Title: whats an easier instrument to learn to play?
Post by: nevwyn on June 16, 2003, 04:07:45 pm
I've been wanting to learn how to play a musical instrament for an eternity, but I can never work up the nerve to buy one.

I love music played on a fiddle/violin or the pipes but I've priced bagpipes a few months back and if I had that kind of cash laying around I've a car.

I'd prefer to learn something that doesn't interfere with my ability to sing as I love to do that. But its not that important. I wish I had put effort into learning how to play a guitar those many years ago. Course at the time I was trying to learn it upside down as I'm left handed but I just didn't put the effort into it at then time.

Man, I'd get a keyboard, if I were you.

Cute icon, btw.

I was thinking the exact same thing. You can play a keyboard with either of your hands, or you could play with both!  :)

So why not pick up a left handed guitar and learn how to play.

*Chuckles* How about you find something that is astetic to YOU. I find the ease of music always comes from the love of the instrument and not upon sugguestions from others personal favorites *Wink* Though the keyboard?synth is still the best...lets see any other musical TOY compair with a full orchestra in one button.

I use my left hand for everything except one thing; I play guitar right handed.  It was the way I was trained, and now I find it quite natural.  My picking isn't as fast as some, but I'm very good at stuff that takes finesse with my fretting hand like bends.

Keyboards and guitar are usually considered the easiest to pick up.  Bass is a good instrument also.

You mentioned you couldn't afford a left handed guitar.  I was in a shop Sunday where they had a left handed strat on sale for less than $200.00.  Doesn't have great pickups, but definitely a playable guitar.  Electric guitar prices have plummetted since the market has been flooded by decent, low cost guitars from Korea.

If you decide to get a guitar and want to try guitar and want equipment advice, send me an email.  If you go the keyboard route, I'm sure others on here will steer you towards something decent in your price range.

Just remember, it's suppose to be fun.

Ohhh YEAH I forgot about bass.   ..I wanna get into that, myself.  Folks seem to pick that up fairly easy as well.  Especially if you have a good ear for music, you should do alright.

So yeah... pick up some bass!
..or a General MIDI compatable keyboard.  There are a ton of progs out on the web that can teach you how to play piano through MIDI.  And these days, you can find a more than decent one for right around $100.

..and you know, it's interesting that left-handed instruments are so rare, especially when you consider that most creative people...artists and musicians.... are lefties!  (except me)

Bass...? In compairison to the difficulty of playing a bass, you should try a jews-harp. *Twang twang twang* And if your looking for an instrument, Bass is merely backup sound much like the ambient droning of a hive of bees rythmicaly slaped against a wall. I sugguest a lead guitar if you decide to go into the string & pluck family...preferably an electric classic style so you at least can have some diversity in your music.

Simply put, guitar is over played, over rated, and most people spend their time modeling after other peoples music just to learn how to play and mess up their fingers. Ugh, uncomfortable, yes, but easy enough to pick up once you learn riffs and cords. Dont expect Mozart from it though.

Another handy set of tools, all be it more expensive, are the drums. You could probably see over fifty or so various sorts of them in a local music store. From hand drums to electric drums..they have it all AND can play music now as well as keep rythem. Very awsome.

BTW did you pick something yet?

I love those! Vermont has a little store by a peace-frog outlet called crystal moon or something...local pagan shop. They had sets of pans there that blew my mind...they were large AND beautifuly tuned...That would be something to pick up...and maybe aquire over good graces.

yeah we have a few shops like that around the area, I know for a fact that I can get a set in the next town over just not sure the price.

on the plus side I found a set of bagpipes called kitchen pipes that are like a quarter of the price of the huge pipes so that's an option too. woot! :D
