I don't usually make -all- the fur. I make the highlighted and shadowed furs, then color in the rest with a 'feather' brush so it varies in tones. If you do the areas that are in the light in a very light/bright color in a zigzag pattern, then do the same with a darker shade of the color the fur will be (or if you have Adobe PhotoDeluxe the same color will suffice, if you don't mind closing the pic and reopening to cause the shadow to become background and thus able to color on top of it...)
But, I use APD, not APS (adobe photodeluxe vs adobe photoshop) so it allows me that bit of freedom...

*Shrugs* Well to each their own...it takes me all of ten seconds to do what the best artist in the world can do in about four weeks of constant work on fur. Dont overlook advancements. Besides...you said you DIDNT like drawing it hair by hair. If thats the case take my sugguestion to heart.

And Mousira what are you talking about? I looked through your art and I never see hair aside from head hair on your figures. Maybe if you applied the techniques you seem to know so much about to your own art we could all see some examples. But as it stands I really dont see where you become an athority on technique having drawn for such a very short time.

Just because I don't do it to all my work doesn't mean I don't do it at all.. and as for a short time? I don't think so... I've been drawing for nearly 12 yrs. It's only the last 5 yrs that I've been drawing furry, but I've always drawn animals... If I could go back to Moncton and bug my old art teachers for all the animals I drew that they kept, I'd show you. But as I can't, people only have to take my word on it. *sighs*
In my opinion, the best way to do fur is to do it by hand. Pencil crayons and paints do fur much better than most art programs.
So, Midnight, don't always shoot down other people's ideas. Just because you've practiced more with photoshop and such DOESN'T mean that you're the master. Ok? I'm not angry, I just hate people that try to shoot other people's ideas down when they are only trying to help...

Mousira, thanks for sharing how YOU do fur. That is the type of help I think others are looking for. No matter what an artists uses for their medium, they have experience in THAT particular medium.

That is what I do. I tell folks from MY experiences what I use and how I used it. Whether or not I liked that particular medium or loved it etc. That is the only way anyone can really critique anothers work any way. From their own experiences.

I have been trying to do the fur with Prisma pencils and at times with my Oil Pastels. I don't like how they turn out with either medium. I'm still practicing though. I am working towards using acrylics. I think I will have better luck then. But, until I do, I will keep trying with the mediums I have at hand.

For computer fur? Well, I would suggest finding tutorials on the internet for the program(s) one wishes to create in and/or ask someone that has used that specific program before.

We can advise others all we want on how to improve on their works and skills. But, it is ultimately up to the individual artist to practice what best suits them.

I wish all the artists luck in what ever medium they choose to use! '<img'>

Go for it!

You are only limited by yourself so if you want to go farther, don't limit yourself and just go for it! '<img'>

the Starfox pic looks good Yiffboy, I am still working on the "Fur Texture" tutorial Page i'm planning to put up in my site, and hopes to get it up by the new year. I held a panel at CACE this spring on this very topic, and it went well. I use the textures filters, blur filters, Smudge tools, Bur & Dodge tools to create my fur texture in both PS6 & PS7. they can be accomplished by either using a pen tablet or mouse. with a little practice , the fur texture can be done reasonably quick. I find that 3D modelling tools help enormously. There's one called XSI that I've got that renders fur accurately. It's quite complicated to use, even for a 3D moddeler like me!
