Title: What's Your Cutie Mark?
Post by: Sky Striker on June 30, 2011, 09:53:20 pm
For those of you who don't know, a cutie mark (http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Cutie_mark) is an image which appears on one's flank (upper thigh) which describes your "special talent" or trait that sets you apart from others. It can be something about your personality, what you do or what you aim to be. And while you're at it, why not tell us your pony name?

You can either describe what it would look like, or make an image and post it! Here's what I see mine to be.

The pen and ink in the front show that I like to write, and the world in the background shows that I like to create my own worlds when I write. My pony name would be Authrite, a portmanteau of author and write.

So go ahead, what's yours?

Mine, personally, would be something tennis related. Tennis racquet and/or tennis balls.

My fursona on the other hand, would be either a peanut butter cup (with a bite taken out) or a target. Come to think of it, he actually does have a target marking kinda on the outside of of his upper right thigh... But if he were to be ponified, I'd probably go with the peanut butter cup. It's more cute and less like hunting practice.

Hmm. I'm really not sure :o.

Throughout my life, I've always been really really good at picking up the basics of new skills, but never have the patience to delve deeper into any of the things. A jack of all trades and a master of none, I guess. Maybe something music related?

There are a few Ponies out there whose cutie marks I just..don't understand.

Derpy. Her special talent is..bubbles.

There are two more where I've thought this as well. The one with the carrots and the one with the cherries. What sort of special talent is carrots :o!?

I'm sorry, Shim, but that information is classified.

Its probably something similar to Applejack's family.

Mine would probably be something Art related, probably a general combination of the various art forms I enjoy.(Music, Writing, Drawing.)

I knew what my talent would be, but took me a while to figure out a cutie mark or name. I finally came up with them. My favorite hobby is to tinker and play with various lighting equipment and visualization tools like what you'd see at a dance club or con dances (of which I've worked a few). So I decided my mark and and name would be about the same after looking at an old commissioned piece I have in a club setting. Laser Strobe. The mark would be a laser emmiter and strobe light shining their beams crossed over one another. If I could draw, I'd make something to post as a pic.

Best part is, I'd get to hang out with Vinyl Scratch. :D

There are a few Ponies out there whose cutie marks I just..don't understand.

Derpy. Her special talent is..bubbles.

Being a Derpy fan and spotter of hers in the series, I have the answer to this. Derpy Hooves is a little scatter brained and directionally incoherent. There is an old phrase that is not much used anymore, but Lauren Faust's team must have really done their homework to dig it up. It called being "Bubble Headed". So since her special talent is being confused, lost and over burdened with mutli-tasking and eating muffins, her cutie mark became bubbles.

Kishi pretty much nailed the answer regarding the fruit based cutie marks. Like the Apple family, someone with a fruit on them is an expert in that field. Such as a champion Cherry Tree horticuluralist or a Carrot Farmer. Someone with a Carrot cutie mark you could just imagine how popular they would be in Ponyville.

As for your own Shim, A Jack of all Trades but Master of None. That could be cutie markerized by this:

Being a soldier on my own, a man against the world, I am alone. I stand my ground against all i believe is wrong. I might still be young, and others might say that I lack the experience to say what I thing is truth, but I still stand stand strong. My cutie would have to be the emblem of my gamers mark.

Sorry for it being so small, but that is my mark. The lone wolf.

I've thought of something similar for myself...  Except, instead of Earth or any other single world behind the ink and quill, I think it would be a spiral galaxy.

Someone might notice it's the first creature in the chart of primate evolution. I'm currently a student of evolutionary biology and it's the subject I'm not only the most fascinated with, but something I think about all the time and tie in every character I make to.

Super sparkly theatre masks if I had any say about it, but if it's based on talents it could be something to do with science, exploding flasks or something biology related, or it could be writing related, or history, or business, or political, or fashion, or artsy or general coolness. =>.>;= But theatre is really my thing so the ULTRA SHINYSPARKLEY greek theatre masks would probably be the best, it goes with my fabulous personality too =^.^= ... although something gambling related would also suit me. =>.>=

Probably just the head of a robotic dog. I don't have any special talents and my robot dog obsession is the only trait I have that seems unique enough to qualify.

If we're talking "me" then it would be two crossed pens under a gaming die, all on an open book.

If we're talking "Landrav" and whatever version of him is most "canon"... a rocket with its exhaust curling around the Earth.

However, I have no idea what my pony name would be. I'm such a recent convert, I haven't even seen all the episodes, let alone getting into extended material.

Then finding a name is fairly easy. I'm a nighttime person, I love the dark and especially the night skies. My cutie mark fits my name perfectly, A cresent moon with three stars. My pony name: Starmoon Shroud.

Hmm, I probably would not be a unicorn, and the pegasi seem to be a really high-adrenaline bunch.  So, Earth pony it is.  Simple brown coat would do, but I'd have blue hair.  I mean, you've GOTTA have blue hair! ;)

I'd probably name myself Story Scribbler.

The pony was made using one of those online generator thingies, and I muddled through the spartan background.  Now all I'm missing is the cutie mark   :-[

Hmmm, with a name like Story Scribbler I'd think your cutie mark would be a quill in a ink well sitting next to a book.

Well, the book/pens/dice idea I had earlier kind of encompasses all the ways I do stories: read/write/game.  However, a simple mark would be good, too, if it meant easier recognition.  I can see how it would be hard to make out a gaming die in a mark that size.  The Mane 6 each have a pretty simple mark; RD's is maybe the most complex, but the high contrast of the colors makes it stand out.

I actually forgot about the whole picking-the-type-of-pony thing when coming up with my base concept for Double Fault (referenced in the Photo/Video thread). I'm stuck between Earth and Pegasus, but leaning toward Pegasus. Wings would be cool.

I still really need to get a vector of him...

That could work, but wouldn't that get dizzying? then again, the ponies seem to hold everything in their mouths for the most part anyhow.

I just like the wings too much, though.

That's me! Music is my life, so I would have a musical note as my mark. I'd prefer an organ keyboard, but the note is easier to work with! (Even though I only play improvised). I've gotta say I had a lot of fun with that pony generator (and Photoshop...) :D

(Pony generator: http://generalzoi.deviantart.com/art/MLP-FiM-Pony-Creator-Beta-210228500 (http://generalzoi.deviantart.com/art/MLP-FiM-Pony-Creator-Beta-210228500))

I haven't thought of a name for him yet, but I'm thinking along the lines of "Knightingale." You know, knight-in-shining-armor and all that...

Just go with something simple. You can see my OC Pony in my signature, named Authrite, has a very simple cutie mark: a pen and ink. You can do something similar.

Now I think about it, maybe you're right.  The more complicated these get, the less iconic they become.

And maybe my ponysona isn't quite right, either.  I'll stick with Scribbler as my name for places like Ponychan, but I tried one of those pony name generators and got The Great and Powerful Windy Heart.  Haha!  Sounds like it has elements of all the different types of ponies!

But I do kind of like that name: Windy Heart.  Maybe I'll go pegasus?  And my personality really can be "in the clouds" sometimes :D  So, what kind of cutie mark would Windy Heart have?

With my deep passion for vintage computers (and computers in general) being what it is, if I had a "pony-sona" its cutie mark would be this:

The mighty "C:\>" prompt from the greatest operating system to ever grace the registers of an 8086 microprocessor, MS-DOS!  I get warm and fuzzy just thinking about that majestic black screen being projected on a glowing CRT!   :)

With that said, when I decided to respond to this topic I didn't realize that along with people showing off their pony-sona's cutie marks that they were also sharing the names of their pony-sonas.  It actually took me a couple of weeks of pondering off and on about this thread to come up with my cutie mark, and up until right now I had never considered what my pony's name would be.  To keep in the spirit of things, after about a minute-and-a-half of last-minute thinking about it, I have decided that a good name for my pony-sona would be "Blinkenlight."  That name works on two levels for me, first of all because the name is computer-related (you can read the Jargon File entry on what "blinkenlights" are here (http://catb.org/jargon/html/B/blinkenlights.html)), and unlike most computer terms it actually sounds like it could be a "My Little Pony" name.  So until I come up with something better, Blinkenlight works!

My only problem now is the fact that based on the few episodes of MLP:FIM that I have seen, there seems to be no computing technology in the land of Equestria what-so-ever.  There aren't even any electromechanical relays!  (The horror!)  As a result, in that world most of my talents would be useless!   :'(  So it looks like I would be the saddest most useless pony in the town of Ponyville, crying myself to sleep at night and the crying myself back awake again the next morning and spending my days halfheartedly pushing beads around on my binary abacus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abacus#Binary_abacus) while waiting for the inventions of electricity, the switch, and the relay to one day finally arrive...  *sigh*

...or on second thought I could just spend all of my time in Equestria hitting on Applejack...  Yeah, that works!   :D

No, really.

Unicorns can manipulate things with magic, and the earth ponies are innovative enough that they could probably come up with stuff to harness electricity. (Potato battery, anyone?) The pegasus ponies have shown to control the weather, so lightning could be a startup...boost.

Hey, thanks for the replies everyone!

I wouldn't worry about the "No Computers" thing. They have electricity and DJs so there must be computers. How else would Vinyl Scratch lay such awesome beats on the dance floor?

Hmmm.  I have seen 12-episodes of MLP:FIM so far, and apparently the episode with Vinyl Scratch wasn't one of them, so until I read this I wasn't aware of that character or that the ponies had electricity.  Everything that I have seen so far in the show has been open-flame lanterns, horse-drawn ploughs, quill pens, and using dragon-breath to some how magically send letters.  However, if there are DJ ponies out there with turntables, that means that there are transistors out there (or at the very least "firebottles" (http://catb.org/jargon/html/F/firebottle.html)), and I can work with that!

How can the ponies have comps, electricity, etc.? How are they going to be able to run and use things without fingers/hands? All they have is hooves.  :P

Hooves are yet another reason (among many) as to why you will never ever in a million years see me joining Liedt's Ungulates United local #416.  (Another is the fact that my favorite kind of ungulate happens to be square-shaped, has five holes punched through it, is steam-grilled on a bed of onions, and comes in a white paper sack that says "White Castle" on it!  :D )  I replied to this topic about a MLP cutie mark just for fun-- I tend to use a couple different vulpine characters of mine as my fursonas in the furry fandom at large-- I am as of yet still successfully resisting the virulent epidemic-like trend of becoming a "brony!"  (Either that or I am just still in denial about it!)

Magic.

No, really.

Unicorns can manipulate things with magic, and the earth ponies are innovative enough that they could probably come up with stuff to harness electricity. (Potato battery, anyone?)

Speaking of being really nerdy, I looked up that a potato, when used as a battery, can produce about 0.00027-watts of power (by the way, it is the potential difference of the copper and zinc electrodes that produce the electric current-- the potato just provides the electrolyte in the form of phosphoric acid).  I am not sure how much power my Core 2 Quad-based machine is currently pulling under an average load (I don't have a "Kill-a-watt" meter to check), but to be able to provide enough power for its power supply's maximum rated 500-watts I would need a minimum of 1,851,852-potato batteries linked up in series, and that wouldn't guarantee how long those potato-batteries could provide that amount of power.  Despite my looking, I could not find a listing for the amp-hour rating of a potato battery!   :D

Hmmm, while they wouldn't be as good to use as a battery electrolyte as lemons, apples contain malic acid. If I could find enough copper and zinc (or even better copper and magnesium) to use as electrodes I could probably wire-up my PC to 1.85-million apples in the trees of Applejack's apple orchards to use for power!  You don't think that she would mind, do you?   :P  Otherwise I had better use my pony hooves to start scratching at the ground to find some healthy chunks of Uranium!   :D

The pegasus ponies have shown to control the weather, so lightning could be a startup...boost.

Lightning may be great for time-traveling DeLoreans, but when it comes to computers lightning is a Bad Thing.  Despite my having all of my equipment at home wired up though decent surge protectors, over the years I have still lost a router, a wireless access point, and most tragically a SGI Indy workstation (http://www.digibarn.com/collections/systems/sgi-indy/index.html) to lightning storms.   :(  Those weather pegasi are not getting anywhere near my underground computer-laden cave!   :P

Most likely since I like art it would be a
paintbrush and Palette.

So how would a pony draw. Brush/pencil in the mouth or a
hoof attachment.

There are handicapped artists who draw using their mouths.

Pointer in the mouth works good for key by key pushing too.

Likely in the mouth. You can see several shots where they write with a pen in their mouths. I think one of the cutest animations is when it's Applebloom doing that.

Unless they're a unicorn. That unicorn magic comes in handy for doing just about anything.

Yeah, she's obviously concentrating very hard to make sure she gets her notes right. So adorable!

Also, in Call of the Cutie, an artist is shown in front of an easel, with paintbrush in mouth.

Probably a picture of a cowboy hat, with white eyes and a bandana around his mouth, with two revolvers crossed in front of him, because I'm a gun nut and I love anything that has to do with the Wild West.

Ok, quick 20 minute draw-up of my pony.  Introducing...ScrewBall!  And yes, the exclamation point is part of her name and cutie mark. :D   She's based off of a quote someone once said describing me--"Kinda like Jokey Smurf, except less annoying but more dangerous."

And a close-up of her cutie mark.

I want to draw more, it's so much fun to create these!  I already have a couple more planned for myself.

I forget, you must not be from the south. It's ok, we can't all be perfect. :P

Spitfire: Kind hearted underneith a rowdy/rambunctious appearance. Prone to being fiesty, and can be a bit of a hot head at times. Is overall passionate about their feelings. Usually a reference for adolesences and typically females, but can go both genders and adults.

Wow...so after working on that design and the cutie mark, what do I find out?

In part 2 of Return of Harmony, there's a quick scene with a pink pony floating by doing the classic lip-finger burble that made me laugh hard.  Wondering who that pony was, I did some investigating...only to find out that her fanon name is Screw Ball.  And what cutie mark does she have on her flank?  A screw.  And a ball.

>:(  #@$!!!  >:(

Maybe I should make that my cutie mark...

Agreed. And you could spin this to your favor. You could say you're so awesome, that you single handedly (or would that be hoovedly?) came up with a character that matched on par with both what the writing team and the brony community at large created. :D

Okay. I had been wanting to make one of these for a while, but finally after some prodding by a friend, I fired up the pony generator and got to work. My first few ideas failed. I just couldn't find any colors I liked that also seemed more or less pony-appropriate. After working with my friend on some ideas, we settled on this:
(http://inlinethumb02.webshots.com/46465/2757638540103580271S425x425Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2757638540103580271uvnpWN)

Base idea was to do something blue and orange because I've always loved the combination. But we decided to tone down the orange so it was more earthy and less inyourfacebrightorange!

Anyhow, the cutie mark is a bit of a cop-out. It doesn't really reveal a talent or anything like that. It's just my target mark, which pretty much represents everything that is me. We were discussing what to pick, and decided this was probably the best option. Partially because it's just a symbol I've used for myself for several years now. And partially because nothing else I could come up with would really look alright with the color scheme used.

Rather than using the uploader in the pony generator, I saved it and threw it into paint.NET so I could put the target on myself.

The generous Sewlde over on FA just did a ponysona for me. Yay! I couldn't bring myself to do a pony generator version and this is so much better. :)

(https://d.facdn.net/art/sewlde/1334303188.sewlde_002.jpg) (http://www.furaffinity.net/full/7771555/)

The cutie mark is an open book with the mathematical symbol Contradiction on one page and Therefore (Implication/"It Follows That") on the next. It's supposed to be sort of reminiscent of this sort of thing (https://encrypted-tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRrWz0bgLAUvS4m4cwIyq9q0nIOnEa4-Rt4PW0nOwxvQREgNUMdtw)
I suppose juxtaposing those two symbols implies a proof by contradiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_absurdum) is happening on my flank. It's supposed to emphasize the contrast though not the cooperation of the two symbols. Anyway I really like it, it's a very meaningful cutie mark! And Sewlde did a great job :)

My ponysona is named Silver Quill (at least for the present unless it's already taken), a white Pegasus pony with a silver and white streaked mane and green eyes. Her cutie mark is an ink bottle and quill pen. She is an adventurer, an eccentric writer, and lover of old fashioned mysteries. She is a wanderer and writes of her travels. Her personality is something like a cross of Rainbow Dash's determination and Twilight Sparkle's nerdiness. Oh, and she's a big fan of Edgar Allan Pony. 8)

Actually the cutie mark is only representative of the pony's special talent. Not their personality, other interests, etc. so it's not that hard to decide if you already have a talent.

My ponysonna, Beaker Buck, has a cutie mark of an H2O molecule, with the hydrogen being a green and the two oxygens being red.  :)

Edit: Due to Beaker's personality, his cutie mark has been changed from a H2O molecule to a mushroom cloud.
Also, my actual me-pony's cutie mark is two tan cubes melting to form the smiling lower-half of a face. The cubes are
       prosthetic-grade gelatin. :3

On his upper thighs there are ripples, like waves, kind of like a depiction of a wave form as circles. That's significant as I like music (a lot).

I have thought of this. her cutie mark would be a string with a half black half white diamond on it and she would be a unicorn.name: Diamondcharm
my second an alicorn, her cutie mark would be a heart with three bubbles of purple toxin floating above it. :3 name: Toxicheart
Based off just me my cutiemark would be a open book with a sketchy drawing on it, maybe a sword or quill behind the book... name: Swordsketch? something to do with swords, anthros, traditional art, video games, or/and reading.... I think about this to much....
sorry for edit...     :-[   :)

Hmm... I have two fan characters, so they're different.

Sharo/Shattered Rose (Pegasus version) has the mark of a flower with three of its petals falling to the ground. Sharo herself is a dark-red Pegasus with a black mane, tail, and wings. She has green eyes.

Spearmint, on the other hand (Unicorn) has a mark of two spears crossed in front of a maple leaf. Spearmint is a mint-green colt with blue eyes and a white mane and tail.

Edit: I created another character. Lightning Flare has a mark of a lightning bolt and a purple quill crossed together.

Mine would have to be a paw print or something of that sort because I'm great with animals. (Mostly dogs.) Or something that has to do with writing, photography, music, or art because I'm good at those too. I should draw a pic of all five... need the practice on my ponies.

I just think that a Binary Code Cutie Mark would fit me so well... I know this post is... a... bit... old... but alas I just needed to add mine!
Game design has been around my life since I was 12 so I don't know as much as I want to but I am still learning and still pressing on!
