Finished making a faux fur tail
« on: December 15, 2013, 05:28:33 am »
I have made a tutorial on how to make a faux fur wolf tial here: http://forums.furtopia.org/fursuits-and-plushies/how-to-make-a-faux-fur-tail/

Scroll down for Finished tail

Hey all :P I've never worn a tail before and I really want to make one :O I just can't decide which tutorial to follow.

When I first searched I found this tutorial:
http://www.instructables.com/id/faux-fur-tail/

Then I watched this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4msOPr4eF5Y

Then watched a very long video on how to sew faux fur:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwpOyw55oNY

and then dug around and found this:
http://wolfden.critter.net/fursuits/constrctn/tail.htm  <-- I tried this one and it was not what I wanted. So I am making my own design :P

Don't use this template. It's too complicated for something so simple. It overcomplicates the process. It was not the shape I wanted and starts of thicker at the top and narrows down to a point.

I think I'll probably use this template and follow that last link. Am I correct in thinking the fold line is where the belt goes through?
I don't mind trying a complicated method so long as it gets results :)

Or I might just follow this tutorial: http://www.matrices.net/makingtails.asp <-- Ill follow this for the didden belt loop

(Fox tail from the link above)

I probably want my tail to be straight with a curve at the end. What do you guys recommend out of all these tutorials? ^__^ I think i'll have to use elastic straps instead of the fold because the pants I have, has 2 belt loops at the back of the pants with a gap of 2.5cm between them.

Hehe. I plan on wearing it around the house occasionally and maybe even indoor rock climbing with friends ^.^ So we may have to take into account wearing a rock climbing harness with it as well :P

Reference image:

From this image I determine the tail becomes large at the end (not like the template that I used) and the tail has more of a round flat end where the template folds and makes a point end. I will either modify the template or completely make a new one. <-- Probably that option

Current prototype:

What do you guys think about the tail? I'll probably make it thinner at the top. However I can't do this as I would not be able to put the elastic on to attach the tail.. Obviously it will look allot better when it's made of Faux fur :P

I will be uploading a digital template soon for personal/non-commercial use :) Anyone know a good free program to make it in? I want the measurements to actually resemble the correct lengths to scale.

Progress report: Made the final tail in faux fur. I need to buy some nylon webbing to use as belt loops.

If you're looking for an easy curved pattern, I can suggest this one , which has a whole bunch of step-by-step instructions, or this one, which is super easy (just cut out and sew the darts).

In that patten you found, 4" is 4 inches. An easy way to remember the difference between " and ' is that inches has two syllables ("), and feet has one ('). I think that that top fold line is where your belt would go, but I'm not sure.

That matrices tutorial is for a fox :). Generally foxes are the ones with the big white tip on their tails. Matrices does really nice tutorials as well.

Ok thanks :D I'll probably use this one: http://wolfden.critter.net/fursuits/constrctn/tail.htm

If anyone else find useful tutorials on tails can they please link me :D Also any idea what to use as a scrap material? That link does advise making a prototype :P

I'd say to just purchase some cheap fabric. I get all mine from some outlet store, so I just get whatever is on sale to practice on.

My suggestion would be to pick one you want to try, get some really, really cheap material, and test it out first. Like, I wouldn't even start with fur. Just some plain fabric that you can use to practice with making use of the template (if available) or whatever other techniques the method you pick uses.

It'll let you practice the techniques, and decide if the shape you found is something you like, or if you would like to try something a little different. And it lets you do that with minimal investment (since trial and error with fake fur would be relatively expensive).  You can't really expect the first one to come out perfect, after all.

I'm currently using an old bedsheet and making prototypes. Atm I'm making a template that uses 2 pieces of fabric to get the natural shape of a wolf tail.

Ooh, free scrap fabric is even better!

Looks good! You may want to stuff it a bit more eventually to get it a bit rounder and fuller looking, but it looks great@

Ok guys. Here is the finished tail :) (Is my face hidden because I'm secretly a dentist??? :O)

Here is the belt loops I made

The material for the belt loops were 2 pieces of 20cm black polyester webbing. (Cost me about 20 cents AU of the nylon webbing and I estimate the Faux fur that I used would be around $15AU. I payed $30AU for 1 metre by 80cm. I got it at that price because it was 40% off because of boxing day sales.)

I'll upload the template for making the tail soon. I just need to find a program where I can do it :/

- Post has been removed.

Edit: I will make a tutorial based on my template so people can make their own tails :)
