Tails at Renaissance Fair

So I went to the Renaissance Fair in San Luis Obispo, CA yesterday and I saw several people sporting small fox tails as part of their whole Renaissance period costume. Only my girlfriend was courageous enough to ask one lady what it was about. The lady said she didn't know what it was about or whether there was any significance to the Renaissance time. She just liked wearing it. My girlfriend and I wondered if they were furs, but we didn't ask anyone that directly. There were also several venders selling the tails. I also saw a guy wearing a horse tail several years ago at a fair in Oklahoma.  

So does anyone know what the tails are about or if they have any relation to the Renaissance period? Of course at least some of them might be furs.

My girlfriend and I thought about wearing horse costumes, but we weren't sure if it would've been a good idea. There probably wasn't a place to suit up and it was too hot.

I thought about wearing my homemade tail to the Minnesota RenFest, but looking at it again I find it a pretty sorry specimen.  I'll probably buy the biggest fox tail I can up there and wear it around.

So, yes, I plan on it!

Personally, I haven't even been to a renfaire in ages and not sure if I'd wear my tail or not.  But I know of several furs that have done so.  As to why, your guess is as good as mine.  I think I saw someone mention it being because you already see a lot of people in period costumes, so it's not as out of place as in the general public.

renfaire tail wearers of confusing... Most are NOT furs. I dont know why they do it tho. I met a girl wearing a horse tail just like mine.. I asked her, nope, not a fur. Safest bet there, let them come ask you.

The ren Fairs make a lot of money off selling genuine fox tails. People wear them at the ren fair because they want everyone to know they got it and want to be, "oh look what i got here, ain't it cool."
When they get home they'll hang it somewhere and it will proceed to collect dust.
Not a furry thing for the majority.

I have a tail from the ren fest and wear it somewhat frequently. Me and my tail can be seen here. I think I have shown this picture before, but whatever. I don't have many pictures of myself.

I would really like to get a larger, synthetic tail eventually. The only thing is that I doubt I can find one with fur as soft. '> Also, most of the tails I have seen are too red and don't look very realistic... I wouldn't mind my tail being a little redder, but I don't like the ones that are just one solid bright red color.

I know i'll be wearing mine when I go next year. Missed it this year cause I was in Japan.

But of all the times i've ever been to the fair, i've never seen anyone in anything but a fox or a wolf tail. And even THAT is rare.

Generally not furries, honestly. There's alot of people who wear tails at my local ren faire (and I wear my own, as well). It's just something cute to add to ones costume. It's mostly dyed and tanned fox tails and the long 'horse' tails that I see.

Hehehe, I saw a bunch of poeple wearing tails at a faire a while back. I even bought one of the real raccoon tails- when it's not raining, and my cat's not around, I hang it from my walking stick. Most of the people wearing them had raccoon tails, and they looked somehwat silly as they were proportionately way too small!

Ren fairs make my stomach turn, and seeing thouse wearing tails even more. The vendors that sell the tails sell REAL!!!!! tails. And a fox doesnt grow its tail back. So thanks to all who buy and show off you brand new dead animal..

sorry if I seem a little angry but I don't aprove with the hunting of animal nor the selling of their skin, no matter what. I can care less if it was the common of thouse times. I still don't approve.

There is an all female S C A * household around the Tacoma Wa. area That uses small , 14"to 20" black furry tails in conjunction with their period style costumes as an identifier for their members. I didnt really look to see if they were real or fake fur no reason not to use fake fur ,Cheaper , More durable , dosent matter if it gets wet. (Rains a lot Here.)

It has nothing to do with furries or historical accuracy, and everything to do with tourists who will buy anything. People like to add them to costumes, or take them home and hang them on the wall. Anything goes at a Ren faire, and I honestly don't think a fursuiter would stand out too much.

I agree. No one should harvest real fox tails. It's madness. The tails we saw looked synthetic, but I wasn't sure.

Most sold at the fair here are authentic.

Lets keep this on topic please and not debate on if killing animals for their fur is good or bad.

So, I know this thread is a bit old but I wanted to clear something up. People that wear tails at fair are usually wearing them under the pretext of denoting promiscuity, meaning that the more tails they wear, the looser they are. Others at fair wear tails as what are called "flea furs" a belief the fleas carrying the black plague would bite the tail instead of the person wearing the tail. There are people there that wear tails because they think it's cute or possibly because they're furs but most commonly it's for the historical aspect. but that really only applies to people dressed in period garb.
