer searching out new 'adult' anthro art rather than looking at a magazine with real people. Anyway, since I was so into that stuff during my young developing sexual identity stage, it's always stuck with me.

I've also always identified myself with animal characteristics.  I had long hair for over 10 years, for example, because I always felt it was my mane.  That part of me isn't around as much, anymore, since i've become less of a 'romantic thinker.' and more of a society robot.

The only way I've really been a part of furry fandom is monthly orders from rabbitvalley, and silently appreciating the artwork put out by the community.

Only recently, I've started becoming more interested in furry, and seeking out friends in the community. I don't know, yet, how "furry" I really am,  but I imagine I'll find out over the next year or two.  Hopefully it's a fun journey!

Yah, i'm long-winded at 5am... if you made it this far, thx for reading!  '' ( Hopefully I didn't break the PG13ishness of the board... I haven't been around long enough to get a feel of what's considered the limit around here )

Don't worry Perimus, I'd say your post hit mild PG at the best.  I expect as long as you stay away from explicit details, links to sites with adult work and use common sense, you won't have a problem. (I'm sure Whitesheperd, Kada-ru, or Benjiman will correct me if I'm wrong on this).

It was adult art that led me to the fandom as well.  Cartoons definitely played a role. And like you, I find erotic furry art more enticing than pictures.

TheGatesofBill, I have a feeling you've been posting on gaming or techie boards.  There seems to be a need in the techie and in some of the hardcore gaming communities to feel superior to others.

As Benjiman said, furry boards tend to be very friendly and supportive of there members.  Keep posting, we don't tend to bite, spray, claw unless personally attacked.  Don't be afraid to post and speak your mind here.

Yep, you got that one right. However, my worst experience was at the MegaTokyo forums (the parts relating to the comic and anime, I never entered the gaming aread). The insults got so bad that I left and haven't gone back. ':.'

My interest in Furry happened when I was young. I worked with a wildlife rescue agency and had the chance to work with a White Bengal Tigress named Sapphire. She was abused by her past owne and we took  She lived with me for 2  years and then I had to send her to the Detroit Zoo so she could live a better life. She got transfered to Cinncinnatti zoo now, and her name got changed to soda-pop due to confusion with an elephant named Sapphire. She opened my eyes to the furry world.

(heh, I should start posting here more often.)

Yeah, anyway, I was born in the late 80's, and with the tv I watched, I was pretty much born into it. I used to watch things like Tailspin, which was one of my more favorite tv shows, and a bunch of other Disney stuff. So, yeah, I've always loved it. I made my first character I guess about 6 years ago when I was 10 and I made my first stuck persona when I was 13 (I've made a few before that, I don't know how many). I've never really known the terms anthropomorphic or "furry" until I was 14. Still, I'm not your stereotypical furry, some may not even consider me one. I just use my persona as an online alias, I don't role play, MUCK, yiff, fursuit or anything like that and I'm not an artist either. Well, I make up stories, but I never write them down. I keep them in my head until get off my lazy bum and make them into video games (I made a 3-part story for an rpg and a bunch of crappy doa-style mini-stories for a fighting game). So, yeah, that's that. Tailspin kicks. '<img'>

I think the furry fandom is starting to branch out from just art, writing, and even yiff  '<img'>.  At AC they had a video gaming workshop track where they discussed how to break into the video gaming industry and the recent trend towards furry characters in video games.  There was a call at the end of the con for a music track at next year's convention.  As the fandom grows the interests and tastes of it's members grows more varied.

I was in high school and college when Tailspin was on and still loved the show! That and Animaniacs were my favorite animated cartoons.

As a member of a forum belonging to a website based mainly around Sonic the Hedgehog and anime and Deviantart, I know this better than many of you. I think I like your stereotypical fur better than these crazed otakus... with tails...

...anyway, I've been writing stories for video games for a while, and with my experience with Game Maker 5 (kind of a tool for simple game development which comes with built in physics and graphics engines and whatnot) I can easily make them. The only problem is, it's a hellaba lot of work and I'm a lazy bum. If somebody could cover music, backgrounds, and sprites (though I can do those, I could use help) I could piece it all together and whatever, and everyone will be happy. Though it was made to be a more visual experience, I may just end up writing the whole thing out, but I'm no good at writing, so, whatever...

It started when I was young. I always liked TMNT and I watched a lot of other cartoons that had animal characters. A lot of the time I would pretend I was an animal as well. Later when I got a Sega Genisis, I played a lot of Sonic the Hedgehog and some other games that had to do with animals like Ecco the Dolphin. When it came to movies, I always liked whatever characters looked the least human (werewolves, predator, etc.) more than the humans because I thought they looked cool. As I got older, I became interested in different mythologies and religions like Hinduism, Roman and Greek mythologies, and Ancient Egyption gods because they had creatures and gods that were animal influenced. I got interested in some RPG video games later and the main factor in wheather or not I liked the game was if there were non-human characters (perferably furries though I didn't know the term at the time) in it. I did a lot of drawing over the years as well, and now that I think back, my drawings were almost always animal influenced. In fact, it was almost impossible for me to draw humans. The final real video game influence came from one called Bloody Roar. It was a fighting game where the characters had the ability to turn into annimal type forms like a wolf, rabbit, tiger, etc. After that, I was on the internet looking for picks of skunks on google because I thought skunks were cool. In my search I saw a couple drawings of anthropomorphic female skunks in bathing suits and became intrigued. I cliked on them, and they brought me to two different pages on VCL. I looked through the drawings on the pages and thought that the creatures (still didn't know what furries were) in the drawings looked interesting. After looking at a fair amount of art on VCL, I saw a good number of references to furnation. I went to that site and noticed the news bar in the corner. I followed a link to a site called furbox.org which was a fur forum. That was where I learned  about the furry fandom and that I was in it.

How did I get into the fandom? I think it all started when I had my crush on Krystal from starfox. I went looking for pictures on the web. I didn't find many sites with pictures of her. (If you know what "pictures" I mean) ''  I did find other pics. Mostly the pictures of the anthromorphic vixens. Especaliy the fennec vixens. '<img'>  Me like.....Then I found everything else. I wanted to know more about, well everything! The more I learned the more I liked it. I'm still trying to learn everything about furry. Almost everyday I would go on-line and do web searches on "Furry Information". I geuess you could call me a furry Jonny 5, from the movie, Short Circuit.
"Malfunction, Need input."      I love that movie.  '<img'>
Still, I am now fully a part of the fandom and I still have much to learn about it.
INPUT, INPUT, INPUT, INPUT, INPUT, INPUT, INPUT, INPUT.

Great movie. I own both of 'em, the second one is nowhere near as good.
