Your First Exposure to Anime
« on: February 28, 2013, 04:45:05 pm »
What was the first anime that you watched, whether it was a movie or a series (even if it was dubbed in English and even if you didn't know it was "anime")?

My first exposure to anime probably had to be back in 1987 during high school. A friend had showed me a Japanese book called Macross Perfect Memory. The book was all in Japanese, but it detailed the creation of a show called Macross. From that point forward, I've been hooked ever since. I am a die hard Macross/Robotech techie.  :D

Voltron in the mid 80's

Yep, I watched that too. Kinda cheesy, but still fairly ok. There were actually 2 different Voltron series from the 80's. One with 5 robotic lions, and another with a 15 vehicles that were part of a space force, that when combined, turned into a giant robot.

Watched both I guess, as I remember both the lions, and all the vehicles coming together to make the big guy...  The toy set didn't make the distinction, it came with five transformer style lions/cars that could all be joined together to make the big robot... I still have the blue and red ones around somewhere.

Sufficiently long ago that my memory of it isn't clear enough to determine when or precisely what it was.
-I still can't think of anything.

My ABSOLUTE first?

Kiki's Delivery Service. (: Everytime after I watched it, I would run around my grandma's living room with my arms spread out, wishing I could fly with Kiki. :-[

OMG! Kikis delivery service was my first too! I dressed like kiki (purple shapeless dress, broomstick, and a stuffed black cat, complete with purse) and ran around my house "delivering" stuff from one end of the house to the other.

Macross. Classic Japanese version, undubbed. I LOVED IT.

First English-Dubbed anime I ever watched? DBZ.

However, I've never understod too many things about Macross, but I do know that the Soldiers in at least one of the movies were rather brutal. I can't remember which it was, but it was on like some sort of colony ship thing out in space, that was pretty much a city covered in a giant bubble of glass or something for quick planetary colonization. And that Destroid Pilots seem to have a under 50% hit rate unless they are piloting a Monster.
Artist by trade, Soldier by choice.

475 consecutive last stands. Funny how that happens, huh?

A 'Solus Cat' is my evolution on my older species, the Hreldren. But better.

Was it a series called Macross 7?

Oh this is a hard one. It was when Toonami was on from 2pm to 5pm weekdays with Tom. The original Tom, too. It was probably Sailor Moon, Reboot, Thundercats, Beastwars or Ronin Warriors. Then I saw Dragonball Z and became obsessed XD

Well, I watched Pokemon, Yugioh, Dragon Ball Z, Hamtaro, and some Yu Yu Hakusho back in the day, but I didn't really become an anime fan until first watching the show Bleach. Which admittedly I got bored of rather quickly. It started with me playing a game called Super Smash Flash 2. I noticed a character named Ichigo from something called Bleach in it. I saw that Bleach was on tv one saturday and took a glance at it. I then asked my friends to research anime. Meanwhile, I started checking out other anime on Adult Swim. After Bleach, I checked out Kekkaishi, but thought it looked too Japanese. Later on, my friends showed me Fullmetal Alchemist. Soon, Durarara!! started airing on Adult Swim, and I think that show got me hooked on anime. I also went back and gave Kekkaishi a chance and liked it.
Yo.

I watched a lot of the anime that used to play on cartoon network before I knew what anime was. Pokemon of course, dragonball Z, digimon, hamtaro, gundam wing, and maybe another that I'm forgetting. My first movie would have been princess mononoke when I was about ten years old. My older brother wanted me to to watch it to convince me I was human. My response? "It's a really cool movie and I can understand the girl's perspective. Except, you know, she was actually human. And I'm not." :p

Whatever was on Toonami when I got home, but my first REAL exposure was when I was about 8 or 9 years old and my brother handed me the first volume of Aqua Knight.

Definitely Toonami. My oldest anime memory is watching Robotech and revelling at all the character deaths - yes, revelling. I thought it was great to finally see a show not end happily all the time. Then there was Gundam Wing, Mobile Suit Gundam, Pokemon, Dragonball Z, Voltron, Ronin Warriors, and so many other shows...then Naruto happened and it took until late 2010 before I got back into anime with lots of old anime, like Macross and Mobile Suit Gundam.
