Title: The Return of Furtopia + Hosting
Post by: WhiteShepherd on May 16, 2020, 05:24:57 pm
As many of you know I retired about 8 years ago for life and health reasons. I did keep the forums running and they were successful. Though the forums grew quiet over these last years of the closing. So it came to a decision. Should Furtopia itself retire and close for good or return and change with the times?  After some heartfelt discussion with other furs I have come to the decision it's time to reopen! For that goal some work this month has already been done. I have acquired a new hosting server with Samsung enterprise level SSD (FAST) drives configured for RAID backup. Pushing for a new planet friendly and technical edge the new Furtopia server will be %100 powered by it's very own solar panels and a large battery backup requiring NO power from the grid! Pictures of the setup will be posted for you all to enjoy when finished. I have been working very hard all this month programming the hosting back end. Furtopia hosting will be made FREE to ALL furry artists who want to express their art THEIR WAY with their very own web page. Furtopia free hosting will provide PHP along with MYSQL. Furtopia hosting will also include a built in automatic gallery that can be used by any Artist who cannot or does not wish to make their own web pages. We are also looking for web coding volunteers who would like to be a part of the Furtopia rebuild! I will keep you all informed!

If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments you would like to see in the new rebuild I would be glad to hear them. :)

Nice to see you drop in, WS. :) Long time, no see.

I do have some questions, concerns, and suggestions. I'll see what I can do to write something up in the next two days.

Long time no see in deed!

This is fantastic news! Welcome back, WS, you've been missed!

I'll likely have some questions, but will wait until I've had some sleep before I ask them so I can think them through and make sure I'm making sense.  :)

Coding has been ongoing. I hope to have hosting applications open by the end of the month or early next month with a open beta application process.

Good to hear/see some news!

I like the forum layout, but it couldn't hurt to have a few UI updates; this one is a bit... old fashioned, to say the least.

I am currently porting the old server code over to Linux and making some security mods. When finished I would like to start working on a visual site facelift.  We can take member input at that time on design as well. :)

Yeah, IPs are changing as servers/services are updated. Should be fixed now. Let me know of any issues.

Been working on the hardware all this week. Installed 700 watts of solar panels in the back yard. Upgraded the batteries and ran new power lines. The main server, router, and modem is now powered by %100 solar. :) I'm hoping we'll be accepting beta hosting applications in the coming week.

It is good to know that Furtopia has a future . Though my vision is failing, I will try to remain a member of
this fine forum. \

I do appreciate all the work you do WS and I am greatful for
your hosting of my webpages over the years.

As of late when I sign onto Furtopia  I get a bad cirtificate
message, so when you have time  please look into it.

Working with Weis on the cert. Should be back in a day or so. Had surgery which took me out for some weeks. Back to migration and suspect we'll be moving the forums soon as well.

Can you relink your avatar?

https/ssl is now fully working. So all those insecure forum errors should be fixed. Working on FTP later today.  Sinapu saw that. Avatars should now be fixed.

Seems like good news to me, WhiteShepherd!

Self-hosted furry web sites seems to be a dying breed these days. I think it'd be nice to see what furs can produce for their own home pages again. Either I've fallen out of the curve on what's current, or web site design has gone down the tubes these past several years.

Welcome back, furtopia.org hosting! :)

*with beard, gray hair, spectacles, and cane*

Yep, I remember all those back in my days. You young pups have it too good right now. *waves cane at young furs*

Now you got Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, We Chat, TikTok, and all these other new fangled social sites.

Probably 25-50 years from now, we'll switch to VR (virtual reality) like they have in that movie Ready Player One.

Then maybe 100-200 years from now, maybe genetic engineering will be advanced enough to give people ears, tails, and such. Then we won't need VR and social apps to "pretend" we're furry, because we ALREADY are.

Actually, I had a chat with my niece, and she was amazed at the idea of setting up her own website.  Sure, you can "customize" Tumbler, or Twitter, or whatever, but they couldn't hold a candle to the flexibility that actually building your own website on Angelfire afforded.  And Livejournal beat Twitter all to pieces on simple post length.

I used to have an LJ account long, long ago to keep up with fursuit related content, but then deleted it. I don't think anybody uses LJ anymore for furry business. Everybody has pretty much moved to Twitter, Facebook and other more "modern" social media sites.

Update... Well was hoping to have something sooner than this. But we hit a few road bumps we are working through. First Kada-Ru has been sick for months. Doctors are not sure what is wrong yet. But she has been ill and unable to get on the computer. I've been coding the services and she was migrating/updating the HTML. I'm trying to do both ATM. But we are looking for a HTML volunteer who would like to help out.

Email is now working. Check your spam folder as sometimes  mail programs label as spam. That was a saga that took about a month to finally sort. First we were using our ISP's mail server. But they kept blocking us for sending to many e-mails and wanted us to run our own server. So we set up our own mail server only to find out support did not know how to set a reverse DNS (needed for mail). Almost a month and they found the correct department and set reverse DNS. Only to find out the static IPs they gave us was on a Spamhaus PBL "they" created so we couldn't send any mail. 10 days later and they assign us a new netblock that is not on a blacklist. SO mail seems to be working well now (knock on wood). Forum e-mail notifications should be operational. Though let me know of any issues should you have any.  :P

If I knew HTML better I'd volunteer. My skills are fairly basic, (remember the sites from the early 2000's?) and likely need "updating" themselves to be of any use. I think the last HTML I did was in highschool...  :o

Say hello to Kada for us. I'll be keeping her in my prayers.

Thank you Varg!  Yeah, started having really bad dizziness June 28th this year.  Got so bad I felt like I was a drunk 24/7!  The doc changed my heart medication and now I've leveled out to around a 5 on a scale of 1-10 on the dizziness.  Haven't been able to do much of anything except sleep.  Getting used to the level of dizziness I have now so wanting to get back into doing things again.  We'll see how things go.

Furtopia hosting will be furry.  WS and I are also working on http://www.inlightof.us (http://www.inlightof.us) and http://www.artstyle.us (http://www.artstyle.us), both which are not furry.  WS can explain them better than I can.  If your niece isn't into furry artwork she can sign up for http://www.artstyle.us (http://www.artstyle.us).

The main reason I don't like twitter is because of the post link being so short!  I use it but not often.

Thankfully, NOT covid!  Just dizziness that the doctors are trying to figure out why I have it 24/7, except when sleeping.  Changing heart meds helped a little but still trying to figure things out.  I may have to live with the way it is now for ever, which is doable.  So, trying to get back into the swing of things and trying to be on the comp more.  Time will tell. :)

I know basic HTML coding.  I've never been the type for the 'fancy' business websites of today.  All the flash etc.  I figure knowing BASIC HTML coding is all that is pretty much needed.  I've learned from there.  I use dynamicdrive.com for most things.  I also use https://visuallightbox.com/ (https://visuallightbox.com/) for some of my galleries.  We have a friend that tried helping us with one of those template sites to make a website and when I looked at the coding I was just lost!  Sort of like reading legalese.  Lots of words that don't mean a lot that could be summed up in one or two NORMAL paragraphs.  So that is what I did.  I looked at the page he sent me and just redid it with the basic HTML coding.  Worked out great!  So, if you know the basics, that is all you really need to get started!  I know I make it seem easy.  My website (http://www.kcff.net (http://www.kcff.net)) is all basic HTML coding with help from those two links I posted above.  And it is easy to find answers to a problem on the internet.  I don't know CSS and other things like php.  And you can look at pretty much ANYONE'S website HTML coding by clicking on 'view page source'.  That is how I learned things too.  And by changing things here and there I could figure out what different codes did.

If I knew HTML better I'd volunteer. My skills are fairly basic, (remember the sites from the early 2000's?) and likely need "updating" themselves to be of any use. I think the last HTML I did was in highschool...  :o

There will be Furtopia for furries.  http://www.inlightof.us/ (http://www.inlightof.us/), WS can explain this one, and there is an explanation on the website, which is now active. And once WS gets furtopia hosting working we will also be working on a non-furry hosting service for all other artist called http://www.artstyle.us (http://www.artstyle.us).

I am very curious to know how website applications will work. What information will be needed? What can and can't a person do with a hosted site? Does it have to be furry related like they used to be so very long ago?

I remember doing that with Jonawolf's site and seeing what he did to make mine. XD

My brain in mushy from the Security+ crash course I'm taking all week, but after that's over with I'll be up for working with it again. From what I do remember, it's pretty easy. You just have to remember to end everything you start.

Ok pull up a seat next to the fire cubs. Got a little update and back story for you all. First Kada-Ru who has been sick for months seems to be getting a bit better. So I think she is going to start joining me on making updates again. Though you haven't seen it I have been making progress as it's been a lot of work. Part of the time factor is I had to redo a LOT of the coding from scratch. When Furtopia hosting shut down I backed it up onto two seagate external hard drives. When I decided to reopen I had planned to restore the backups and make some updates. Over the course of 10 years sitting in storage BOTH hard drives had failed!! Coding I had made over the course of 10 years was just gone forever.  :'( I was tempted to stop there. But having coded it once I knew I could do it again. Just it would take a LOT of work to get the various multi-user server services programmed again. Kada-Ru had a few of the old html files on a 2009 CD and that helped me create a template. So as I put a couple hours into this each day into repair/programming I get a funny sense of nostalgia. I feel like a furry version of the kids from Narnia stories. With love from all the furies in the community we built a Furtopia kingdom that was a sight to behold. After a decade of watching the kingdom thrive I retired and went back through the closet to rest and grow. When I came back I noticed much was not working or in disrepair. But in the shadows loyal Furs had kept the fires going of the old kingdom still going the best they could to help new fur commers. Well the "coding" fires are being lit and this steam engine though looking old now is going to race like never before. Don't let current looks fool you. A lot of work is happening under the hood. ;)

I am currently working on a new IRC web client for easy access to our IRC. Should be up in a day or so. I also have been working on the beta Furtopia indexer. The old Furtopia indexer used to gallery your pictures in any folder you did not have a webpage. So if an artist did not know how to make a web page they could use our nice looking Indexer gallery. The new gallery I am doing also galleries music and movies. This lets your Furtopia account stream your mp4's to your visitors and you can even like existing Youtube movies you own into your Furtopia indexer gallery.

Here is a little sneak peak of the new beta Furtopia Indexer. The links are broken as this is just a beta we are stress testing right now. More will be added to it.

I'm getting a 404 error on that link, WS.

It all sounds crazy cool, albeit a LOT of work. I'm really looking forward to it!

Will the artist's parade return to Furtopia's front page?

Artist parade will be working. 404 on the link?

Artist parade will be working. 404 on the link?

Link works now.

EDIT: Wow, now that was a nostalgia trip! I forgot Furtopia used to have a radio stream! That was awesome! Also looked at the "-of the week" section. It's sad that I can't find a lot of those furs anymore. Hopefully they just changed their name. Either way, I'm excited for it to be coming back!

The video will be a new feature, yes? Is there a lot more work involved prepping the site to handle the new formats and increase in traffic?  Also found your youtube channel thanks to your embedded video. I like your self reliance projects, they remind me of my Uncle Sid's projects in many ways- especially the supercaps and aquaponics. Good stuff.

Varg the indexer is already programmed for the new formats. If you look at the "testme" site you'll see the indexer is streaming .mp4 and Youtube links. As far as bandwidth we are in a good place. In the past before we shut down we were running 5MB upstream which handled everything we needed for all services fine. I am now paying for 50MB upstream and have the option to switch to Gig upstream (fiber) for extra costs if it becomes needed. Furtopia's old server was an Athalon X2 1.2Gzh (dual core) with 4gigs of RAM (a lot for the time) and a mechanical hard drive running Ubuntu Linux at 350-400 watts of power. Our new 100% solar powered server is a Raspberry Pi 4B with a ARM64 X4 1500Mzh (overclock-able to 2.1Gzh if desired) with 8gigs of RAM and x2 Enterprise Samsung SSD drives (they're FAST like RAM drives) running Debian 64bit Linux at 3.5 watts of power directly hooked to batteries.

The new server though vastly more power efficient is also WAY WAY faster. Plus because it's solar powered there have been a few big storms that have knocked out power here and service stayed running as the whole system is DC battery/solar powered. I spend 6 hours yesterday putting the finishing touches on the automated account services and running tests. Today I will be working on the email reply system and hosting application page. After that I'll remove unused links from indexer and bring up the beta website hosting application for furs who want an early jump on hosting. Afterwards I will be working on the code for the web directory listings and a million other things. TONs of work to do as I'm re-coding from scratch. But we are making progress day by day. It is coming along with hard work and this ship will eventually fly!

If you are an artist who would like to get a website early and send us notice of any issues, we have opened web hosting applications to beta. Things working are Webhosting, FTP, MYSQL, and Indexer (gallery for pages with no index.*).  Some links and services are still under development. But any webpage hosted should now work fine.

Beta hosting application: https://services.furtopia.org/f_application.shtml

Enjoy!

Doing some investigation I found out due to newer Java making some security changes that it broke the old web IRC client. So after programming/hammering away for two days I have finally got working a new Furtopia web based IRC client. It can be found here: https://client-irc.furtopia.org (irc.furtopia.org will redirect you there as well). I still have some work and polish to do to it. But it is working well if you have some friends who would like to fur IRC-chat. I have MUCH more work to do on so many other Furtopia features.  (: But we are making good progress! :)

No problem.  I'll be here or around. LOL

You're back! Yay!!

I remember doing that with Jonawolf's site and seeing what he did to make mine. XD

My brain in mushy from the Security+ crash course I'm taking all week, but after that's over with I'll be up for working with it again. From what I do remember, it's pretty easy. You just have to remember to end everything you start.

After getting some rest doing the IRC I added a power monitor station. It needs calibrated to show the battery correct. But it is showing power consumption. Modem+router, server, USB hub, and x3 dedicated hard drives are taking less than 200mA power (less than 6 watts). Pretty impressive!

Say hello to Kada for us. I'll be keeping her in my prayers.

Speaking of which--should I revamp/edit my old HTML 4.01 tutorial, and post it on Furtopia so that newbies to web creation can learn?

Varg: I expect very little change in power usage. The Pi 4B is based off quite powerful Broadcom ARM64 processors. These processors while comparable to Desktop CPUs in power were originally designed for cell phones. Because of this they were made with power efficiency in mind. That's what we're seeing here. It's so power efficient even if the solar panels were damaged the batteries could maintain the system +10 days. The Samsung Enterprise SSD drives are also incredibly power efficient while being fast like a RAM drive which is why everything is loading so quickly. This has been a fun and impressive home server build. :)

Mr. Initialman if you would like to put it up! I'm sure others would enjoy it. Your web site is ready too. :)

You could.  Though I think basic HTML coding never changes.  Just all the other things that are coded to create different sites change.

I started to read the Prologue and actually didn't understand what you were trying to do on this page.  But, that could just be me. LOL  I'm going back to bed for some more shut eye then I'll check out more later.  Remember when speaking to newbies you don't want to be using really big words.  There were a couple that threw me.  Recheck for spelling errors and double words such as:  on on etc.  I'll look over more later.  That looked like a HUGE undertaking writing all this out!

There are certain things I do want to tighten up--like condense three chapters dealing with how markup works, the first webpage, and attributes into one single chapter.  Most of the rest, though, I might leave as is.  And I think I'll say "I'm teaching HTML 4.01 because that's what I know" in the prologue.

Hi All,

This is the first time I have visited the Furtopia forum in quite a while. I think its awesome that you are bringing it back to its former glory WS.
These days most of my internet time is spent on facebook and youtube. Its hard to remember what internet was like before then...or what I did on it.

Hopefully I will clean up all of my links in firefox so I remember to come here more often!

I tried using the web-based chat room, but it showed this error message:

Anyways, I look forward to watching this forum grow!

Hi Kada,
I just noticed something while looking at your screenshot:
To the left of your URL bar, you have a little padlock icon. My padlock icon has a cross through it and says: Connection Not Secure.
I am wondering if this could be causing the issue?

I don't know if it would help, but if WhiteShep wanted to remote access my pc to try and find out what the problem is, we could organise a time.

I'll let WS know.  He should be coming up in a bit for movie night and I'll let him know about your message.  I have been telling him everything you tell me.

I went and relooked at the screenshot I posted for you and yes, I do see the crossed out lock.  My site isn't secure because it doesn't need to be since I don't take any personal info or monies from anyone.  It is just a personal website.

So, is the crossed out lock on the page when you try to access the chatroom?

Secure sites start with the https://  (s).

I'll give that info to WS as well.
