Humans tend to be attracted to infants of most all species due to their large
eyes, small muzzles and noses, and large for their size heads. It's part of how
we are hard wired mentally. To care for and protect our young. Almost all
animals we think of as adorable or cute have similar attributes .
It's likely why some people like Bulldogs over dogs that have long large muzzles. I
know my father preferred short muzzled dogs. House cats have short faces, and
large eyes. Being nocturnal by nature.
Rabbits and other prey animals have large eyes, and less protruding muzzles. Of
course being soft of fur and quiet is desirable to some.
Many reptiles are smooth and soft of skin with short rounded muzzles. They
require a understanding owner to give them the attention they need.
Birds generally love attention as any social beast. Sadly they like many other
creatures are hard if not impossible to house break. No natural wish to go in
any particular place. So some put diapers on birds that they take with them.
Fish on the other hand/fin need an aquatic enviroment, so we mostly have to look
at them or watch their antics when fed or tank tapping. Not easy to pet if at all.
Many fish do have large eyes. It's been said eyes evolved in water, and most fish
can see better than humans.
I imagine reasons for choice of pets is as diverse as we as humans are. What ever
suits our way of thinking about other creatures, and how they interact with us.
Many of us follow our friends and those wee admire when we choose our animal
friends. Perhaps a story we enjoyed as a child gave the desire for one.
I imagine many German sheperds were sold when the show "Rin Tin Tin aired.
Collies as well when the show "Lassie" aired..
