how big would a pic have to be in order for it to be too big to post?

pixels, as in 700 pixels wide and 700 pixels tall at maximum, if it's bigger, it will be resided to 700 by 700,
If you don't know the size of the picture, look for image property's, or image info in your browser, it's usually a right click.

Also, for future reference, questions such as this are most appropriate for the services support subforum (accessible from near the bottom of the main page).  The subforum you posted to is more geared toward handling life crises of various natures.
