GIMP vs. Photoshop Elements
« on: January 17, 2012, 05:59:01 pm »
Hello everybody. I have been using photoshop elements for all of my digital drawings and am pretty happy with it, but a friend has recently told me that there is a free program called GIMP that works like the full version of photoshop, but it's free. Has anyone used both? And if so, which is better?

In short, you have a lot more tools to work with in GIMP. Since its a free program, I suggest you try it out yourself ;) Wouldn't hurt...

Gimp is like the Blender of the 2D rasterized world: its got a huge amount of power, but you have to work your way around the "interface" to access it.
I've been using artweaver (for use with tablet) and paint.net+lots of extensions (for other things) myself (as well as a few hand-programmed tools for very specific tasks.)

I sense that you question the validity of Gimp because it’s free…
Don’t be afraid of the word free, Gimp is a very trustworthy and reliable program to use.
Just make sure you get it from http://www.gimp.org (if you're using windows, the actual download is located at http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-win/files )

Also, as far as a comparison between the two goes, Gimp and Photoshop elements are not even really comparable, as Gimp is more on par with Photoshop CS4.
So unless you’re willing to flip the bill for Photoshop CS4 or CS5, Gimp would still be a major step up in capability for you.

I got GIMP and installed it. I really like it, but the Mac version (aside from issues it has with my current setup) uses X11 (a different windowing layer), which makes it a bit harder to navigate. I really like it, but I can only see myself using it when I need the advanced features, like when I'm done drawing, but I need a more powerful set of features to touch it up.

Gimp 2.7/2.8 apparently has gone a long way in simplifying the UI. Sadly, 2.7.5 crashes on startup for me >.>

And the latest release for Mac is 2.6 -.-
Apparently 2.8 won't work on Mac in its current state.

2.8 doesn't exist yet; 2.7 is basically the alpha/beta of 2.8.
