Science is the search of knowledge. We should not forget the scentist though.
The men and women who dedicate their lives in pursuit of knowlege. Most of
them believe they are helping mankind. Almost like a religion in the pursuit
that drives them night and day.
Tragically some good scientists are discredited either by a mistake, or by
some corporation who wants to hide the truth that could cost them millions.
With all the advances in technology today billions can be made or lost. At
the center is the men/women in the laboratory spending thousands of
hours testing and retesting ideas. They are dependant on the very people
who can destroy their reputation. Be it a multinational corporation or a
politician that was paid to discredit their work.
I was reading a book about the modification of food. Much research has been
done on genetic modification on corn, wheat, syobeans, tomatioes and others.
Millions of acres around the world has been planted with drought, insect, and
herbicide resistant plants. So much so that there are few if any unaffected
varieties left in the world. Wind, birds, and insects spread the pollen and
seeds of the genetically changed plants everywhere.
Little research has been done to see how these modifications affect the
natural world.. The honey bee is disappearing, Kids with allergies that
in the past were rare, and autisim is becomming more common.
Good science takes a lot of time to prove the safety of new products, but
big business only thinks about the bottom line. They claim they want to
eradicate hunger, but it's a lie. Farmers have to buy their seeds and pay a
royalty to sell the produce. If they try to use seed collected from the plants
that are grown, the corportaion sues them for patent theft as the corportation
owns the plant variety, even the pollen and seed it produces . Either here or
in a distant land, it makes no difference. So how can a poor farmer in a
third world country pay and still make a profit, many can't and have to give
up.
Hundreds of new chemicals are introduced into the environment each
year. Who can say how they will affect us in the future. In the not too
distant future I fear we will be reaping the dangers we are sowing.
People then won't have any choice but to live iwth it if they can.
