Due to the fact that updating the new server is taking so much more time and work than planned and in consideration to the users of Furtopia who need to use their web sites I went ahead and paid out of pocket to have the old server kept in service for another month at $200 extra over our new server costs.  I don't normally ask but if you have been planning to make a donation NOW would be a very good time.  I am very stressed in finances.  My paypal e-mail is fuzzydog<at>whiteshepherd.net

Long story short what happened was two major problems.  First we have to convert every Furtopia user into it's own Linux user and this has been very time consuming.  Second there has been problems with one of the routers to the point for the last two weeks I have been working 6+ hours a day on it and Furtopia.  I even took a week off of work to do this.  Crazy thing is I feel like I'm within 1-2 days of finishing the new server.  However it has been so long that it has run into something else important I CAN'T put off, my Vision Quest.  My adoptive mother is Native American Lokota and it's been planed that this weekend I will fast up on the hill on my Vision Quest.  I had planned to have Furtopia finished a week ago but best laid plans of mice and dogs...  So tonight I need to stop for a bit.  I've secured the old server and FTP is back on-line.  When the new server finishes we'll transfer then.

Caring and hugs to everyone who makes this place the wonderful home it has become!  WhiteShepherd

*hugs WS really tight*

Man, we say it every time, and we mean it every time: thank you so much for all the work you do to make Furtopia a better place.
Mm yeah I forgot to mention that.
I personally say thanks, as this is a place where i can be myself.
I can find quite a decent amount of art, topic , music ETC

And i think you have really done a good job.
Goodluck finishing the upgrade.
You deserve a big pat on the back

Quamer THANK YOU!  *hugs* If it wasn't for your time helping me on the server we wouldn't be near this close to being finished.

I was just curious, thanks for getting things up and running though. <3
I appreciate the hard work you and your staff are putting into this upgrade as well as the forums themselves.

Ok we've made a lot of tweaks and changes.  I plan to take the FTP off-line tonight to transfer files to the new server.  I expect things to go smoother.  ;)  Downtime for FTP is estimated at 48 hrs but less is hoped for as we now have working all three connections adding up to 30Mbs.

We are transferring files now.  Here is a sneak peak of one of the new beta options.  In the past the indexer used to open a picture in a new window.  That option is still available but the default now opens in a slideshow window. http://whiteshepherd.furtopia.org/pictures/Carter_Caves_2007/

cool. I do have a question though. If we decide to change it back to the old set up how would that be done?
I use my site to host images when I show them off and the set-up like this won't allow that I don't believe.

Mazz: I will keep the old indexer so others can switch back to it with a .htaccess file.  However the new indexer is compatible with direct linking.  There are two ways to do this.  First you can right click on a picture and under "properties" it will show the address for remote linking.  Second to note in the indexer demo the added link: "original file" which is a direct link itself.

As far as features to be added.  It has also been decided that users from their control panel will have the option to enable a Furtopia web e-mail address (user@furtopia.net).  Also if a user hosts their own domain name at Furtopia they can opt to host their web mail to their hosted domain.

There will be a change in the way bandwidth to web pages is handed out.  This has been a long decision coming in an attempt to curb abuse and save bandwidth for legitimate users.  The reason Furtopia hosts web pages is to offer a "free" and stable web site to artists who cannot often afford good hosting.  Unlike a gallery only service Furtopia lets an artist completely control the look of THEIR web site to the public as they can share their artwork with the world.  Most artwork is jpg/gif/txt/doc/php/html and similar small files.  As in the past all files on a artists website WILL remain downloadable from the Furtopia web server.  But these mentioned files types will now take priority in bandwidth over other files (especially very large ones).  The server will also check on the fly that these files are real to their extension (jpg/doc/etc) so a user renaming say a zip file to .txt or .jpg will still take second class priority and a slower download. This action is a move to cut abuse and save more resources for the legitimate artists and use of the service. :)

It's a LOT of stuff and improvements and a lot of hours to work.  But it's all coming together bit by bit. :)

Ok the transfer has started.  It's 4AM and this dog is going to crash for some rest.  I'll resume in the morning.  Over the comming week I will be bringing services online.  Here is my priority so far:

Get e-mail online, Restore DNS, add TLDs, check and fix permission issues, restore mysql backups, restore IRC bots, restore (recompile) missing indexer function links, add user control panel, add web mail.

Aside from these issues if you notice something wrong send me a PM so I can look into it.  Here we go!

Ok all member Top Level Domains (*.com, *.net,*,org, etc) have been restored as well as furtopia domains ( user.furtopia.org ).  Thousands of accounts were converted so if you have a website check your web address and FTP to make sure it is working properly.  If not PM me ASAP so I can fix the issue quickly.

More work to do but so far the new server is proving MUCH faster and responsive then the old one! :)

I can acess my FTP no problem, it's nice an fast. My site itself seems to be working fine (from fallenangel.furtopia.org). Any offsite linked images (like art I post in my LiveJournal) are broken, however.

Are the indexer/directory pages back up yet, or is that in the next batch of things to be done?

Wow..  I've been making adjustments and recoding the indexer since yesterday as I got reports of errors to make it compatible going from a single user system to a multi-user system (Linux).  Everything from thumbnail creation to getting the correct paths.  During this two day process of debugging I changed permissions on the top web folder.  I did not realize it blocked access to sites bellow it for three hours. *doe!!*

Ok did a LOT of debugging on the indexer and code addition to the indexer.  It should work for everyone now.  The indexer should load fast.  However one thing do to if a web site has a corrupted image the indexer can hang on the image for 15 seconds trying to fix it before moving on to other images.  So if the indexer hangs on a image it can't create a thumbnail for you should try and replace/re upload it with a good image.

Keep the reports coming!  I need to know if something is not working.  Next on my list to get working is the new MYSQL.

I also again want to give a big thanks to Quamer who has been helping me lots with the setup of servers.  If it wasn't for his help this project would of never come off the ground!
