Title: Zielmann signing out.
Post by: Ziel on February 19, 2012, 10:54:36 pm
*stands on top of a small mound of dirt*
I claim this thread in the name of... me!
*shoves flag in said dirt mount*

Now that that's over with... umm... huh.

I guess a very brief intro may be in order. I joined here (and the fandom) in the summer of 2009. This has really been the only place where I've been active at all, and even here I tend to be a bit of a lurker. I am on the IRC fairly often. Outside the fandom, I'm an electrical engineer, currently working on a contract at a major US automaker. I'm an avid tennis player, though I haven't been able to play much lately. Same goes for the cello, too. I spend most of my time outside of work playing League of Legends with my friends from college. Because I'm just that cool. Or something. Oh right, I'm also a bit of a Brony, as should be fairly obvious with my participation in the MLP sub-forum.

So yeah, that about covers it for now. Ask questions if you've got 'em.

Hey, I already claimed this pile of dirt in the name of Pegasopolis!  ;)

So, questions... Would you rather bite into a chocolate chip cookie and find out it's actually raisins or have to eat cookies (chocolate chip or otherwise) without milk?

Tough call, though I wouldn't really be disappointed either way. I like oatmeal-raisin cookies, so that wouldn't be a huge loss. And I love milk, but I don't really need it to eat cookies. I guess it would depend on how badly I really wanted that chocolate chip cookie :D

It's chocolate and peanut butter flavored, but no swirls.  Sorry!

I guess it's fine, as long as it is peanut butter and chocolate. But you gotta think of the presentation! Swirls are pretty, fancy, and somewhat random. Layers are a good option if you prefer a more geometric style. A bit less fancy, but very modern and still stylish.

Hmm... now you have me over-thinking... wonder if I could braid ropes of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and peanut butter fudge together. Ooh! Or chocolate, white chocolate, and mint... It sounds like a complete mess to try to work with it, but if you can keep the fudge the right temperature, it should hold together well enough to do this without being too messy...

I get to take a business trip for the rest of the week! Heading out in the Chicago direction, to Rockford.
I know several people here out that way, and was hoping there might be the slim chance of getting to meet with one or two. But alas, it seems my schedule will be pretty full for the time I'm there. Which also means I won't have much access to the internets either, until I'm back here on Friday night/Saturday morning.

What a year it has been. The 21st was my 24th birthday, and I kinda decided I wanted to write out some of the more major (and a few minor) events and happenings from the past year for me. So... here goes!

Last April, I had just started this new job. So I guess you could say I just completed the first year of my life as a working member of society. It's rather surreal to me, given that in no way do I feel old enough to be an independent adult XD. The contract was originally just for 1 year, and from the get-go I never really liked the job at all. So my plan was to work a few months and then begin looking for something else to move to. Well, long story short (don't want to dwell on work too long), haven't hit that other thing yet, but my contract is extended so I'm still working here for now, and still looking for that other job. For a couple months now, one of my best friends from college has been trying to get me an interview with the company he works for. I did a preliminary phone screen, and just when they wanted to bring me in for an in-person interview, the company went on a temporary hiring freeze. And they're still in it. From what my friend says, his boss still wants to get me in for an interview, but there's no telling at this point how long they'll be under the freeze.

Moving away from that topic, a couple major things happened in June. First, I'll jump back to that friend of mine I mentioned above. In June, he got married (his wife is another great friend of mine), and not long before this was when he got that job of his, and moved out to North Carolina. So I got to be in their wedding, which was a good time. We were such an awkard wedding party, it was awesome.  The other big thing in June was that another great friend of mine suggested I watch this show called My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I chuckled a bit, but he knows I enjoy cute things, and I trusted him on it. I ended up taking in the whole first season in a matter of days.

The next few months were pretty uneventful. I did take a trip down to North Carolina to help those friends move out of their apartment (they bought a house).

Fast forward to January to some slightly unfortunate news. One of my great uncles passed away. He was 61, but also had Downs. So quite frankly, it was a miracle he even lived as long as he did with his condition. On a more positive note, I got to go to the Detroit Auto Show, which is something I had wanted to do for a while now. And then, of course, in late January I accepted this job as Watcher for the forums.

February, I got to go on a business trip for a week to Arizona. Even though it was technically work, it was a much needed break from being in the office all day. And around this time, I also found a local Brony forum and consequently a meetup in my general area. This was the first time I really spent time with people in the area outside work. And first time I've ever met face-to-face with somebody I met on the internet first. It may sound lame, but that was a big step in accepting my current existence here, no matter how much I would rather be somewhere else.

Then March was pretty quiet, except that at the end of the month, those friends who got married had their first baby. I still haven't gotten to see him in person yet, but I'll meet him a few weeks from now.

And now we're up to this month. Did my taxes, I'm renewing my apartment lease, and work is busy as ever. I can hardly believe I've been up here for a year now. I've grown a lot through the course of this year, but I still don't feel like I'm 24. And there are a lot of things I still want/need to do. But I've got all my time ahead of me to do those things.

Thanks anybody who took the time to read through my ramblings. But if nobody reads it, I don't care. I put this down as much for myself as I did to share it. It was just something I wanted to do.

November, huh. Actually, I think I already randomly have the 16th off work as a corporate holiday. This may be doable. Won't be able to make any calls on this yet, but I'll keep it in the back of my mind.

Just got back from another work trip, this time to Massachusetts. Woot?

Trip there was a disaster. Cancelled flight, changed to different airline to a flight that was 1.5 hours later than I was supposed to leave originally, that flight got delayed about an hour...

At least the trip back here was fairly smooth, though it was a two-parter with a layover between.  And I also up and bought a laptop so I could have internet access to keep me busy at the airports and hotels... definitely worth it.

Yay Massachusetts.   ;)
Glad your trip home was well at least...f

Where in Massachusetts did you go?

The plant was in Lowell, and I stayed in Chelmsford. They're basically mid-way between Boston and Manchester NH. Which is why I tried to fly into/out of Manchester. Unfortunately, I had to fly into Boston instead on the way there. Flight out didn't change though, so I still got to leave through Manchester. Much better/easier experience there than at Boston.

To say that I 'play cello' may be a bit of an overstatement anymore. They say I used to be fairly decent at it (I'm far too critical of myself to give a valid assessment). But since high school, I've pretty much only played at church, and then was convinced by a friend to join the orchestra in college in my senior year. Despite basically 3 years without playing any real music, or at least anything particularly difficult, I still made 3rd chair. Not terrible I suppose. But since college, I haven't really done anything more than just get it out and mess around now and again. I need some actual music to play...

Well, I mentioned something about it in passing in the 'car freaks' thread. But, well, this happened faster than I expected. Lots of things came together at just the right time that I could pull the trigger on the new car. I just brought it home today! It's really blasted hot out, but I ran out and snagged a quick shot of it. Large image is large, so have a boring old link instead:

Hmm. Why did I pick the cello...

Well, I was pretty well set on playing a stringed instrument, mostly because my sister was already playing violin when I was making my decision. However, for that same reason, I didn't want to actually go with the violin. The bass didn't interest me, probably because of how large it was. I was a very small kid back then. That left the viola or cello. I considered going for the viola, but decided against it, because I didn't want to have to learn the different clef that it's written in (already had a few years of piano under my belt at this point). So, that pretty much left the cello. I think I'd have gone for flute if I had to pick a band instrument.

So... over 4 years into the fandom, and I can honestly say I've never had that solid of a grasp on my own character design. I'd think of little things here and there, but never really turned them into anything concrete.

After being back from MFF, I finally decided enough was enough, and looked for artists who could make a simple ref sheet for me, who were also willing to take on a little design work if I gave them the general concept I was going for. Here's the final design, if you ever wanted to know what I look like. It was done by Neon Slushie (http://www.furaffinity.net/user/neonslushie).

As for the signature, that was drawn up by an old member here, and not long after I joined, either. I think that was the first thing I ever had drawn with my character, too.

XD

Hadn't seen that before. Though I must say it's quite clear the guy wasn't a native German speaker (that, or he was really over-emphasizing things). And I'm talking other than the obvious intentional yelling. He held onto his vowels far too long. German is dominated by consonants, and the vowels just kinda play a support role to link things together. If they could do away with vowels completely, they probably would :P

We used to make fun of how easy it is to be coarse and shout with the German language in a German classes, but when you speak normally and link properly, it is usually a fluid nice language I think ^-^

Well, since I got the new ref, I felt it would be wrong not to use it for something.

I've always adored Kalida's (http://www.furaffinity.net/user/kalida) work, and happened to catch her open for some quick commissions. I've kinda wanted to see what Ziel would look like as a kid, and it fits super well with Kalida's art style, so that's what I went for. And here's the result:

And while sharing art stuff, I think some of you may recognize the artist who surprised me with this one the other day:

Thanks Mylo!

One more sketch update!

Just got this done not long ago by Goldenrod (http://www.furaffinity.net/user/goldenrod). Love his toony style, and first pic with part of his back marking showing :D

So... one more for the sketch train. This time, from Kipper (http://www.furaffinity.net/user/kipper):

Got to watch this one drawn on him stream, too. It's fun to get to watch the creation process in action! Also, Kipper can do sketches like these crazy fast O.O

I got this a bit ago, but am just now getting around to sharing it here. I haven't gotten any other arts for a while, though I do have a custom tail on order. Can't wait to see that, but I think one of the fur colors was out of stock and had to be put on back-order. Hopefully they'll be able to fill that soon!

Well, I got two more things to share again!

First, there's a piece I got several weeks ago, now. It's a second piece from Kipper, but colored and shaded and all that good stuff this time around! So here I am hugging my Yoshi plush ^^

Next up is one that I only just got a couple days ago. I decided to treat myself to a little something for my birthday (not that it's actually birthday-related, but still). This one is by scruffkerfluff (http://www.furaffinity.net/user/scruffkerfluff).

For the few who have met me, a picture of me dancing might seem a bit out of character (Mylo knows first-hand of my refusal to let go and dance). Think of this more as what I'm doing in my mind when I'm relaxed and absorbed in music.

Got another piece I wanted to share, because it gives me a reason to update this thread.

Voltage-X (https://www.furaffinity.net/user/voltage-x) on FA has been doing some pay-what-you-want streams recently. I watched for an evening or two, and decided to jump in on it myself. She does some very cute work, and probably should have more watchers than she has right now. /shameless plug

I couldn't come up with any ideas though, so I linked my ref and told the other people watching to come up with something. Somebody said 'He'd make a cute Rambo'. And thus, this happened :D

I added the idea to make it a NERF gun and darts because, well... NERF WARS! But I also wanted to keep it fun and light, and thought the NERF gun just kinda pulled it all together.

that picture of you going commando with a nerf gun was just adorable

and if you are going to start a nerf gun fight

word of CAUTION i am a stone cold killer when it comes to nerf wars i can reload in seconds and dodge bullets with ease and have quick agility and deadly accuracy

start this war and i asure you you will be lit up so hard your fur will be coated in darts

Yeah, until you find out that they fit perfectly inside of a 1/2 inch PVC pipe.  Use them like blow dart guns, it'll give you genuine welts.  Unbeatable range too.  8)

I've discovered that there's a decent-sized community out there that's big into nerf things. Particularly in the area of customizing stock NERF guns, or even building their own from scratch. Simplest two changes you can make to a stock one that'll really boost it is to remove the piece that restricts airflow when firing the dart and upgrading to a stronger spring. Taking out the restrictor piece, even with the stock spring, will get you 30-40 feet of range. Never did measure the range for my friend who replaced the spring, too, but it was quite impressive.

Update!

I just got back from vacation. Went with the family out to Arizona/Utah to see a bunch of the national parks out there.  I took way too many pictures to share even a small percentage of them. So I'll just choose the one of a rainbow in the Grand Canyon :D

We visited both the North and South rims of the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Arches. And a few random other sightseeing places, too. It was pretty awesome. I'm so used to the fairly boring scenery in Ohio/Michigan, that pretty much anything larger than a hill was at least mildly interesting to us all.

I'll hopefully be able to get some good pictures of it after it gets here.

The waiting up until this point has been pretty easy because it didn't really feel like it was really happening until we got the DTD done. Then it was still kinda waiting in the dark unsure of the progress. Then suddenly it's done! These next few days while it's in transit here are going to kill me.

Yes, will do! It should be here Thursday, if the FedEx tracker isn't just teasing me. I'll have to see what I can do to get a few pics of it myself and such.

His convention debut with likely not happen all the way until MFF in December. I don't currently have any others planned this year, but we'll see if something comes up.

Perfectly golden brown. Every time.

There is no temperature or timer setting needed. I toast to perfection automagically.

I don't have to work tomorrow, so perhaps I'll get out the tripod and the good camera and try to get a few better pictures, as long as I can keep them from looking like mug shots.

Going to need more time to process before I can put together a more detailed review...

Explanation, good news, and an apology.

Hey guys!

It's been a while since I've been around, especially regularly. I'd like to start out by apologizing for my absence and explaining what's been going on. It wasn't exactly planned, but it was unfortunately necessary. The last several months have been, simply put, pretty awful for me. Work pains increasing and fruitless job searching have worn me down. A lot. I lacked the energy to really do much of anything, and really worked myself into a pretty bad spot. I don't want to dwell on this too much, but yeah. Just been a rough period as of late.

However, things are finally changing for the better. I just got a job offer on Friday, and I will be accepting it. The job finally has me doing something I'm excited about, so hopefully work won't be nearly as draining anymore. Also, I'll be able to move away from where I'm currently living. I'll be moving to the Dallas area with Alsek. I'm looking forward to actually being able to have some social interactions outside work, and actually living in a place with a pretty active furry community ^^

So yeah, things finally feel like they're working out for the better. I'm going to be extremely busy these next two weeks with packing, planning, and moving. But once I get settled in down there, I should finally have the energy that I need to be back here regularly.

~Ziel

As some of you may know, I've been on hiatus from my Admin duties for a while now. Well... some of you might not actually know, cause I've probably been gone for the entire time many of you have been here >.<
However, it's time for me to finally step down once and for all. I've got a lot of things going in my life (good things!), which is why I've not been able to devote the time needed for staffing this place for the last couple years.

So to those who remember me, it's been fun, and maybe I'll be around now and again to post. If you really want to keep up with me, I'm most active on Twitter at this point (@zielfox). To those who have no idea who this strange fox is, please enjoy your time here. It really is a good place in the fandom. I've just outgrown my ability to properly serve as staff here, and it'll be best for the forums to have a full staff of enthusiastic, active members to keep the place going for years to come.
