Title: Iara's Artwork
Post by: Iara Warriorfeather on November 20, 2012, 04:07:30 pm
Some of my anthro and animal drawings, a la deviantART (my name there is ChocolateStarfire):

I have some questions for you all...

(1) Do you like my art? What can I improve on?
(2) Should I charge for commissions? Would you be interested in a piece if I did?
(3) What animal would you like to see me draw (more of a challenge I suppose!)?

Enjoy! Thanks for looking!  (:

Those are all so pretty xD! i do like these. I'm already 'watching' you on DA so, yeah n.n I dunno above improvment :o!
Maybe you can draw a few Cheetahs for Dec. 4th ^^? You already draw nice cats. It wont be a challenge too much though lol...because yeah o-o

Your doing a nice job as is. So my suggestion is to keep drawing, and draw to
please your eye. You will gain a following of those who like your style.

I would say others will let you know when you ready for commissions. When
your art is liked well enough people will ask you.   I rarely ever commission anyone
to do a drawing for me, so I am not a good judge on that.

A character.. Heh.. Rabbits rabbits rabbits. :orbunny:

Just keep drawing a variety of characters. That's the best way
to gain experience.  Keep up the good work.

Thanks Saiyu and Old Rabbit!  :D

Saiyu-I will totally draw a cheetah for the Dec. 4th contest/awareness day.  :D

Old Rabbit-Thanks for the suggestions! I haven't drawn a rodent in ages, so a rabbit would be a great start (and they are so cute!). Good point about the commissions, too. I am a little antsy when it comes to waiting I guess.  :P  (:

Nicely done on all of them, to improve just calls for more practice and experimentation. For other animals maybe you can write down a bunch on pieces of paper, mix them up, and choose randomly (:.

Also what materials did you use for the wolf? My first guess would be pastels but I'm not sure.

I used Prismacolor Premier colored pencils for the wolf portrait. The consistency is incredibly similar to pastel when I use a lot of one color.  (: (And it's messy too!)

No problem. I understand birds in general are descendants of dinosaurs. Feathers
and all. I wonder if the big ancestors of chickens crowed at sunrise. If they did it
was praobably rather noisy at sunrise.  :D

(Do you scan images on a flat-bed, or do you photograph?  Or are they digitally created? Sorry if I am asking dumb questions.)

Glad you like them, Jade!

I take photos of the artwork with my phone, then upload them into Photoshop on my computer, do some editing to help with the lighting and what-not, then done!

I used to do more digital art during my MSc. I have a tablet, I just...prefer the catharsis of an actual pen/pencil to paper.

Understood!  While I do not draw much,  when i do it is on paper with colored pencil and mechanical pencil.  I often draw on 12x9" paper and it doesn't fit my scanner.  So then I wind up photographing them with a DSLR and macro lens while trying to battle lighting and distortion.   I try to use sunlight when drawing and photographing.  (I used to be really into photography. ) The pencil in my hand and the marks on the page are relaxing at times.

Thanks for the info!

Blue and black markings on your panther Riley are great!  Moongaze is looking winsome, of course.  And I love the warm tones throughout the second image.  Your dinosaur is cute, yet dangerous, and im not sure which way to run  ;).  Great work Iara!
Maybe if I get my skills up, I will look into these Copic markers.   Hmm...

(Hey Iara, have you ever thought of doing dinosaur illustrations to teach kids or adults different species?  Since no flesh survives the petrification process, artists are the only ones who can show us what they looked like.  Where I live there are a few good dinosaur track formations, and each exhibit is accompied with an educational display.)

Thank you, Jade! Copics definitely seem to be my medium, as it were, I really loved markers as a kid and watercolors, too...these are a blend of both, which is really nice! If you can afford them, look into them!

Making illustrations for kids/displays/books is something I have considered. I worry that the industry itself isn't the best...tons of kids/dino books are out there...I hesitate, only because I am uncertain how my drawings will be received, and what kind of story I would make! Right now I am focusing on drawing for me (and my friends!) versus on a professional level...although I am taking commissions, right now I still view my work as that of catharsis versus lucrative. Maybe someone will prove me wrong! But until then I appreciate the compliment and I am glad you like my work. :3

Dino tracks are awesome! I have seen a few in person, they are amazing in the way they capture a window in time...

As long  as your having fun you must be doing something right.   Draw fur yourself.   No need to go gangbusters making dough.
I'm good with electronics and programming, it lost much of it's appeal being a job for 10 years.  I was much happier doing what I wanted as a hobby. Now that I am into furry,  my electronics hobby is leaning that way and getting fun again.
*wink, wink* more to come on that hopefully....

It's been a while, and I have more art! I participated in Jurassic June this year, and I've been busy making art and writing my novel when I'm not drowning in work!

So... you .. just kinda ripped the snickers bar from the InGen workers hand while on Isla Nubar?  And what happened to that worker?  Was he called Dennis Nedry by any chance??

I was referring to a scene in Crichton's The Lost World, when a Velociraptor kills a hunter and manages to devour their candy bar as well.

And I like Snickers.  :P
