I agree, Sunookitsune, the first was better than the second. I'm sure we could go deeper into this movie and possibly others, but lets both shut up about it before we are blamed for spamming and getting off topic. Possibly one day we could talk more about good and bad movies. It could be fun. But I am glad to finally meet someone who has seen both movies as well. None of my non-fur friends have even heard of them.

For me, it was a process of first discovering what I was (a furry). and then discovering that there were other anthropomorphs like myself out there.  The computer and sites like this one have enabled me to flesh out my identity, and find a sense of community.  -- We are not alone!
Long ago in a galaxy far, far away, I got thrown out. -- Now, you're stuck with me!

Short Circuit is actually semi-on-topic for this board, seeing as it involves a rather anthropomorphised robot, given human feelings and whatnot. It's a cute movie, yeah. Heh.

Okay, I've been watching the forums and doing a lot of self-discovery for awhile now, and after another discussion with my best friend (she finally gets it now) about being a furry, I have formed my own opinion and can say what being a furry means to me.

The long and short of it is, I think furries are born furries. Supposedly the fandom started with people who liked the anthropomorphosised animals from comics. I think the reason is that people like movies or comics with characters that we can relate to (I love the movie Rushmore because that guy was totally me in 10th grade) '<img'> Furries have a deep connexion with the animal(s) they familiarise with, so naturally they will be great fans of comic book furries. I think that there is a very broad and blurred line between human and animal nature. We furs are somewhere within that line. I think the reason that all the stereotypes and bad press are a result of ignorance. People don't think to realise that to say something like "furries are 90% gay" is the same as to say the same of all humans. Furries are a very diverse community, which people aren't aware of, but alas, I'm off topic '<img'>

I think we furries are born with a very powerful bond to our own animal nature. We're the medium between humans and animals, and because the line between the two is so broad, some are more furry than others.

I hope my rant resemblse a coherent thought somewhere and if not, I apologise.

purrs,

~Pillowmint

I got into the fandom after reading an abusive article from a certain website (I'll give you three guesses but you'll only need one to guess what site) and I thought "Sweet, people with the same interests as me" so I had to join. Already I like it here.

I remember being interested in Furriness from a young age. From the first Disney and T.V. cartoon characters I watched, I always wanted to be one of them. As I grew older The feeling took a backseat, but never went away. Then One day I was browsing the internet and I found a furry site. I became totally engrossed and read all I could on the subject. I have been interested in it ever since

Secrets of NIMH and Disney's Robinhood are my earliest "furrey" memories, along with the Winnie the Pooh.

As a child though I remember feeling feral at times, and was very connected with my canine friends. My first thought as a child was  I was some kind of "werewolf" or something, but it's just that wild nature in me. Jungle Book and such stories reinforced those feelings.

I didn't get into full blown Furre though until around 1996 when I came across Furcadia (the only Furry mmorpg around i believe) in college.

I even remember HollyAnn, she was famous for her art! '<img'>

Anyways, I made a character named after a book I had just read (Moon Stallion).

I met my wife to be in that game too, funnily enough, her Furre name was Diana, the lead character from the same book. Spooky huh?

mine actually doesnt involve the internet!  ( i was suprised to see there are others who...evolved this way)

I always drew, I have always drawn comics and had characters that were close to me, since the earliest days (yes I did TOO have friends, lol) anyway, like many little kids I made them cuddly animals all was well and good...
...until adolescence , then I made my characters...sexy..and so my standards of what I could find attractive became what mainstream America would classify as bizarre
Even now that my years long running plotline has concluded, I opened up a new world for me to create, very serious with people getting arms and heads chopped/blown off and massive armies representing my interpretations of different human cultures clashing against each others with wierd religious overtones...even then I decided to keep the characters "furry" it would seem unnatural for me to change that basic fundamental after all this time.  Of course they are not labeled as species as we often do, I maake up their cultures and their appearance too, but the overall appearance tends to be either canineish or catlike with the primary bad guys being lizards
Then again you could classify them all as badly disguised culture groups too so wahtever....

Probably for me the first time I was into animals or anything furry related (even though I was too young to know what furry was) was when I was between 5 and 7 and was watching old reruns of the "Sgt. Preston of the Yukon" tv series. I loved watching that show every Saturday morning, but only because I liked the husky "King" so much (Now you know why my furry persona is a husky.  '<img'> ). Sadly, as I grew up I tried telling my parents how much I wanted a husky as a pet, but they wouldn't get me one.  ''
As I got older, I also got interested in the animal and character costumes that I would see at amusement parks and events. I don't know why this would interest me but it did and ever since then I've wanted to try out this fascinating aspect of the furry fandom. It was only recently from watching the Halloween CSI episode that my interest was brought back to light and I'm hoping to get my first husky dog fursuit next year. I'm planning on wearing it for Halloween 2004 to work to surprise all the employees and pass out treats.  '<img'>
I don't know if any of the following counts as being furry related or not, but it's all stuff I'm interested in.

1. Live action Chronicles of Narnia tv shows.
2. There was a movie a long time ago called "The White Lions of Timbaviti" on ABC about 15 years ago? This movie (and the book by the same name) got me interested in lions and tigers, especially white ones which are so rare. It's possible I might even get myself a white tiger or lion fursuit also!
3. I've read the "Pride of Chanur" books (The Pride of Chanur, Chanur's Venture, The Kif Strike Back, Chanur's Homecoming, and Chanur's Legacy) at least twice.
4. Enjoyed watching the movie "The Neverending Story". The Luck Dragon named Sebastion (?) was my favorite character.
5. I have a great interest in dragons.
6. This probably isn't furry related, but it is one of my favorite sci-fi movies. For any furry (especially wolves) who haven't seen this yet, please go pick up the movie "Dog Soldiers". This film is about a squad of British commandos who get attacked by werewolves. It is by far THE best werewolf film I have ever seen! You'll have a howling good time with this one (if you aren't too afraid of a lot of blood and gore, that is).

i remember in art class, i would always draw animals and anthro-like creatures. my teacher would always give me this stare of "what the heck are these" and i would just say, "at least i think it looks cool". back then i didn't know there were other people lthat had these same obsessions with animals. then i saw csi, which didn't explain anything, but it did show me that i was among others. so i started looking up art on the internet and it was similar to that which i had drawn. then i did a google search of furry forums and wound up here. they say curiosity killed the cat, but i think it helped me find a few friends.

This is kinda embarrasing, but I saw the episode of CSI: with the furry, and I said, "Oh my god, I'm one of these people!!!" I then went to Google (the website I go to for anything I wanna know about), typed in "Plushies and Furries" and the rest, well they say, is history.

I've always had loads of plushies and loved animal art and movies but its not how I found the fandom.

I used to be part of the were community but they're a cynical bunch who think everyone there is a RPer and they got pretty boring.  I left and stumbledaround on the internet.  I found 2's site and the fandom.  You guys seemed much more fun so I became a fur.

Well, I'd always had large bunches of stuffed animals, more than I had room for-and I still keep gettng more, hehe!

I always loved to draw and loved animals. Whenever I went over to a house with an animal I made sure I'd get to see it/them.

I used to want to be a vet, but I now realise I wouldn't like to see so much death and pain.

In either 6h or 7th grade, a Jason D showed me his art and his website. It was like, Wow! I was hooked. I drew a werewolf the next day, and was happy with the way it turned out (I can't find it now, I lost it when we moved, *sob*) I drew a slur of werewolves over the next few years and decided to take things more slow. I was buning out and tired of drawing, was running out of ideas. I registered a geocities account and put up what I had. I quit for a while, then I worked on body structure and head shape first, then eyes and facial features. Still not happy with my eyes.

I used MSPaint to doodle around on the computer, and I made some pretty crappy and some pretty cool stuff. I found photodeluxe and did some megacool photomanipulating, switching around pictures and such. I made a picture of my body with a wolfs head, lost to the virus on my old compy. But lately I've gotten into drawing a picture by hand and coloring it on the compy, which has worked well for me '<img'>

So thus is my furriness.

I was always 'animalistic' in nature. I didn't have many friends. When I was little, I would make myself a 'cave' by pulling a few umbrellas together, and putting pillows underneath that, and then I'd crawl into the umbrellas and curl up. mom wouldn't let me sleep in it, though. '<img'>
So, figuring out that I had a 'furry' nature wasn't hard for me at all! ^.^ The three things that drew me in were yerf.com, Furcadia (which I don't play on anymore), and FluffMUCK (which I sometimes do!, but everyone's always idle ^_^;;; ). All I had to do was make a character, which was extremly easy for me. When I realized that people drew animals in shirts and such like I did, I knew that I was definately a furry.

Quote (Perimus @ Aug. 22 2003, 5:55 am)
When I was a teenager, I had a hard time accepting that I am gay.  I didn't fully accept it until way later... I'm as stubborn as an ox.  Anyway, as a teenager, I felt 'attracted' to some of the characters in our anthro-cartoon shows. Seemed kinda crazy.  Later, I stumbled on the more mature themed artwork of Scott Fabianek (k-9) and got hooked.  Having come from a comic-book culture, and being very much into cartoons and animation, I found furry artwork quite appealing.  I started becoming a furry art consumer ;-)  I would prefer searching out new 'adult' anthro art rather than looking at a magazine with real people. Anyway, since I was so into that stuff during my young developing sexual identity stage, it's always stuck with me.

I wonder how many people read an entire thread like this before they post? It's a long thread, but it's entertaining. Thanks for sharing, everyone!

I'm with Perimus a lot here... I guess I had been into furry things before I discovered the more  '' aspects of fandom. The Jungle Book, Disney's Robin Hood, and Winnie The Pooh were real big with me when I was little. I could never get enough Redwall, though I didn't like Watership Down (I just didn't like the characters very much).

But it was really the, ehm, *cough* side of things that drew me in. I've learned a lot about myself through that kind of thing - it's a crumby way to go, but if it works... Anyway, after a while furriness started creeping into the rest of my life. I started writing furry short stories, wanting to draw furry art, and wanting to play furry characters. I eventually started trying to find avenues for this expression, since I stopped liking my D&D group and have never been able to draw worth a penny. I met a furry at a summer camp in England, and he convinced me that maybe I wasn't the only one on Earth into this kind of thing. I hunted for more furries. I found Furcadia, made a general mess of things there, and tried to find somewhere else.

Glad to be here!  '<img'>

I loved furries since I was very little. I guess the first time I saw a real furry was watching Sonic ^^; I'm a teen and I draw all kinds of furries to this very day.

I used to be made fun of for loving games starring furries. It bugged me a lot at first, so I just started joining message boards so I could find others to have something in common with. I guess what also motivated me to be furry were all the drawings and artwork on deviantart.

I also remember my teacher giving me low marks and strange comments for drawing furries in my sketches. I'd shrug it off, but it didn't take me long to realize there were others that loved furries as well. Message boards came in mind. Joining them was easy and fun but the members were always rude and they just didn't seem to be using the board for the fandom. Took me a long time but I guess I finally found someplace I can talk freely.

The first time I actually heard about Furries was a *ahem* less than flattering article in Vanity Fair. I was interested in this, so I did some research on the Internet.  This din't come to much, though I have retained in interest in anthros my entire life.  A few years later I found the Sholan Alliance series of books by Lisanne Norman, and I joined the Brotherhood of Shola messageboard with the name of a furry charcter I had created (Draska).  After a while I decided to seek out a furry message board and ended up here.
Um....what?

Never mind trying to explain it, here's the thread where I first accepted my furrieness: http://www.vgchat.com/showthr....umber=1
I post as 'gabhar' there.
Anyway, I've developed a lot since then.
The last post I made on that thread was actually a significant turning point in my life, and, in fact, I spiritually morphed immediatly afterwards.
It was quite a powerful experiance.
Anyway betwean the spiritual morphing and doing some more self inflection I no longer have any doubts as to what species I am. I'm wolf through and through, but it took me a while for me to work through all that.
