What kind of job would you like when you grow up.
« on: December 12, 2016, 01:20:15 pm »
Now I realize some of us are grown up, but even if
we are I am sure we still have dreams.

Though I am retired I would have loved to have been an an
astronomer. My grasp of mathmatics has always been poor
so I decided astronomy likely would have been difficult as
math is important for that career. It didn't keep me from
buildilng a 12 inch folded optics telesope though.

So what are your career plans for the future?

Canine artist. I'd like to make a living drawing, sculpting and painting dogs, wolves and other canines. This would include creating puppets, plushies, vinyl figures and other such things in addition to paintings, comics, sculptures and cartoons. I've wanted to do this since I was a kid.

When I was 7 years old and after I had seen the Star Wars movie, all I ever dreamed about was growing up and getting a job in the movie special effects industry. I especially wanted to build the cool models of spaceships and other craft used in the films. But as I grew up, I realized that it wouldn't be possible because of my eyesight condition. The models used in the movies had to be "museum level" quality which I wasn't capable of doing.  :(

independent game developer. would love to create quality video games but sell them for a cheap price compared to others of similar quality. i would also like to work alone on the games, or with anyone who would be willing to work with me (which is very few) i would gladly take other people's suggestions if they seem like they would fit in my game but most of the time people's ideas dont really match with mine.

though sadly its looking like i might get a far worse job due to my depression, and my current situation. if things go really well maybe i will be able to become a game dev, but that is likely going to be years in the future.

When I grow up I will have a Polynesian culture restaraunt in washington state, and be a respected marine biologist.  Currently I am an electrician working on 3 side hustles of writing books, producing a tool vest, and developing a motivational app.

All of you who said you cant, for some reason or other, the only reason you cant is you have stopped trying.  you can always develop those skills necessary to get into the field, find work arounds with your weaknesses, and find alternative ways to get the job you want.

Astronomer, get a job as a desk clerk or something at an astronomy lab just taking calls and on your free time learn as much as you can about the universe.

Mr starwars models, there is this invention called the magnifying glass, and if there is not one that suits you develop one and try your craft.

Mr videogames, try, bungle started out a couple of friends in a garage, you have a much more powerful computer when they started in the 90's

Mr dog plushie, start sewing or learning to sew.

For some of us here, that's a little easier said than done.  >:(  In my case, I'm legally blind in my left eye since birth, and am 20/200+ in my right eye. Think I'll be able to get a job doing movie special effects with that kind of eyesight? Not a chance.  :P And any magnifying glass I need would have to be 10x power or better. No hobby or retail store near me sells anything that powerful.

It's true in many cases all that keeps us from obtaining a wished goal
is finding it hard to get out of our comfort zone.  But some do have to
accept their limitations. Being a clerk to an astronomer would not
have given much joy to me. I find many professionals treat those
who are not with little respect. Some of them don't treat each
other any better.

My vision made it difficult to do well in school. If I had iived in a
larger city. Perhaps the school would have worked to help me over
come the problem. The school I was in didn't have the time with an
average of 30+ kids to a class. Few of the teachers cared enough or
had the time do more than give me a poor grade. In those days
it's likely they felt those who didn't do well were mentally deficient
or lazy.

I feel schools, especially those for kids should make sure
they understand any physical or mental difficulties their students
may have. Kids with problems often won't talk about it since
other kids tend to make fun of those who do.

I would say to those starting out, and still in school. Stand up for
your self and ask for assistance when needed. Many other people
don't or won't take the time to notice your problems if you don't.
Don't give up, the old saying "The squeaky wheel gets the grease."
is true.

I think that writing would be a hard but wonderful thing to do, even if it's just books like the Amber brown series, or chicken soup, I usually read the on death and dying parts of the chicken soup books, but still.

I think you'd have to be willing to face the option of being broke as ever in the very beginning.
