Title: How many furs in the h4x0r subculture?
Post by: Running_Wolf on July 16, 2004, 01:13:55 pm
I used to make (or try to make) mods a while back, but now I'm a casual gamer. I've tried my hand at C++ coding for Half-Life mods, but gave up after a month. I seem to be a better designer than a creator, unless it's webpages. I'm not a pro, but I'm no newbie either. Despite the fact I don't play games anymore, I'm still excited about upcoming games like Need For Speed Underground 2 and Half-Life 2. Heck, I go into an adrenaline-induced frenzy when I play UT2004.

The links were no good for me...  Could you post the full link instead of actually linking it?

I'm more of a 3D artist/modeler and game developer/programmer. And some people in my school can't even use a calculator...

I also enjoy 3D modelling, although I find it sometimes very time consuming, and frustrating. What kind of things do you model?

As for the rest of the stuff on this thread... erm... I dont even know o.o;

EDIT: By the way, I remember when it was still 31337 rather than l33t.

Couldn't imagine a time when it would be called 'Thirty-one Thousand Three-hundred Thirty-Seven,' but 'L-thirty-three T' sounds closer to home to me.  ;)

I'd think that hacking is overly glamorized. Kinda like gang-bangin'.

Well? How many of you out there is a "computer veteran"?
I just want to know how many furries are actually into this.

From what I've been able to observe, it's quite a lot. In my area, Debian is the Furry distro of choice.

Not too surprising considering that Furry-dom is a spin-off of the original UNIX hacker subculture that developed during the late-1960s -- early '70s, as did the various sci-fi fandoms. The UNIX hackers were the first Trekkies, Tolkeinites, and Furries.

Well, I'm not so much of a "1337 h4x0r", but I would consider myself a computer veteran. I'm on the thing about 6 hours a day... I am a bit of a gamer, though. I'm usually playing Unreal 2004/2003, Quake III Arena, Stepmania, Starcraft, Worms Armegeddon, and sometimes a little Counter-Strike. :D Graphics design, and more specifically pixel art (as in my sig) is also one of my fortes.

Back in the late 80's, I had a Commodore 64 and was into all kinds of mischief.  Mostly involving "warez", "phreaking", "war-dialing", and other fun.

While I was an oldschool phreeker, I was never much into the Hacking culture of the early 90s. I guess that's why I know computer repair but not computer programming.

EDIT: By the way, I remember when it was still 31337 rather than l33t.

*sighs in content* Those were the days... :)
I'm not much of a programmer myself either, except for Web programming. But I'm more interested in (greyhat) cracking. I only like to do it for fun, not for destruction.

Heh, thats more of a hobby for me... Im still in school  :dead: I don't think i could make this into a job because it will lose it's "fun"... Besides, i live in Bulgaria, and game development means almost nothing as a job here :?:

but I know hat you guys are talking about, the way this comp is acting up, I shoulda took some classes in THAT.
I've had a comp since 88...one of those primitive tandy's.  also had video games since I was 6 or so...which means  I've been gaming for over 20 years!

Heh, I'm not much of a gamer but I remember I once attempted to hack two ROM games (Pokémon Blue and The Legend of Zelda: Links Awaikening for Gameboy) so I could cross them togeather and create a new game. :) I was successful but then my computer crashed and lost everything...

Well, I'm an official code monkey (bachelors in CS) but I tend to refrain from doing anything destructive.  My brother-in-law is an elite tier of RedHat employee (only about a dozen like him in the world) and has all sorts of access to classified documents about this sort of things.  I've heard enough stories to deter me from trying anything.  Even if I had the time...  So I do lots of web programming in the meantime.  :)

Meh... I usually run Linux, but I'm still learning how to do things under Root without destroying everything. ._.  I know more about computers/windows than my friends though, as I seem to be the one that does tech support for the gang.

I've used a computer for a really long time... Im not into the h4x0r stuff. To me, hacking is something considered as "really c00l, t3h 1337 r0x0rz, etc.", that actually is just bad grammar. I never tried hacking because there is just no reason. I know where to get pirated software, brute-forcing, hacking passwords, etc... is almost useless unless you have some 1000meg wordlist or an ultracomputer. I'm more of a 3D artist/modeler and game developer/programmer. And some people in my school can't even use a calculator...

Hmmm, hackers do have thier uses and it is indeed good to know them ( had an Ausie friend on D2 that wrote a nice map hack that still worked in the 1.10 patch ). I don't know how to change all my settings let alone  crack anything. I have been gaming for some time though, only one game but it has been a while. I was even there when the original "pwn" typo was made and adopted into 1337. The guy who said it was all, "awww crap, thats gonna be picked up as 1337" only took a week to spread through out the server.

I was worried about that also, but I still enjoy web development.  :)  I figure if you like something before you're getting paid to do it, you'll like it even more when you are getting paid...  ;)

Bulgaria!  Wow, that's far from here, for sure.  There's a big video game industry in California you could take part in, given you moved there...  ;)

As am I. Bachelors in CS. Putting that knowledge to good use now  mostly as web administrator.

Since I'm a Mac guy in terms of home use, I've dabbled alot in the Cocoa environment ever since I purchased my first OS X 10.1 some years ago. It's something I've had to self teach, but arguably it's one of the most unique and elegant languages I've come to understand, though not fully. I probably couldn't do Cocoa programming for a living, but it's a nice hobby language for me.
Of course, I'm versed VB, C, C++, (and a hint of Java) among others and call upon their assistance from time to time. :?:

And no, I'm not the destructive type either.  :)

I used to be 'l33t'. I mainly used to do Remote administration terminals (RATS) and moved up to net bios... but had a close run in with the law :jail: ... so thats all behind me now! :)

I'd like to know more than I do... I started taking Computer Programming a year or so ago, but when I swapped schools my new place didn't offer it anymore (in fact, I knew a great deal more about computers than the tech instructor - the school "hired" me to write a tutorial for them). I am assured however that the ability to make buttons in Visual Basic is a highly impressive :D

As far as hardware, I can build/upgrade/maintain computers mainly because it doesn't take too long to figure out that the 8 tab connector fits into the 8 slot receptor.

Despite all that mess though, I'd consider myself a "computer veteran", even if my skills are mostly secretarial. I've been using computers since I was 3 (I remember being amazed at how realistic  Might and Magic I looked) and while I tend to stick to Windows, this is mostly on the advice of more experienced friends and relatives (stability, compatability, etc.)

I'm interested in knowing more about computers, mainly so I know what to do when my computer breaks down in some new and exciting way. Fun stuff, if perhaps over my head at the moment.
