Windows Toolbar Wallpaper
« on: November 22, 2005, 07:29:14 pm »
Here's a tidbit of information:

I figured this was a good place to put this.....
I was trying to get a picture for the background on my IE6...I saw HotBar you can do it, but then you need to always have the HotBar open and they make popups come up...There is a program to do it, but as far as I know, it only works on IE5 (I have IE6)....I was desperately trying to get a picture on my toolbar and I finally figured out how.

In case you want a toolbar wallpaper and you don't know how to do it, here's how:

Click "Start"
Click "Run"
Type "regedit"
Expand "HKEY_CURRENT_USER"
Expand "Software"
In "Software" expand "Microsoft"
In "Microsoft" expand "Internet Explorer"
Now double-click "Toolbar"
Create a New "String Value" and name it "BackBitmap" for all Windows toolbars or "BackBitmapIE5" if you have IE5 and only want the pic to come up in that.
Right-click "BackBitmap" and click "Modify"
Type the full path of the picture you wish to display.

BAM!

You now have a picture on your toolbar! No extra adware, no extra programs to run....Just advantage taken of Windows Registry Editor...

NOTE:
The picture you use will have to be as many pixels wide as your screen display is....(mine is 1024) ... and around 135 - 150 pixels tall, depending.....

How cool is that!?

Very cool indeed!! '<img'>
*makes note of the instructions*

Do you think it will work for Firefox too??
I'm gonna try it and will post here if it does.
Thanks Kyoshi. '<img'>

I believe it would work wor Mozilla, but I'm not sure where in the registry to put the string... I guess you could figure that one out....

Serra, did you make sure the pic was the width of you screen resolution and that it was about the height of the toolbar? I was getting extremely frustrated trying when it wouldn't work....then I resized the pic and it was all good... Are you sure you were in the right spot (as I'm a dumbass and forgot to mention that the "software" folder is the one under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" ......

It took me a few tries until I got it right...

No, you're not a dumbass. Anyways, I figured where it was by my own.
I changed the size several times. 1024 x 768 My screen is that size, and I tried several values. Not sure if I'm creating the right thingy, though... Tried them all, but because they are in spanish, can't be sure of whic one is the right. (as stated, technology hates me)

Wait....did you create the image 1024 x 768? ... It should be 1024 x 145 ... and (as far as I know) it has to be a bitmap (.bmp)

I tried to do the image as 1024 x 768 and it wouldn't work, so then I just changed it to 1024 x 145 and it worked fine... I find the best place to save the image is in C:\ because then all you gotta do is modify the string value to C:\toolbar.bmp (assuming you saved the picture as "toolbar" like I did....

No! No! you got it wrong.. I said my screen was that size, and I changed the second value to fit. Lemme try changing it from JPEG to BMP.

So....did the change from .jpg to .bmp work out for ya? Or is Windows wanting to be stubborn? ...

You can also find TweakUI in the Windows Power Tools section on Microsoft's site and that has a section in it where you can set the toolbar background for Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer seperately.

For Firefox, you'll need to edit your userChrome.css file (which, oddly enough, is a CSS file '<img'> )

By default, you can find it by going to
C:\Documents and Settings\[your windows username]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[your Firefox profile]\chrome

But first you'll probably need to
open My Computer
open the Tools menu
select Folder Options
open the View tab
select Show hidden files and folders

Otherwise the Application Data folder won't show.

Anyway, there you'll find userChrome-example.css
Copy that and rename it to just userChrome.css, open it in Notepad (ie just double click on it) then add

Code Sample
   /* Use a background image for the toolbars:
       (Substitute your image file for background.gif) */

     menubar, toolbox, toolbar, .tabbrowser-tabs {
       background-image: url("background.gif") !important;
       background-color: none !important;
       }

But it treats each toolbar seperately, so you'll need to have a small tiled image or cut your image up and do something like

Code Sample

menubar {
       background-image: url("background1.gif") !important;
       background-color: none !important;
       }
toolbox {
       background-image: url("background2.gif") !important;
       background-color: none !important;
       }
toolbar {
       background-image: url("background3.gif") !important;
       background-color: none !important;
       }
.tabbrowser-tabs {
       background-image: url("background4.gif") !important;
       background-color: none !important;
       }

Just play around with it... I can't be bothered... I'm quite happy with the plain old default
Also, it doesn't have to be a .gif file... that's just what it was in the example at mozilla.org
Also, you may want to copy the images you are going to use into your chrome directory, just because it's easier '<img'>

Finally, I hope this hasn't been overly confusing and I haven't missed anything '<img'>
