Title: Watching animated movies in theater as adult?
Post by: Jade Sinapu on February 16, 2018, 10:07:51 pm
I wasn't sure where to start this post. If this post is better in a different place, lets move it there.

I was feeling rather down, and got an idea, I would go to them movies!  I got real excited about the idea and it got me through the horrible week at work.
I was so proud of myself for "getting out" more and dealing with depression.  I felt it would help my situation improve some if I made an effort.

So it was that I started discussing with a few people that I wanted to watch an animated movie at the theater.  I was excited, as I haven't been to the movies in 10 years! But then it happened...

They said I had better bring someone with me, or I would be thought of as a "weirdo" for watching a "kids movie" as a lone guy.  I was even warned that I could be arrested.  Now I am made to feel very bad about the whole idea of watching a movie because I wanted to see it.  Many things I do in life alone, and it almost never bothers me.  Now I find I am questioning myself more.

I am a single guy, and people can tell my age by looking at me, so I am starting to worry that people will think I am indeed a weirdo.
When I am down and depressed, sometimes the only things that bring me joy are the simple, and fun, and sort of cute or odd things in life.  Comics, cartoons, certain books, etc...

So I do intend on watching a movie alone at the theater.
(I do normally watch those things at home by myself, but this time I wanted to see it there on the big screen)
I NOW expect social pressure to NOT be there, whereas before I was totally cool with going.

My question
Is it wrong, inappropriate, too weird to go watch an animated PG/PG13  "kids" movie alone as a guy?
Why am I made to feel bad for being myself?
Thoughts or experiences?

It's not weird. I go see animated films by myself in theaters all the time. Nobody cares and nobody will give you looks. I saw Coco and there were a bunch of kids and parents in the theater. Nobody looked at me. Nobody cared.

What you should do is talk to the manager of the theater about your interaction with the employee.

Maybe the care bears movie  ;)

Just kidding , there noting wrong. Personally I stooped   going to the theaters and wait to stream them or  use Red Box.
I generally only watch G to to some  PG-13. Only rare circumstance I watch an R rated movie (no sexual immorality and excessive violence for me)

I go to movies and restaurants alone. Nothing wrong with that, or with you.

Over here, it's not an issue. No one makes a fuss about it, no one cares. Lots of people go and see films, including animated ones, alone.

I appreciate the input from all of you!  Its reassuring to hear that I am not the only one who still likes to have fun in their own way.
While I had told myself I would go anyway, reading other peoples thoughts has made me sure I am going now.  Time to be myself!

I guess the person (family member actually) who was suggesting to me that it was strange for me to go , for one, does not like animated movies.  Secondly, they are not a furry nor know what it is, and third, maybe they thought they were protecting me.  lastly, my family member is a teacher of young kids.
And the irony of her comments to me is that she often times acts more childlike than I ever do!  And she works directly with kids!  But she is a woman, and I wonder if this is the key of the perceived "strangeness" of a guy liking to be happy watching an animated movie alone.  "Hes a guy, gee lets be down on him for being born that way."  The whole idea, wither real or perceived, is so crazy.  It feels like discrimination of some sort.  I don't care if a guy or gal likes things that are different.

Loc, so you are saying that over there, its not a creepy thing for people to watch alone?  Interesting that a different country can see things so differently.
It is funny, when at the movies, I don't talk much at all, and often don't interact with people during the film.  Maybe after, I talk about it, or chat before it starts.  But once the movie starts, it has my attention.  So I never saw it as a super social thing anyway.

I think I identify with what you said Iara.
I have always been rather independent, maybe to a fault a few times since there are times we all need interaction with others.  But often due to my job and all, I find myself eating alone, and its usually not a big deal to me.  I only sometimes feel lonely, but I never feel totally alone, since I believe in things that make me think I am not alone spiritually. I never thought there was anything wrong with me until I was made to think so.

How can it be that someones words can hurt so deep and make you turn your world upside down in 5 minutes?
I fear that society is so on edge where kids are concerned, that people have forgotten the word FUN.  I guess also that I am not like many people in that I do not see a hard and fast age limit to honest, clean fun.  And I don't know of a law that restricts age against me.  The age limits are for youngsters to not watch R movies etc... not to keep adults from watching "kids" movies.

Acton, I might just watch Care Bears, but yeah, that's one for home viewing.   :-[ Hey, silly things, simple things, and fun cute things can make us all feel better at times.
Shim, I have not seen Coco, maybe I should add that to the list!
At this time in my life, the way its been going, I need to be happy or its not going to be good for me.  So I will go and have fun!
And if I  do indeed get made to feel bad about being there, then I will probably not go again, and just stay home, again...

I am glad I asked for info!
Thanks!

It may be a cultural difference. Movies are still seen as more of a group activity, especially among teenagers, but it isn't unusual at all to see people buying tickets and entering the theatre alone. Several of my close friends love films, and will go and see them alone as a preference. One of them is a large, burly man with long hair and a beard to mid-chest. He is intimidating looking, but he will cheerfully amble into a cinema alone to watch happy, fluffy films, animations, or rom-coms. And no one will give him a second glance, because he gives off an air of not caring, being comfortable and happy. As that is the best part; when it comes to films, over here, no one cares what anyone else is doing as long as you are not inconveniencing them. The vast majority of people wouldn't even notice that someone is seeing a film alone, let alone care about it. And if they do notice or care, it will be for all of five seconds and then they will forget.

Especially as there are now a lot of adults who grew up with animated films, who still enjoy them. Animation isn't seen as solely a thing for children any more. My partner's parents watch more animated films as nearly-retired adults than I ever did as a child.

So yeah: Even if people do care, so what? Are they people you will ever even see again? Almost certainly not. So why should you worry what they think of you for a minute or two? And you will not be arrested for watching a film alone, peacefully, not bothering people or being inappropriate. That is just stupid that someone even suggested that.

Nothing wrong with going alone. I always go with a friend or dad because I like to share the experience.

Never had that problem. By far most people think it's as normal as having a dog! And even when people think it's strange, they never care enough for it to bother them whilst watching. It's also only at kid's movies, if you're going to a movie rated 12+ all strangeness is just gone, animated or not. I don't know how big the cultural differences are between us, but where you live there should be a bunch of people who go to movies alone as well.

Also, no, you won't be arrested. People can call the police all they like, but they have something much better to do than check in on someone watching a children's movie in public. I'd highly question what the police is doing if they don't!

Well, I can say I had a good time!  I am glad I went!  And I wouldn't have if it weren't for people here in Furtopia.

Peter Rabbit was a blast, and what would you know, sitting right behind me, three people (one of which was wearing bunny rabbit ears),  :orbunny: and they were older than I!
Ha!  If I had only known that it was going to be that way, I would have joined in on their fun!  As they left, one turned around and complimented me about my T-shirt, with an anthro-kangaroo on it.  We both suspected we were of the same mind set ... or of the same fur perhaps.  Too bad I didn't have time to stick around to talk more.

And as for Paddington 2, well, that was a good one indeed!  There is even a scene or two which contains what could loosely be considered a fursuit.
Everyone in the theater was laughing and being themselves.  I was also not the only odd ball there either!  There were many!
I was amazed, it seems you really can have fun, if you allow yourself to do so!

Saw Zootopia and Frozen. The theater was packed both times. Cartoons shown in theaters were originally meant for grownups anyway. So no need to feel awkward.

I'm a bit late to this. But I say it's your life. If you want to watch an animated film in a theatre, then do so. Heck, I watched The Neverending Story in a theatre ages ago when I was in my teens or 20's. The film was mostly for younger kids, but nobody ever said anything to me that I couldn't watch it.
