While I can't say what the laws are now in Florida (tho I will research them tonight and tomarrow and see what I can find) in Virginia it depends on the species. I do know that about ten years ago Florida didn't require a permit to own a wild animal, only that the pens met very minimal standards in size and design.
A wieghtlifter that lives about an hour from me has a tiger he rescued. Va requires a double walled cage, with the walls far enough apart to maintain the area in between (5 feet is the average) and a roof over the cage for any species deemed agressive. There must be locking doors on both sections with a hallway between the doors so that if the animal rushes past you it can't get free. The floor must be either concrete or lined with steel fencing to prevent the animal from digging it's way out.
The enclosure must be inspected and I believe the inspection is nessecary to get your wildlife permit for ownership. When I was offered the pure wolves years ago you were also required to own at least two acres of land to isolate the inclosure. Building one of these pens is a couple of grand, but just a small part of the expence to guaranty the safety of the animal.

I don't mean this the wrong way Basheba but a tiger or any large wild animal shouldn't be and can't be kept in a house. A large animal, even a dog, can claw thru the wall of a house in minutes. I personaly know of two bassett hounds that clawed thru the walls of a townhouse and got out.
A woman in Maryland bought a blackmarket Tundra wolf 3 years ago and left it in her home. Buy the time it was 2 years old it had done more than $20,000 in damage. At two years old a wolf is still a puppy and has a little more intellegence than a dog of the same age. They reach full maturity around 3 years of age, at that age they are very intellegent. A tiger or any other large predator has a very similar maturity rate.
My large male wolfer has bit thru 3/16" steel cable and twisted the wire straight in a chain link fence, half inch drywall and vinyl siding wouldn't even slow him down. If 95lbs of wolfer can do that think what a 600lb tiger can do.

Poor tiger.  '<img'>  I remember seeing a clip on the news with a reporter talking to its owner, and he was in tears. But, I can't say I blame the officer that shot the tiger either. If a tiger lunged at you and all you had was a shotgun and enough time to react, what choice would you make?

I know still, that instead of a firearms at all, just tranquilizers large enough to put an elephant out cold in a second flat should have been used. At least that wouldn't have killed the tiger. But in the longrun, I'm completely against the private ownership of large exotic animals anyways.

Some good news?

http://www.thenownewspaper.com/issues03/094203/news/094203nn2.html

Yes, that is a Serval cat. What had happened (from memory) was an exotic pet breeder sold this woman the cat. The breeder had done background checks on the lady before letting the cat go, but made a mistake. The woman broke up with her boyfriend shortly afterward and went to live in her car with the cat. Last I heard, she didn't get the cat back, and they were deliberating on whether or not the breeder would get the cat back either.

http://www.langleyadvance.com/issues04/044104/news/044104nn3.html

The macaw was actually found walking down the side of a road... and the area wasn't unknown for wildlife on four legs...

Anyway, I thought it'd be nice to post some good news about lost beings here. '<img'>

IMHO exotic cats should NEVER be kept outside certified zoos. If a 'pet' escapes, 9/10 it gets killed. The worst was when I heard about Amur leopards that escaped and were killed...and those are really rare cats  '' Not to mention the severe inbreeding and sometimes cruelty that happens to exotics  ':dead:'

Rats, you scooped me...this happened in Loxahatchee, Florida which is near Palm Beach.  As I understand it, Florida laws do not now permit keeping exotic animals, but this owner was exempt as he had started keeping exotics before the law was enacted.  Once again, a fur pays for human stupidity and inconsideration... ''

P.S.--Caligula also made his horse a senator.  Come to think of it, though, an equine might be a distinct improvement over some of the fools now in the senate!   '<img'>

I dunno, seems like they would always only vote "neigh" on everything.  '<img'>

Ok, sorry for the bad joke, it is very sad what happened in my own state of Florida.  I saw a special a while ago on exotic pets that focused on tigers, and it's just AMAZING what people think they can get away with.  I guess some do it out of their "love" for animals, but there are much better ways to show you love tigers than to take one home as a pet. This is indeed a sad ending to the story of his escape. IMHO this was a case of poor handling (not that the animal should have been in the care it was in) .

I feel sorry for the cat. I know it's easy to say afterwards, especially when you weren't there, but I have the feeling that capturing escaped animals alive isn't prioritized...

When talking about keeping wild animals: I would have loved to have a large cat of some sort living with me, but atlest i'm sane enough to understand that it wouldn't be good for the cat, and it would be dangerous for me and the people around me (might aswell just call it suicide).

I am deeply saddened at this senseless loss.

Here are some excerpts from a news report and a link to the report if you would like to read more.

Sipek says he developed his affection for big cats after one pulled him from a fire on a set more than 30 years ago, saving his life, and he promised then he would always take care of such animals if he recovered.

Wildlife officials had said they did not believe the declawed pet would attack. He was never taught to hunt, and had never killed anything or lived in the wild. However, he did bite a woman working inside his cage two years ago, severely injuring her.

Unfortunately, things like this happen. It was sad that such action had to be taken against the tiger, even if they are "tamed" they still have instincts. In this case, the tiger probably felt threatened.
Not all captive animals are kept as pets. Sometimes, animals are rescued from someone who would mistreat them as "pets" and zoos don't always have room. It's hard to rehab once captive animals with animals that are captive from the wild, especially when they've been declawed or something along the lines of that. So they go to someone who is trained to handle them fosters them for rehab. Sometimes, they can't be taken to live at zoos because they have never had a proper habitat or socialization to other animals their type. \
I foster and aquatic turtle and unfortunately, we found we can't reintroduce him to a wildlife habitat. He was diseased when we got him, and we took care of him and his disease is gone, but he's very small and his develpment is weak. He has good socialization skills however, it still hasn't had much of an effect on his development.
It's a sad thing that the tiger was killed, possibly because of some neglect because of the owner. I hope it doesn't reflect badly though, on those who foster or rescue wild animals.

I'm a bit curious; Do the florida police deal with this sort of thing often? It doesn't sound like they knew how to deal with a situation like that.

Yeah exotic/wild animals should only be kept in zoos. Not by individuals outside of zoos. The speed at which a wild animal can hurt someone even acidentally is fast enough that shooting with powerful gun just makes more sense then with dart gun. Sure ideal circumstances, NO one reaL close, animal staying still, ect a dart gun may work fine.

Thinks all states should have laws against keeping any wild animal that eats meat. Except in zoos or proper santuary for wild animals.
Enjoy living.

Sorta like how Sigmund and Roy keep on breeding white tigers and white lions. They're just asking for more and more trouble, since inbred big cats either look messed up (like royal families) or have nasty tempers... (like royal families)... ':p'

I was a bit disturbed at the fact they did that myself. However, the tiger had a history of attacking some woman, which the cops knew....and that put them on edge.

At first it was "The tiger made a -movment and the oficer took it as a threat and delt with it." and then it turned to "The tiger was attacking an officer and he had no other choice but to put it down."...no...im no expert on cop to tiger relations, but I smell some BS...they are Florida cops though...if I remember correctly...and they arent exactly known for their brains or their public service.

I saw about the attack on the woman.. she admits the attack was her fault. that she went into the tigers cage and began (one report says cleaning one painting) and the tiger attacked. It could have been worse since she did not close the cage door thinking the tiger was not in the cage at the time.
