furtopia.org WinAmp skin
« on: July 22, 2004, 10:37:45 pm »
Well, you may (or may not) remember that I made a furtopia.org based WinAmp classic skin a few months ago (before my internet connection got nuked).

And since there have been no "Cease and Desist" orders against it (although equally there was only a very small interest in it in the first place). Here is the new link to the updated skin in case anybody wants it.

*blows dust off of a plaque in a very dramatic fashion*
http://www.geocities.com/ilesead/stuff/furtopia.html

I mainly just fixed a couple of things that annoyed me (because annoying stuff is annoying), the overall look is pretty much the same.

And if you're not interested in that, I wrote this to amuse you

Year 2085, Ancient Halls of Redmond, USA
"Hey guys," Cyrin called out as he knelt down beside a small hole in the wall, "I think I've found it."
The halls of the ancient building echoed as Cyrin's fellow furrs rushed down the metallic corridors towards him.
"Where is it?" Druscor asked as he rushed into the room.
"There," Cyrin said as he pointed down to the now enlargened hole, beyond which was an ancient computer terminal.
"Excellent," Druscor said as he strode over to the hole and knelt in front of the terminal.
The terminal made a whirring sound as it booted, and the strange beep it let off echoed throughout the complex.
"POWER ON SELF TEST COMPLETED, NOW BOOTING FROM OPERATING SYSTEM," the computer spoke out as it booted.
"Ahh, the ancient POST test," Druscor nodded as he waited for the programs to load.
Suddenly, the room went dark except for the dull blue glow of the monitor, which read: -

There has been a fatal exception error, your computer will now shut down.

"DAMN YOU *********," Druscor cried out, "DAMN YOU!!!!!!"
"There there, Druss, we all know that ********* destroyed civilisation, but we'll all be okay."

THE END

This is the first I have heard of this.  It looks nice but the artwork was done by Benjamin.  Did you ask his permission?  As it is also furtopia's home page art I would think White Shepherd should be consulted also.

Here is a link to the original thread started on March 22nd (it took a while to track down, it's on page 23 or so).

And did you read the page on my website, or did you just look at the picture, because all you're questions are answered. But I'll repeat what's on my website (and in the readme.txt file)

Quote
The background images are © the furrs at furtopia.org
probably Benjamin (it is his art after all)
and used without permission (although they are aware that I did this)
(otherwise I would of called it "Starry Night" or something)

Comments, copyright infringement notices or whatever:
jamius@mad.scientist.com

It's just that nobody ever said I could, or couldn't do it. I was just bored and did it, credited Benjamin for his art and that's it (and it took me a while to make, and I kept bumping the thread back to the top whenever I updated it).

So everyone is (or was at the time) well aware of this and didn't stop it. Although if I was to recieve a "Cease and Desist Order" or a "Copyright Infringement Notice" from Benjamin, White Shepherd, Kada-Ru or any other furtopia.org staff, I would take it down ASAP.

So if any of the copyright holders want me to stop, they can tell me so, because they are aware of what I did, but never gave an official yes or no. Although legally you are correct I should have waited for an approval from all first parties.

But then, so should everybody who writes any sort of fanfiction, or draws fanart. They are all in breach of copyright law as well (which is why places like VCL do not want  any fanart or fanfiction in their archives).

-----

In conclusion, yes, I am in breach of copyright law, but the copyright holders are aware, have been credited and have not asked me to stop distribution (geez, I just go on and on and on don't I?)

Thankyou...

Kasarn, I know that many artists have concerns over how their works are used.

Personally I would PM/e-mail concerned individuals asking specifically for permission.  That way you have written permission in your possession and you state that you have the permission on the web page.

This does 2 things, first it lets other artists know that you respect their rights and second it gives a free advertisment for the artist.

Anyway, I know posts are always kind of cold and hard to read the feelings behind the 1's and 0's, so I just want to let you know I am not angry or attempting to attack you.  We're cool.

*hugs*

Edit: Actually I am also hoping Benjamin will read this and give a nod of approval so I will feel comnfortable using the skin.

Heh, I remember this. Neat stuff. So it's more complete now, eh? I'll have to try it out when I get back home.

Yes! A skin that works (and I have winamp5).

Oh and I put them side by side. That way the grass looks right.

I do remember something awhile back about this topic. I love how it turned out. I will copy this link and put it to the staff. All staff will see it there.

I want to use it on my winamp. (smiles)

Pretty.
Oh, faint memory trickles, that is all; like a stream that rustles forgotten leaves and lost paths.

I agree with the others that you should have asked permission from WhiteShepherd and myself regarding the use of these graphics, but I'm alright with it's use. You did a good job on making the skin. Thing is, I could have had a cow and then poop all over your head for this, and would have every right to. S'best to cover one's butt in the first place when it comes to copyright images and whatnot.
I've been using this skin, even though my Winamp is a more recent version. Fortunately, it supports the classic skin styles.
I'm happy to see my artwork all over a major site now, as well as popular t-shirts... and now a Winamp skin. '<img'>
Maybe we could host it on Furtopia somewhere here, so it doesn't get lost to the bandwidth caps that are a part of life over on GeoShitties...

Furtopia is a webhost, so I'm sure it'll be fine to move whatever site over here as long as it's furry.

Okay, now I've got to change it to say that you're okay with it... Done.
There was just other stuff happening at the time (I don't want to whinge about it, so I won't), and I lost my net connection, and as of today, I've had it back for 6 days.
Anyway, I'm glad you're cool with it, as I would hate to have to clean liger poop off (that stuff doesn't come out of your fur for ages... or so I'm told) '<img'>
And if somebody wants to put it on furtopia, that's cool too (I'm too self-conscious to use anything beyond geocities, where I can hide all my crappiness without anybody seeing it).
