Title: Sketches 1/24/05
Post by: Sumarra on June 10, 2003, 06:22:24 am
Here's a quick inked sketch I did for a friend of mine. He's the author of a funny furry webcomic, Badly Drawn Kitties.

Lucy is the main character and I couldn't resist drawing her after she had her make over.  (:

Not at all bad...I see where you are going and I love the direction. Might I sugguest making the heads of your figures a bit smaller though? It looks slightly out of proportion with the bodies. I dont mean in the comic style illustrations, obviously, as they are ment to look like that.

You know, I've heard that before and I've tried sizing them down but it seems too 'off' when I do. I don't know why because even I can see that the heads on my work are larger than life porportionately.

It's always a learning process though and I keep trying to find just the right ways of doing my art that makes me proud of it.  :)

Thanks for the feedback. Constructive critism is always welcome.  ;)

Another sketch I cooked up at 3 am is this:

Stylistic Dragon

I was pondering a unique car decal design for a dark blue car and this popped into my head.

Nice pieces, Sumarra!

"Lucy" looks a bit miffed at something/someone? :)

I like the idea you used for the "Stylistic Dragon"! I think that would make a great decal! You going to do some more in this style?

hehe, Lucy is often "miffed".  :p

I might rework the dragon until it's exactly how I want it but I doubt I would do much more in this style. But who knows. It's something to consider.

I've found that summer has been keeping me thoroughly distracted and utterly busy to the point that I haven't spent more than a couple of hours a month in my sketchbook. It kind-of sucks since I'm falling behind on commisions but I'd rather not force the muse. So I'm hoping it will return with the cooler weather.

I'm sure that once I'm at Conifur's Artist Alley for a few hours I'll be pumping quite a bit out onto paper.  ;)

This was just a little sketch I did while waiting for the fireworks to start at this year's Festival of Light. I never intended for it to get even this far and there are a number of things about angle, porportion, and irrengular lines that I don't like. But it's cute.

This little guy I cooked up while waiting for some things to scan:

Warning - light bondage.
Submission

I really like how his ears turned out but I think he's missing a toe. hehe.. oh well. ;)

"Shy Dragon"
I love how she looks. I do have a comment on the toes that are showing though. It seems they wouldn't be angled toward us since her knee is point at another direction. Just looks a bit off to me.

Are you going to color her?

"Submission"
He looks quite subdued and not in any pain. Just waiting for th next thing to happen?

As for his toe being missing, I don't think so. It could just be the angle and the toe is out of sight.

I am truly sorry I didn't see these before! I will have to check out the artists forums more closely from now on.

I was struggling with her front foot quite a bit. Probably redid it close to 10 times and finally gave up. It's just a sketch so I wasn't going to push it too much. But if I ever put her to canvas for color I'll take your suggestion and try to angle it in more. That's probably why I was struggling with it.

As for Submission, I was in a very sombre mood when I started it. That's why he seems tranquil. The overall idea behind it is he has willingly knelt in submission, giving himself over to the furson offscreen and is waiting for that furson to take control of his life, making him "whole" in doing so.

Not too long ago, a close friend of mine has left for the other side of the country and will be away until January. I realized after starting that pic that he was on my mind and probably the main inspiration behind the drawing. :\
We keep in touch each weeek though, so it's not too bad.

When you are having so much trouble with a part do what I do. I cover it up! (LOL) Put in some tall grass around the bottom of the tree and have it cover her feet and then you don't have to worry about it.

I did that with this piece when I had troubles with getting the feet just right and gave up but liked the sketch so I didn't want to quit working on it:
"Just a Glimpse" she sold at AC 2002.

Who will ever know that the end result wasn't truly intended from the beginning?  :D

In "Submission" that is the feeling I got looking at it.

Sorry to hear about your friend. That is one way to pass the time till they get back is to keep them forever in your heart and mind by putting them on paper where you can always look at them.  :)

I have used that trick a lot in the past - covering the troublesome part up. I haven't done it in a while though, forcing myself to overcome these challenges has helped me improve.. but I might bring it back for this one, hehe.

:D  I know what you mean. Some times you just have to face it, some things just DON'T want to work right!

True.. and then there's some things that do work right. Like this sketch ( notice I left out the footpaws.  :p  just kidding. I ran out of paper actually )

It's a revision of my sweetheart's furry counterpart. It's been two years since his first one and I've found him to be not like a gryphon at all. But -much- more akin to a skunk for it's odorous ways and like a lazy lion who just wants be served and waited upon paw and foot. So I've combined the two here in a handsome way... hey, I have to have some reason to stay with him, right? *smirks*

That's a cool pic, Sumarra! I never would have thought of combining those two but if the paw fits?  :D

Yeah, you might as well keep him about, who knows, you may draw some more of him!

hehe, maybe. Though I'm terrible at re-drawing characters... that's probably why I never do it.

This one I started... a while back. I can't remember. But it's not finished anyway and I am hoping to work on it tomorrow at the local art jam.

Tarot Reader

My friend HeartOfSilver and I were sketching together and we had spent some time talking about tarot and astrology and such when this one came to mind. It took nearly an hour before I could start drawing him because the mental image was so elusive. I was hoping to make his sleeved-sorta-vest-thing look like leather but I really don't know how yet. So I've held off until I can look at some pictures/art and see how others have done it.

If anyone can suggest a pic that would help me, I would be grateful  :)  *hopeful look*

... oh, and it's a bad scan... it wasn't inked so I had to mess around with the levels to darken the lines.

Thanks! :)  I'm not entirely sure yet if I will color it. I want to see where the muse takes me.

LOL Ok, it's good as it is but of course it's up to you where you're gonna take it.

well, the muse caught up with me yesturday morning and this is what happened:

'Try and take it from me'

Not really sure what kind of dog she is but she looks like a mix of Beagle, Afgan, and Collie? Your guess is as good as mine... she had her own ideas about how I should draw her.  ;)

**Edit: I uploaded a reworked copy under the same filename so comments are still welcome. (:

**Edit: And I have finished her in color. You can see her here: Clicky!

Ooops! I put a sketch post into the wrong section. This is what I posted on Oct. 21, 2004:

Quote

A sudden compulsion came over me a few nights ago and I started a new sketch for an old character. His name is Sethrech K'rath. I conjured him up for a furry D&D game a long time ago and gave him a whole history and everything. He was fun to play, mostly fighter and part Barbarian made the game really interesting.

Sethrech K'rath

So there he is in all his muscley glory with his trusty warhammer, DeathBlight, behind him on the wall above his old mercenary shield.

I may make a few changes still but feedback is welcome.  :)

And now I've cleaned up this sketch into line-art. You can view it here:

Since coming back from FC I've had the bug and I cooked this one up between the con and last week:

All Yours (Rated G)

It's a pic of my good friend and mentor, Shadarack Tailroam and his mate. I'm hoping this will become an art trade with him.  :)  (:
