Title: Foods you can't eat.
Post by: Kobuk on January 19, 2014, 09:28:09 pm
We all have favorite foods we like: Chocolate, cookies, pizza, chicken, etc., etc.   But when it comes to foods we don't like, what are some that you can't eat for various reasons (Heartburn, upset stomach, allergic, bad taste, other health issues, etc.)

Coconut.  No, just no, i won't touch em.  I'm reluctant to poke around in boxes of chocolate because of the risk of getting one of those damned coconut truffles! >:(

Oh yeah, and BBQ sauce.  It's just plain disgusting, and i can't stand the smell of it.

Raisins, occasionally. If they're in oatmeal or good cookies where they have a chance to plump up some they're fine, but otherwise they stick to my teeth most annoyingly :/.

I'm also not a big fan of pork chops. Ham and bacon I'll eat occasionally, I love good pulled pork, but I just do not like pork chops no matter how they're prepared. Something about the texture just gets to me.

tomato sauce, it's awful with my acid reflux (although fresh tomatoes and ketchup don't seem to hurt me) And I also can't eat a lot chocolate for the same reason which is kinda funny seeing I wanna be a pastry chef.

Onions, especially raw...those give me really nasty acid reflux. Sometimes bell peppers irritate my stomach too, unless they are roasted. Oh, and Cheerios. They taste like cardboard O rings, and when drowned in milk, like wet corrugated cardboard.  x_x

I feel sick if I try to eat any of these foods (Bad taste and texture):
Bread Crusts, Cereal, porridge (Especially with raisins), poorly made soup (Dem people who can't cook >.>), and Lamb that tastes way too much like lamb.

also.. just wondering. Why would you eat raw onion?

Sometimes raw onion is put into or on top of foods as an additive or topping. e.g., salsa, hot dogs, salads

Due to my lack of gallbladder I have to be very careful about grease, religiously draining meat and stuff and there's very few fast food places I can actually eat. So I guess I can't eat greasy foods anymore.

Stuffed Bell Peppers are just a no for me.

Other than that, I am pretty open.

Eww... white chocolate, sorry but as someone who likes a stronger 60%-72% dark chocolate... white is just discussing. Universally doesn't mater if it's a top notch brand specially imported from Switzerland or no-name store brand. Not so found of cheesecake either, just not my cup of tea.

Creaminess when it comes to chocolate generally depends more so on how it's made as oppose to the cocoa content. Chocolate for the American market is generally a lot harder then in the EU market, as I've had special imported dark chocolate from Switzerland (which was a pain trying to get might I add) and even though it was 72% and even though it was neither sweet nor bitter, it was still very creamy. Same with various other imported chocolates I've gotten from Germany, etc.

Mmm... I refuse to eat anything that comes from tomatoes or peanuts (tomato paste/sauce, ketchup, peanut butter, etc.).  People have always made fun of me for carefully scraping the tomato sauce off my pizza before I eat. (:

My parents would probably shun me if I ever ate a hot pocket :D.  I never have, though I can't say the look particularly appetizing (even in advertisements).

The only time I can eat Spaghetti is if the noodles are angel hair pasta or vermacelli. Big thick noodles turn my stomach. Something about the feel of it in my mouth. I'm allergic to almonds though I can eat a little without having a reaction. A Hershey bar with almonds won't usually effect me. I don't like Chili or soup. Like spaghetti I can only eat hot dogs when they're the smaller thinner variety. Can't eat the big thick ones and frankly I don't even like the thin ones much unless they're grilled outside to the point that part of the skin is black. I can't stand the look of grits or mayonnaise let alone the thought of putting them in my mouth. I'm a pretty picky eater.

I think my family told me at a young age that if you eat bread crusts you get curly hair. I'm pretty sure this is a major reason why they taste so disgusting to me. When I was making an honest attempt to eat them my mum said that and it put me completely off. Since then they just taste so disgusting I can't eat it. (pretty sure they tasted bad in the first place though)

IMO, liver should not be classified as edible. I was given a small piece from a relative to try at a fancy restaurant. I couldn't force it down. The flavor and texture were both appalling. They say that it's an acquired taste or something. I think what they really mean is that you can only stand to eat if after your sense of taste has deteriorated to the point where you can't actually distinguish any flavors at all.

Beyond that, I can't stand eating the chunks of fat on most meats. Bacon gets a pass on that, though. I've gone with friends to a barbecue place with really good brisket. My friends gave me a hard time because I 'only ate half the meat' on the plate. But what I left behind on the plate was all just fat.

I also will not eat meat off a bone. It creeps me out. T-bone steak? Cut the bone out and set it aside so I don't think about it while I'm eating it. I won't eat ribs or chicken wings or legs, either.

I don't eat Demon Ghostfish.  I could hardly look at the damn things without... being creeped out to death...

(Fishing trip.  My friend did NOT understand how you cook fish, and they turned out as lukewarm sticky wet fish with milky white eyes and singed lips.  I have a picture somewhere, though i think you'd want me to keep it to myself.)

BBQ sauce is taboo, i don't allow it anywhere near me.  The worst time i had it was a pizza that had BBQ instead of marinara sauce.  I haven't eaten as California Pizza Kitchen since (i never liked their food to begin with, so it's not like i'm missing out.)

And as i said before COCONUT- OH GOD I HATE COCONUT!  I just can't seem to enjoy a box of truffles without that creeping fear that i'm about to bite into something i literally can't chew without gagging over the texture.

Not huge on spicy things, though i guess that's more of an "avoid if possible", not a "i won't eat this unless it means big money".

I actually have trouble eating mashed potatoes, i'm not sure why...  Though i can't help but notice that i love mushrooms, which most people i've met find disgusting.

Other than that... well, there are a lot of foods i haven't tried yet, so that's a big part of it.  A few of the things i've been looking to try are crow, opossum and "generic lizard meat"; locally accessible meat. Looks like we've got huntin to do.

^ same for me. hate eating from bones, and i cant stand fat.
*In a loud booming voice* But eating off the bones is the MANLY WAY to do it! ;)

Literally anything with gluten in it. Celiac disease is no fun, let me tell you. Nothing with wheat, barley, or rye, and I even have to be careful about quinoa (some cultivars have a protein in them that mimics gluten and causes the same reaction). I've had to stop eating a lot of my favorite foods, and I've become a label hawk. Says something about going organic, though!

I desperately miss my grandmother's fried chicken, though. I can make fried chicken myself with gluten free bread crumbs, but it's just not the same.  :(

Allergic to pork. I can't even eat BBQ off a grill that has had pork on it. Can't eat take out pizza because there's a possibility of getting a small amount of pork grease. I have to be real careful when I go out to eat.

As far as foods I don't like. Fish. I've tried the breaded stuff. Not bad. However.... the grease. Went to clean up after cooking some breaded fish. Pan was full of thick grease. Nothing I did got rid of this grease. Not even boiling water. I went out in my garage. Got some engine de greaser. And finally was able to remove this horrid slime from my pan. There's no way I'm putting that in my body every again.

My body says yes to almost every food, but my senses hold me back. I havent eaten a vegetable since I was 11. Besides a potato, but I don't think that's a vegetable.

^^We dissected a shark in biology last year! my partner stabbed me with a scalpel. :-[

Anyway, I really don't like mustard, especially that spicy mustard you can get at Asian restaurants. It makes my nose itch and burn sometimes.

Liver. Hated it since I was a kid.

Prunes and prune juice. My mom tried to convince my brother and I that prune juice was just like Coke. Even when I was 6 or 7 I wasn't buying that story.

Lima beans and okra. Slimy.

Tapioca. Not only does it taste bad, but the texture is just vile. No other word to describe it.

Oatmeal or any hot cereal. There was a discussion thread on this. One of my earliest memories (I was 4) was while visiting family in Toronto my old Scottish grandmother could not get me to eat my porridge.

Coconut. Can't stand the texture.

There are other foods I dislike, but the items above are on my "must-never-appear-on-my-plate" list. And since I do all the household grocery shopping and cooking I have final say on what goes on the grocery list. If I don't like it, I don't buy it, and I won't force the kids to eat it, either.

Not marmite. That is Australias scar on planet earth, but I quite like oxo or bovril. It's pretty much the same black paste but made with beef blood as apposed to vegetable extract. Yum.
Pretty much the only things I don't eat are all parts of haggis.
No guts and eyes for me thanks.
No lungs or brain. Ewe.

I've got... too many food issues, haha. I'm a finicky eater, I guess, but only some of it is me being 'picky'.

My allergies, some of which are super weird, and most of which I actually really loved before I became allergic:
Banana, honey (I don't know ANYONE else allergic to honey), curry (don't know what in the curry it is, since it's a spice blend), peanuts (formerly my fave, really recent allergen), shellfish, anything fermented tends to make me really sick, even if it's not technically an 'allergy'...

Textural issues:
Polenta/grits, couscous... Tomato I like the taste of but hate to bite into, so I enjoy salsas and sauces and such but avoid the chunks. Some things have to be prepared a certain way-- or can't be prepared a certain way-- for texture to not set me off.

Ethical reasons:
Veal, lamb... I just don't want to eat anything that's a baby! I also won't eat rabbit (used to have a house rabbit, and just generally love them), or octopus (they are so intelligent, I can't eat something so obviously sentient!)...

Just the grossest:
Mushrooms, most squashes, zucchini, rhubarb, canned green beans... It's a combo of texture issues and flavors here.

Cream sauces are just usually too rich for me, and I don't enjoy them enough to put myself through the discomfort.

Spicy foods, acidity, and fried foods all set off my acid reflux, but that doesn't mean I won't eat them-- I just have to make choices. If I'm going to eat something fried today, I need to avoid a bunch of spice and acid in the rest of my meals, and eat blander foods the next day, if I want orange juice then I can't have a lot of oil or spice that day...

Have you tried seeing a doctor about this? I'm kinda the same way now. My doctor prescribed me Prilosec to take. I can still eat fried, spicy, etc. foods, but not in the quantities I used to have. I have to eat smaller portions now.

Yeah, I've got pills for it now. It's all about limiting the amount per... well, every couple of days I can sort of cheat on my low-acid/spice/oil diet, if I cheat in a small way. But there's no being good all week for one massive cheat day. I had one year back around my senior year of high school where I couldn't 'cheat' at all, around when I first got a diagnosis and meds. It was pretty bland, but after that, I just changed a lot of how I ate and really backed off on fast foods... it felt terrible to me at the time, but I was like, the one college freshman to lose fifteen pounds instead of gaining it.

Raw tomatoes... ketchup is fine, v8 is fine, tomato soup and juice and sauce is all fine. it's just the slimy texture and taste of a raw tomato that makes me wanna hurl.

Ugh, ikr? I second this.

Caffeine keeps me up all night. That said, I tend to avoid it unless it's a special occasion.

As far as foods I don't like go, pickles, olives, anything that's been sitting in a brine.

Raw apples occasionally make my stomach hurt (at least if I eat more than one at a time) but that doesn't stop me. Apples are delicious.

I avoid ketchup. Anything else is fair game.

Rhubarb. The taste almost made me throw up. There are probably others, but this is the first thing that comes to mind.
